Financial Information 1. Application FeeA non-refundable application fee of HK$1,500 is payable on submission of the completed application form. An application is valid for one year, that is the January-December academic year for which the applicant is applying.

2. Application Renewal FeeA non-refundable application renewal fee of HK$500 will be charged to ensure the applicant remains on the wait list for a further year.

3. Assessment FeeStudents attending assessments are required to pay a non-refundable assessment fee of HK$500 per student. The need for an assessment will be determined after the application has been reviewed by the School.

There may be a requirement for Secondary students, whose native language is not English, to attend a standardised English assessment. Please contact the Admissions Office for further information.

4. Reservation DepositA reservation deposit of HK$10,000 is required at the time of acceptance of an enrolment. This deposit is credited to the annual tuition fee when the student commences at the School. Enrolment becomes final only after the School has received the reservation deposit.

Reservation deposits for new students are only refunded if the School receives written notification (email is acceptable) of a student’s cancellation, or change of requested start date, within seven (7) days after the payment is received. This deadline is strictly adhered to.

Cheques should be made payable to “Australian International School Foundation Limited”. (Payment may be made by cash, HKD cheque, direct deposit or internet/telegraphic transfer to the School’s bank account. Credit card payments are not available)

Bank account details are:Account Name: Australian International School Foundation Limited/AIS Hong KongBank Code: 015 (BEA)Branch: 514Account Number: 40-56455-9Bank Name: The Bank of East Asia LimitedBank Address: 10 Des Voeux Road, Central, Hong KongSwift Code: BEASHK HH

NB: If paying by telegraphic/internet transfer to our bank account, please make sure that our bank account will be credited with the full fee including Hong Kong bank charges (usually HK$230). Please provide a scanned copy of the bank deposit confirmation once you have made the payment.

5. DebenturesThere are two types of debentures:

5.1 Depreciating Debentures (depreciable annually)A Depreciating Debenture (current value $100,000) must be purchased by each student on acceptance of a place at AISHK. Under certain circumstances an arrangement may be made to purchase a debenture by instalments. Please contact our Business Administrator should you wish to discuss this option. Debentures depreciate on an annual basis. They may depreciate to zero or be partially refunded when the student leaves the School before the debenture is fully depreciated.

Debentures are depreciated by 12.5% of the Initial Principal Sum at the beginning of each school year (1 January) for eight (8) years. (Note: This represents the equivalent of paying an annual capital levy of $12,500, which is considerably less than the ever increasing capital levies that many other schools in Hong Kong charge. It also ensures that the annual contribution remains fixed throughout the life of the debenture). If a student starts during a school year, depreciation on a pro-rata basis will be charged for the first year only. The full depreciating rate per annum will apply thereafter.

An example to illustrate how the Depreciating Debenture works:• A student withdraws after attending school for four (4) years• A total of HK$50,000 (HK$12,500x4), being the remaining sum after 4 years of depreciation, will be refunded

to the parents on the student’s last day of school. The remaining balance of the Depreciating Debenture will be refunded on the student’s last day of school, subject to the payment of tuition fees and any other outstanding amount.

5.2 Gold Debentures (non-refundable) A limited number of Gold Debentures (current value HK$3,000,000) are available. The Gold Debenture is non-refundable and non-transferable. If desired, there will be an acknowledgment of the gift on a professionally designed, permanent and fixed display in the lobby of the School and in the Foundations’ publications. The nominated child must meet the usual entry requirements described in the Rules of Admission as laid down by AISHK. For more information on this debenture, please contact the Admissions Office.

6. Capital Levy The payment of the Capital Levy is only offered to those families who have multiple children accepting enrolment into AISHK at the same time. The capital levy must be paid on acceptance of being offered a place. The levy amount is reviewed each year and is currently HK$19,400 per student per annum. The capital levy is payable annually at the beginning of each school year.

