Good.

Ungradable, no significance.

Alterations to this structure should not require a heritage permit, provided they conform to the campus heritage guidelines.

The building itself has limited heritage significance. It contains an old, freestanding wooden clock dated 1932.

A concrete framed structure that serves as a junction between Administration Block B and C, and contains a staircase. The structure also allows access into either building. It consists of a solid masonry central section, with glazed panels between this element and the adjacent historic fabric of Administration B and C.

Poor. The building has been altered internally many times and this, together with the changes in level throught the structure, make the space confusing and illegible. Almost all of the internal fittings and finishes have been altered or removed.

Grade IIIB.

Opportunity to adapt the building to provide a clearer connection between Crozier Street and the Rooiplein. Awkward change of level to the Rooiplein should be resolved.

Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges, or replanting in an axial arrangement. Retention of the original external elements, such as the granite plinth. Alterations to this structure should conform to the campus heritage guidelines. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIB.

Stellenbosch University plans archive.

This building has symbolic significance as the old library of the university campus. It both contributes to the pattern of the university and “streetscape” of the campus and of Crozier Street, along which its entrance has been axially aligned. Therefore the building has landmark quality.

Double storey structure with triple storey side wing. Cement tiled roof with asbestos gutters, combination rusticated and dressed granite plinth. Steel casement windows with pivot fanlights, paired into double volume, vertical recesses. Timber panelled entrance lobby with decorative timber panels above Cape Rev. doors (possibly Midford Barberton). Terrazzo-framed entrance, Art Deco style light fittings. Wing extension built a half level up, with splayed concrete frame although much altered. Trees planted in avenue within forecourt.

Fair. There appear to be some issues related to leaking and damp in some of the study areas.

Building: ungradable (no significance). Collection: Grade II, Provincial Heritage Site.

Threats to the movable heritage objects within the building relate to their storage and the prevention of fading or decay of documents.

That the collection be nominated as a PHS.

The building is intrusive within the Rooiplein, which is the primary open space within the academic campus, and has no heritage significance. However, the library houses exceptionally valuable movable heritage objects, including extensive map and art collections of extremely high significance, inclinding Thom’s clock which is a national monument.

This building is constructed entirely underground. It is a concrete frame building with several lightwells, service spaces and access points that protrude into the Rooiplein that runs over it, as well as a large recessed entrance area to the south of the Rooiplein that forms the main access point. The building houses a former national monument (PHS), H. B. Thom’s clock, as well as numerous valuable books, artworks and other documents, particularly in the Africana Collection.

Good, with intact, original features.

Grade IIIB

Introduction of inappropriate materials and/or significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading. Universal access, security etc. to be properly incorporated.

General maintenance plan should be outlined to retain intrinsic qualities and materials. Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIB.

Stellenbosch University plans archive.

This building is a typical Collins-designed structure, is architecturally intact and follows the pattern of university buildings in its form, height, materiality and detailing. The building has associated significance with education. It houses a significant geological collection of moveable objects. The building forms one edge of the forecourt to Admin A.

Double storey building, smooth plastered and painted with a brick plinth and white steel windows. Pitched, tiled roof with ventilated eaves and replaced flashing. The entrance lobby has mosaic columns, timber doors and wood panelling. Staircases are terrazzo with a mosaic inlay and padded handrail on a metal balustrade. Terracotta tiling throughout. The plan is symmetrical with two courtyards. Original timber and glass display cases, cabinets and shelves house a collection of fossils, rocks and other geological objects.

Refurbishment of lecture theatres.

The building is in very good condition, aside from the roof tiles which have become brittle and require replacement. The internal courtyards have bird-proof netting. The Neelsie student centre has been placed too close to this structure and has services located here. This has severed the historic relationship between this elevation and the rest of the campus.

Grade IIIA.

Introduction of inappropriate materials and/or significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading. Universal access, security etc. to be properly incorporated. Junction with Neelsie to be properly resolved.

The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIA.The front gardens should be appropriately landscaped to contribute more positively to the Rooiplein. A maintenance plan should be devised to preserve the remaining historic fabric.

Stellenbosch University plans archive.

The Perold building does not conform to the university typology, but occupies an important position within the university campus and strongly contributes to the “townscape” of the Rooiplein, setting up the east-west axis across the open space. It is a good example of the Cape Dutch Revival style, exhibiting fine design elements, craftsmanship and materials.

Double storey Cape Dutch Revival style building, u-shaped plan and with Marseilles tiled roof. Exposed brick plinth, plastered and painted upper levels, Italianate shaped sprokets to boarded eaves. Half-shuttered Cape Rev. sash windows, pedimented front door with engaged lantern in fanlight. Terracotta tiled entrance lobby, brick staircase with brass protea fineals on mental balustrade. Tiled internal window cills, timber picture rails throughout. 2 panel internal timber doors with plinth blocks to architraves, semi-basement laboratories, parquet flooring in the offices, but with carpet/vinyl in the corridors.Rennovation to roof in 2013/14 likely due to brittle roof tiles

Poor to fair. The building is showing some wear and tear, and ad hoc additions over time have made for a confusing structure.

Ungradable, no significance.

There is an opportunity to redevelop this building in a way that would formalise it and better showcase the research undertaken there to the surrounding structure and campus.

Alterations to this structure should not require a heritage permit, provided they conform to the campus heritage guidelines.

