Descriptive adjectives usually follow the noun that they modify.

A few short descriptive adjectives precede the noun that the modify:

Some adjectives have different meanings depending on their position. In the normal position after the noun, the meaning tends to be literal. Before the noun, the meaning changes.

Adjectives of quantity, possession, and demonstrative adjectives usually precede the noun.

When more than one adjective describes a noun, each adjective is placed in its normal position. Two adjectives in the same position are joined by “and.”

nice, intelligent girl

Bello e Buono

The adjectives bello e buono can either follow the noun they modify or precede it.

If bello o buono precede the noun then they are modified.

Bello imitates the definite article

Buono imitates the indefinite article for singular forms. Grande

When the adjective grande precedes the noun, it may become grand’ before a singular noun beginning with a vowel or gran before a singular noun beginning with a consonant (except z and s + consonant). In the plural, only the form grandi is used.

Dei grandi amici e delle grandi amiche: some great friends ( males/females)

Dei grandi pittori/ delle grandi pittrici: some great painters (male/female)

* When grande follows a noun, the regular forms grande and grandi are used.

Vorrei un appartamento grande. I would like a big apartment.

Questo and Quello as pronouns

A pronoun replaces a noun. When used as a pronoun questo and quello have the

following forms.

Questo: questo, questi, questa, queste Quello: quello, quelli, quella, quelleMi piacciono queste. I like these.Non mi piacciono quelli. I don’t like those.