7. Withdrawal of studentsTo withdraw a student, notice in writing must be addressed to the Head of Division and submitted to the Admissions Office not less than one term, or three months, before the student leaves. For students who will not return to AISHK after the Christmas holiday period, official notice has to be given not later than the last day of Term 3. The Australian International School Foundation Limited will charge school fees if the above period of notice is not adhered to, counting from the day of receipt of the official written notice of withdrawal. The fee penalty will be based on one terms fees. Where a student withdraws during a school year the full year’s capital levy will be payable.

In the case of outstanding school fees and other unpaid invoices, AISHK reserves the right to withhold the School report of the student(s) concerned. Depreciating debentures are held for a minimum of six (6) months before they can be redeemed. If the student withdraws from AISHK within the first six (6) months, the debenture may not be redeemed until six (6) months from the date of withdrawal. Any debenture refunds will not be considered for payment until all fees owing to AISHK or other outstanding accounts are cleared.

UniformsAll students who attend the Australian International School Hong Kong are required to wear the School Uniform as outlined in our School Handbook. The publication is located on the school website in the Parent Pack. Should you have any questions in this regard, please contact [email protected].

The Uniform Shop is located on the 1/F of the school, adjacent to the cafeteria. Opening hours are Monday and Thursday from 8:00 to 3:30pm during term time only. The shop does operate special hours for new students, which are communicated via email.

Our Uniform Shop is managed by Midas Ltd and their on-site manager is happy to assist you with any queries you may have regarding purchasing of School uniforms for your child/children. Their contact details are as follows:Telephone: +852 2194 3832 Email: [email protected]

LunchesStudents from Preparatory Year upwards have their lunch at school. The school cafeteria accommodates students during the three lunch breaks established for each of early childhood, upper primary and secondary. Reheating facilities are not available.

Students may:• Bring a packed lunch from home

We recommend a thermal lunch box or frozen drink be used for cooling purposes in summer.• Order from the school caterer “Chartwells”

Hot lunches can be ordered and paid for in advance at a discount. Secondary students can order in advance to receive the discount or buy lunch daily over the counter.

• Use the school tuckshopSandwiches, hot food items such as mini pizzas and snack items such as fruit, fruit juices, health bars, crackers, yoghurt and milk drinks are available from the tuckshop. Carbonated soft drinks, sweets, ice-creams etc. are not available.

Bus ServicesKwoon Chung Motors Co Ltd. is contracted to provide the school bus services for most areas of Hong Kong, except the south side of the Hong Kong Island and Discovery Bay/Lantau Island. The buses pick up students at various times between 6:40am and 7:45am. The Bus Company aims to have buses arriving at school between 7:55 - 8:00am. All buses depart from school at 3:00pm sharp.

Reception class (AM) children finish school at 11:15am and Reception class (PM) children start at 11:45am. It is imperative that Reception class parents understand that a Reception class bus will only be provided if there are sufficient Reception children in a similar area, to justify running a bus at these earlier times.

All buses are minibus (24 seater) with air-conditioning and bus supervisor. Bus fares are to be paid by the Semester in advance directly to Kwoon Chung Motors Co Ltd. Bus fares vary between HK$6,770 and HK$10,370 per child per half year. A detailed copy of the latest bus schedule can be obtained from the School website.

To ensure the most up-to-date information is received by parents, including pick-up and drop-off points, times and fare payable, please visit the bus company’s website www.school.kcm.com.hk/ais or contact the company directly.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHow early can I submit an application for my child? We accept applications two (2) years in advance prior to the expected year of entrance. For example, if your child is age appropriate for our Reception class in 2019, you may submit an application as early as January 2017.

Is there a deadline for application? For Reception to Year 10 applications are accepted all year round.

At AISHK, our Year 11 students have an option to study courses offered in either the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. It is a pre-requisite for these students to complete the courses in two consecutive years, prior to obtaining the tertiary entrance qualifications. For this reason, Year 11 applications are not accepted after Term 1 and Year 12 applications are not accepted under normal circumstances.

