He is the One Jesus is the Word made Flesh. Jesus is the Bread of Life. Jesus is the Victim offered for our sins on the Cross. Jesus is the Sacrifice offered at the Holy Mass for the sins of the world and mine. Jesus is the Word—to be spoken. Jesus is the Truth—to be told. Jesus is the Way—to be walked. Jesus is the Light—to be lit. Jesus is the Life—to be lived. Jesus is the Love—to be loved. Jesus is the Joy—to be shared. Jesus is the Sacrifice—to be offered. Jesus is the Peace—to be given. Jesus is the Bread of Life—to be eaten. Jesus is the Hungry—to be fed. Jesus is the Thirsty—to be satiated. Jesus is the Naked—to be clothed. Jesus is the Homeless—to be taken in. Jesus is the Sick—to be healed. Jesus is the Lonely—to be loved.

    —Saint Teresa of Calcutta...

    The Work of Christmas

When the song of the angels is stilled,

When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and princes are home,

When the shepherds are back with their flock,

    The work of Christmas begins:

    To find the lost,

    To heal the broken,

    To feed the hungry,

    To release the prisoner,

    To rebuild the nations,

    To bring peace among others,

To make music in the heart.

And to radiate the Light of Christ,

    every day, in every way,

in all that you do and in all that you say.

Thoughts for the New Year Dear Jesus, I have done so little for You in the past year. I do not know what You have in store for me this year, yet I accept it with its joys, sacrifices, sorrow, pain, and even death—joyfully—for it is Your choice. You will help me to do my part and cooperate with Your grace, refrain from my habitual sins, overcome my faults and defects. O Jesus, You know that without You I am nothing. Be with me! Allow me to spend this coming year in Your love and service, without counting the cost.

Bless me and my family, those with whom I come into contact—especially those who dislike me. They have good reasons. Bring to Your feet those who seek You, groping for Your Light. Bless and help the dying, the poor, the sick I deal with. Give the gift of holiness to all the priests I know and also the religious. Bless all those who love me and help me. Give strength, health and wisdom to the pope and bishops. Let me always remember that all that I am, all that I have are Yours.

Come, Lord. Visit on us peace that we might rejoice before You (Psalm 106:4-5). Sweet Lord, give me the peace of Your Holy Spirit, the peace where nothing troubles me in my tiring day. Grant that when I am overburdened, the thought of Your peace may come—beautiful and calming. The little irritations of this world are like needle pricks. Give me the strength not to notice them. Give me the peace of my faith that no worldly assault may shake. Help me. Bless me. Let me radiate Your peace, Jesus of Nazareth, that in this impatient world, Your peace might be the peace of a turbulent sea quieted by Your word.

    —Catherine de Hueck Doherty...

  • “ I B Y …” The Feast of the Lord’s Baptism gives you an opportunity to reflect on the

purpose and meaning of your own baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the Sacrament of Baptism in

these words: “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in

the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as (children) of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission…” (#1213)

The Catechism then expands on this basic definition when it says: “The different effects of Baptism are signified by the perceptible elements of the sacramental rite. Immersion in water symbolizes not only death and purification, but also regeneration and renewal. Thus the two principal effects (of Baptism) are purification from sins and new birth in the Holy Spirit.” (#1262)

So, Baptism is the foundation of your life of Faith and your relationship with the Lord. It’s also the beginning of your pilgrim journey of faith from this life to the next. That’s why the Lord and His Church affirm that Baptism is necessary for salvation (CCC #1257) which is your place in the eternal life of heaven. As the Catechism teaches, Baptism is a powerful Sacrament that washes away original sin (the sin of Adam and Eve), and all the sins you commit before Baptism, as well as the effects of these sins. It gives you a new life and a new identity as a Child of God, because you partake of God’s Divine nature. It makes you a brother or sister and disciple of Jesus and a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells. Baptism also makes you a member of the Body of Christ, the Church and joins you in a sacramental bond of unity with all your baptized sisters and brothers in the one People of God. Finally, Baptism calls you to live and profess the gift of faith you receive by participating in the apostolic and missionary activity of the Church. That is, continuing Jesus’ saving mission in the world.

The Rite of Baptism, like the ritual for other Sacraments, uses visible signs and symbols to express the spiritual and invisible way that it brings God and His grace into your life through this amazing Sacrament.

Some of the signs and symbols used in Baptism are: THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: A Cross is traced on the forehead of the person being baptized to “claim them for Christ” and to express how the Mystery of the Cross is at the heart of the Faith they will receive through this Sacrament. WATER: Water is the primary symbol of Baptism. When Jesus died on the Cross, Blood and Water flowed from His pierced side, to be the wellspring of His Life and Grace. (John 4:10) The water of Baptism reminds the one being baptized that, in this Sacrament, they are cleansed of sin and die with Jesus to sin so they can begin a new way of living by sharing a new and resurrected life with the Lord. As St. Paul reminds you, if you’ve been united with Jesus through likeness to His death “…so shall (you) be through a like resurrection.” (Romans 6:5) WORDS: The words used in Baptism, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” speak of the new birth into the Divine Life of the Holy Trinity that God lovingly gives to the person who is baptized. OIL: The newly baptized is anointed with Sacred Chrism to signify that they share in the Priestly, Kingly, and Prophetic mission of Jesus, and are called to carry out this mission by living and loving as Jesus did. WHITE GARMENT: A white garment, put on after Baptism, is an outward sign of a newly baptized person’s new and truest identity as a daughter or son of God who has become a new creation clothed with Christ. CANDLE: A baptismal candle is given to the newly baptized. This candle is lit from the Easter (Paschal) Candle, which is placed near the Baptismal Font. That candle represents the Risen Lord, Who is the Light of the World. Jesus is also the Light Who guides the new believer all throughout his or her life of faith, so that the flame of their faith will always burn brightly.

These signs and symbols tell you that, in Baptism, you are incorporated into Christ and His Church and configured to Him. They also tell you that Baptism is a loving gift to you from God which is intended to bless you every day, as you journey with the Lord in faith from this life to the next.

dear Padre How does a person become a saint? Saint Alphonsus Liguori challenged those who entered the Redemptorist Order saying, “Don’t become a Redemptorist unless you want to be a saint.” I would widen his expression to say, “Don’t get baptized unless you want to be a saint.” To be a saint means that you want to go to heaven. Most people are not formally canonized, but anyone who leads a holy life is a member of the communion of saints. This is the mystical that body spans heaven, earth, and purgatory. As the Letter to the Hebrews said, “We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…” (Hebrews 12:1).

Technically speaking, to be canonized, a person’s life should serve as a model for others in the Church and two miracles must be attributed to his or her intercession. The formal process begins after death with the creation of the person’s “cause,” often by a close successor along with the local Bishop.

The beatitudes offer you a blueprint for holiness. If we are poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungry for righteousness, merciful, pure, peacemakers, or persecuted for doing what is right, you’re on the road to sainthood. Reflect on one of the beatitudes. It can be one you do well (peacemaking) or one that challenges you (purity of heart). Discern how you live it out and how you could live it out better. Slowly you will find yourself growing holier, and one day you will find yourself a saint in heaven.
