8/31Best Practices In Law Enforcement InvestigationThis course is funded with CAIL’s Actual Innocence grant from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Featured speaker: Gregg O. McCrary (Behavioral Criminology International, Fredericksburg, VA)

Why don’t cases get solved? Unsolved crimes, unsuccessful prosecutions, unpunished offenders and wrongful convictions bring the criminal justice system into disrepute. Criminal investigative failures have serious consequences, but are rarely studied, and therefore their causes are not commonly understood. Mr. McCrary will tackle the question of “Why cases don’t get solved?”.

Topics

• What are the contributing causes of investigative failures• The role played by cognitive biases and probability errors • What impacts judgment and decision-making during investigations• Understanding and recognizing organizational traps and hazards• Recommendations for avoiding traps and hazards