Are priorities given to students on the waiting list?Yes, priorities are given to siblings of current students as well as Australian/New Zealand passport holders and date of application. We will also take into account gender equity because it is important to have a balanced mix of girls and boys in each class.

Can I make changes to the term or year of admission I would like my child to be considered for enrolment at AISHK? What costs/conditions are involved?Your application has a currency of one (1) year, the academic year for which the applicant is applying. You may defer your child’s application once within the same academic year with no monetary or priority penalty. For example, you may wish to defer your child’s application from Term 1 to Term 3 in Year 6, 2017. However, if the requested change falls outside that academic year (January-December), then an application deferral fee of HK$500 applies. For example, if your child’s application is deferred from Term 1 in Year 6, 2017 to Term 1 in Year 7, 2018, the deferral fee would apply. Alternatively, you may wish to bring forward your child’s application enrolment date. The same policy applies. Please also note when an application is deferred to a new academic year the date of application (for priority purposes) changes from the original date the application was received to the date we receive payment for the deferment.

What are the school hours?Reception classes are a half-day session Monday-Friday. Morning Reception class hours are 8:15am to 11:15am. Afternoon Reception class hours are 11:45am to 2:45pm. Primary student begin at 8:15am and their day ends at 2:50pm, Secondary students begin at 8:15am and their day ends at 3:30pm except on Monday where the majority of students finish school at 2:35pm.

How long has the school been operating?Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK) opened in February 1995, to meet the needs of the Australian community in Hong Kong and those interested in an Australian education system for their children.

Is the school open only to Australians? No. Children of all nationalities are welcome. Currently over 80% of students studying with us are Australian or New Zealand passport holders. The school offers an Australian curriculum (NSW) and the IB Diploma (Year 11 and 12 only) which are continually evaluated and modified according to the needs of the students. Whichever country the student returns to, AISHK aims to develop attitudes, values and skills that will form a solid foundation for all future learning.

Are the teachers mainly Australians? The majority of teaching staff are Australian but we do have teachers from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Where is the school located? Our school campus is located at 3A Norfolk Road, Kowloon Tong. The site is located among low-rise residential dwellings and other school campuses. It is readily accessible to an efficient transport interchange including taxis, buses, MTR.

Is the school readily accessible to students living on Hong Kong Island?Yes. Approximately 25% of the students currently attending AISHK come from Hong Kong Island. The early morning start was specifically implemented to reduce the travelling time. The school bus service covers most areas of the territory. The campus is located within close walking distance of the Kowloon Tong MTR station.

What classes does the school offer? Our academic program is divided into the following Divisions:Pre-school (Reception class), Primary (Preparatory Year and Years 1 to 6) and Secondary (Years 7 to 12).

How many students do you have in each class? We strive to keep our class sizes as close to 25 as possible, and 20 in the Reception classes.

How many students are enrolled at the school? In January 2017 we have 1,112 students. There are 690 Primary students and 422 Secondary students.

Is there a Special Needs program at AISHK? No, AISHK is a parent funded not for profit school. We do not have the resources to provide IEP’s or other required special needs programs.

Is there Learning Enrichment at AISHK?Yes. AISHK caters for student diversity and provides an inclusive model of extension and support in the mainstream. Learning enrichment is coordinated through our Learning Enrichment Centre (LEC) team across the School. Unlike schools in Australia, AISHK does not receive government funding, educational support, offer alternative curriculum pathways or individualised programs for students. In Secondary, curriculum choices are between two (2) examination pathways; HSC and IB Diploma. If your child has received or needs support or extension, please contact our Admissions staff for assistance.