This building does not follow the university pattern. The established trees around its edges contribute to the greening along Merriman Avenue. It also showcases the research underway in the building to the broader Stellenbosch community.

Double storey greenhouse structure located between Natuurwekenskappe and Bedryfseilkunde building along Merriman Avenue. Steel structrue with glass and polycarbonate infill material, used as a greenhouse for Natuurwetenskappe. Building faces Merriman Avenue. Several established trees exist between it and the road edge.

Introduction of inappropriate materials and/or significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading. Universal access, security etc. to be properly incorporated.

General maintenance plan should be outlined to retain intrinsic qualities and materials. Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges. Removal of service buildings and modern additions along the Merriman edge is suggested. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIB.

The building is architecturally intact and follows the pattern of university buildings in its form, height, materiality and detailing. It is one of a cluster of Cape Dutch Revival style building in close proximity on this part of the campus. The building has associated significance with education. It is a good example of its type.

Poor. The internal alterations to turn an academic building into an office building has resulted in a very confused space. Many of the original finishes have been covered over with modern applications. The entrance onto the Rooiplein is now just a fire escape.

Grade IIIC.

There is an opportunity to find a more appropriate, academic use for the building that would enable it to address the Rooiplein better and create an active edge along the northern elevation.General maintenance plan should be outlined to retain intrinsic qualities and materials. Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges. The adaptive reuse of the structure for academic purposes should be considered. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIC.

Stellenbosch University plans archive.

This building was worked on by two of the most prolific architects on the campus. It follows the pattern of university buildings, and much of its interior is retrievable. The building has associated significance with the history of the education of women. The building forms the southern edge to the Rooiplein and also edges Victoria Street.

Three storey structure with a broad central turret. Granite rusticated plinth, horizontal paned casement steel windows with tophung fanlight, red tiled roof with replaced copper ridging, ventilated eaves. Plastered/painted with horizontal plaster lines and square engaged pillasters. Plaster dado moulding in corridors, “huishoudkunde” decorative fanlight above timber entrance door now leads into store. Much altered internally: carpet tiles, dropped ceilings, glass block walls. Terrazzo staircase under carpet, with barleysugar metal balustrade.

Some of the steel windows are rusting and have ad hoc ventilators installed into them. Eaves boarding is damaged in areas. The tiled concrete vaulted window canopies are later, possibly added by J.B. This is a highly intact, well detailed building of high craftsmanship and with fine materials. It both contributes to the pattern of the university and “streetscape” of the campus (Rooiplein) and of Victoria Street, while being an exceptional example of a university building. It is strongly associationed with the development of oenology and viticulture in the Western Cape.

Double storey building with roof loft above central bay, and basement. Granite plinth, with teak Cape Rev. door set into central arch. Corinthian pillasters divide 5 arched windows above with circular mounded vents above arched windows on upper level. Italianate sprokets, boarded eaves, cement tiled roof. Cross vaulted pointed arched cloisters with terracotta tiles and brick edging. Moulded granite columns, raised pointed brickwork to dado level. Timber doors and windows with leaded glass panels and splayed reveals.

Fair. The building would have received a higher heritage grading before the refurbishment, which resulted in the loss of patina and authentic historic material.

Grade IIIB.

Recent introduction of inappropriate materials, significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading, incorporation of universal access, security etc. has undermined building’s heritage significance. General maintenance plan should be outlined to retain intrinsic qualities and materials. Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges. A more sensitive restoration attempt is required to try and retrieve some heritage significance. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIB.

Stellenbosch University archive.

The building follows the pattern of university buildings. It is also one of a cluster of Cape Dutch Revival style building in close proximity on this part of the campus. The building has associated significance with education. It was the first structure to be built on the Rooiplein.

Double storey structure with single storey wings. New tiled roof with metal Boyle vents on wings, Italianate shaped sprokets and vented eaves, central timber turret. Three panel sashes with fixed top panel and plaster mouldings above on g.f. Cape Dutch Rev. style gables and front door. Victorian grand central stair with decorative metal fineal posts and balustrade. Some original timber floorboards remain. The building has been recently refitted with inappropriate flooring and lighting choices.

Good. The building was recently refurbished after it was damaged in a fire in December 2010.

Grade IIIC.

Introduction of inappropriate materials and/or significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading. Universal access, security etc. to be properly incorporated. The building could be made to more strongly and actively address the Admin A forecourt.Retention of the established trees of stature around the building’s edges. Retention of the original external elements, such as the granite plinth. Alterations to this structure should conform to the campus heritage guidelines. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIC.

Stellenbosch University plans archive.

This building is a typical Collins-designed structure. It generally follows the pattern of university buildings in its form, height, materiality and detailing, but some inappropriate alterations were made to the envelope after the 2010 fire. The building has associated significance with education. It defines the corner with Victoria Street but does not strongly address either the Ou Hoof Gebou or Admin A forecourt.

Three storey structure with double volume, glazed entrance lobby. Granite plinth, steel casement windows with toplights, modern columns, decorative sprokets with boarded eaves, tiled roof with replaced ridging and rooflights in some areas. Terrazzo lobby (incl. skirting) with mosaic columns, wood panelling, terrazzo stairs with mosaic insets and metral balustrades. Typical plaster dado in corridors with plain timber doors and architraves. Building faces Ou Hoof Gebou but is not on axis with it.
