I am also excited to announce that our awesome administrative team Mr. Douglas Atkins-Blaye (10), Mrs. Devon Hawks (9), Mr. Michael Kohlman (12), and Mr. Arnold Spiker (11) are also returning. We are looking forward to meeting our new students and families and we extend a huge welcome back to our returning members of the Pride. I am also excited to say we have retained over 90% of our fantastic faculty and have recruited motivated new teachers to help us reach our school goals. The faculty and staff have been working hard throughout the summer developing the latest instructional strategies and techniques in an effort to continue to meet the needs of all our students. Everyone is energized and thrilled about the upcoming school year! Our academic growth last year is evident with the success of students meeting/exceeding their individual growth targets in Math and Reading NWEA scores. At every grade level our students raised their RIT points from Fall to Winter. Our number one focus is student achievement! We are dedicated to providing every student with a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment. In addition to our academic growth and success, PHS has also reduced suspensions by 43% over the past 5 years. Together, as a team, we will work to help all students obtain their goals of graduating Peoria High School college and career ready. In an effort to provide additional interventions and supports for college and career readiness, we are excited for our fifth year of Peoria North. Peoria North is a recovery program for students who are behind grade level per credits with a classification of 9th grade. This program focuses on additional academic supports for success as well as credit recovery built into their daily schedule, behavior and attendance interventions and supports. All students attending Peoria North have the same opportunities as all PHS students with additional supports to return them to grade level and get them back on track for graduation. We are proud to continue our Pride Parent and Teacher Organization (PPTO) for the 2017-18 school year. We are looking for energetic parents to join the PPTO to assist in various activities to further support and celebrate the students and staff at Peoria High. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected]. We appreciate your support. Join today! Beginning Monday, August 7th, counselors will be available to assist parents with questions and concerns. Counselor hours will be 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. until school begins on August 16th for all students. As stated in the registration handbook, students cannot change classes after the first 15 days of school. The last day to request a change of classes is 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. Class changes are not guaranteed. We cannot go over class size limits. Changes will not be made because of an assigned teacher or to be with friends. We will have our Freshman Orientation and Back to School Night on Monday, August 14 th . Our Freshman Orientation will be from 5 – 6 pm. This will be a great opportunity to ensure your student is ready for his or her first year in high school. Any student “new” to Peoria High may also attend the freshman orientation. We will begin our Meet the Teacher Event at 6:30 pm in the main gym. Students and families will be able to receive their schedules, locker assignments, and meet their teachers. We will also have extra-curricular sponsors, coaches, and PHS Spirit wear available. A light dinner will also be served to everyone. Remember, school will begin on Wednesday, August 16 th . Our regular school day starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. The building opens daily for students at 7:00 am and students must leave the building by 2:45 if they are not with an adult sponsor/coach. Bus routes have changed this year, so please look for mail from our bus barn, or call transportation at 693-4418 to ensure your son or daughter will know the pick-up location and time. Students will receive a student planner/handbook containing all expectations here at Peoria High which should be reviewed by both parents and students and signed for verification. We look forward to continuing to establish positive and productive relationships with all of our Peoria High students and families to ensure a great school year. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year. We look forward to another great year at the Pride of the City! Sincerely, Annette Coleman, Principal