Will my child have to undertake an entry or assessment interview?Upon receiving a completed application for admission,

including School reports for the past two (2) years, the Head of Division will decide if the student needs to be assessed prior to entry. Many students coming from Australia where the education systems are closely related to ours, may not require assessment prior to entry. A student who has applied for a particular class but whose age is out of the age range guide may need assessment, as may a student coming from a different curriculum. Most students with a first language other than English are assessed, as are those who need learning support. The School will endeavour to place your child in the class that is right for his/her academic and social development, not just the class the child is old enough to attend. An assessment interview is undertaken by professional teachers to ensure that an applicant has attained a level of English that will enable him/her to succeed in the classroom and to ensure correct placement. This process gives us a better understanding of your child’s general development, problem areas etc. Further assessment for all children takes place during their first few weeks following their commencement of school.

Does AISHK provide English language support? No. Students must satisfy the English level entrance requirements before admitting to the school.

What examinations do the students undergo? As in Australia, students are tested internally throughout the year to ensure they have achieved the educational outcomes of the curriculum. As part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests are held each year for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students in Years 11 and 12 elect to study for either the Higher School Certificate exam (HSC) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Hong Kong examinations are not available. Each year, students may participate in the Australian schools' competitions for Mathematics, English, Science and Computer Studies.

What does the Chinese component of the curriculum entail? The study of Chinese is mandatory from Reception to Year 6. Primary students have one (1) Chinese lesson every school day. Part of the extensive planning and preparation for AISHK Chinese program included researching the way Chinese is taught in different countries. The official policy in Australia is that Mandarin is the Chinese language (all other forms are dialects) and that it is taught using simplified characters. The same policy operates in China, Singapore, USA, Canada, and New Zealand. The program will enable AISHK students to sit for an Australian Higher School Certificate or IB Diploma examination in Year 12 and qualify for further studies at university. The Chinese program emphasises communication through talking and listening, reading, responding and writing. A learner-centred approach is used which actively involves the students in a wide variety of activities. Chinese classes are streamed according to ability and background from Year 2 onwards.

But my child does not know any Chinese - how will he/she learn? In any classroom you will find students who are completely new to the language, others that have a developed understanding and those that are native speakers. Our Chinese teachers will assess your child upon enrolment

and place him/her with other students of the same level or similar. He/she will be introduced to the language in a fun and stimulating way so that the most benefit is derived by the student. If children have difficulties, parents and teachers discuss possible solutions.

What does the Reception class offer?A structured learning program based on the developmental needs of the child, where individual needs are catered for. When the child is ready, there is an increase in the educational challenges faced and exposure to the Early Childhood curriculum. Further, there is integration into some areas of whole school activities. The class ensures a smooth transition into full time schooling.

Are extra curricular activities offered?Yes. There is an extensive range of extra curricular activities offered from Preparatory Year onwards. The broad aim is to enable students to experience as many cultural, sporting, artistic and craft activities as possible.

Are parents welcome at the school?Yes. The School has a parental involvement policy which recognises that parents are partners in the education process of their child. Parents are actively encouraged to participate in school activities. An open door policy exists whereby parents are both informed and consulted on the education of their child. The School recognises that parents are taking a greater interest than ever before in the quality and nature of their child’s education. Parents opinions are sought and considered on numerous matters regarding the education of their child. Do I have to buy a debenture or pay a capital levy for my child to study at AISHK?Yes. All students are required to have a debenture purchased or a capital levy paid for them before they start. Funds received from debentures and capital levies will be used to finance capital improvement projects, fund ongoing capital maintenance, as well as enhancing learning resources and opportunities. For more details about debentures and capital levies please refer to the “Financial Information” section under the Application Information tab on our webite.

Can I pay by credit card? No. Payments must be in Hong Kong Dollars (HKD). We accept payment for the application and enrolment fees by cash, HKD cheque from a HK bank account, HKD bank draft, internet/telegraphic transfer or direct deposit to the school’s bank account. For the details about the School’s bank account please refer to the “Financial Information” section on page 5 of this document.

Does my child need to have a visa before I submit the application? No. You can submit the application, with all the other required documentation, and send a copy of the visa once it has been stamped in your child’s passport. Note: A valid student or dependant visa must be in place prior to enrolment. This is a Hong Kong government mandatory requirement.
