Core ConviviumDivision of Communication & Creative Media, EATS, 3rd FloorVisit us anytime between 9:30 AM–12:30 PM or at the time indicated on your schedule. The Core is Champlain’s signature general education program. Please join us for a banquet of student work in the Core!

COR 110: Concepts of the Self presents a self-portrait galleryFirst-year students in COR 110 examine “concepts of the self” through four different disciplinary perspectives: neuroscience, art, literature, and psychology. At semester’s end, students are asked to create self-portraits that reflect their own self-understanding and demonstrate an understanding of the various academic disciplines encountered in COR 110. The self-portraits on display encompass a stunning variety of artistic styles, mediums, and messages.

COR 220: Aesthetic ExpressionsWhat is art? How do literature and music express both traditional and revolutionary ideas? Student projects explore these and other questions of aesthetics.

COR 230: Ethics and the EnvironmentThe decisions that humans make about the environment today will decide the fate of future generations. On display will be a selection of poster projects that highlight local environmental policy research.

COR 240: BodiesHow do we know ourselves through our physical bodies? How are different types of bodies represented in our arts and media? And how does the body influence the way we think about the world? View student projects that explore embodiment.

LOCAL CONTEXTS/GLOBAL CONNECTIONSCOR 330: Shaking the Spirit: Sacred Arts of the Afro-Caribbean World presents Boutey Vodou: Student art inspired by the artists of Grand Rue, Port au Prince, HaitiIn the material and ritual arts of the Afro-Atlantic world, richly decorated bottles serve various symbolic functions. Students—inspired by these traditional arts and their creators —have fashioned their own bottles, exploring the bottle as, for example, symbol and metaphor for the trans-Atlantic slave trade; the commodification of culture; the fluidity of personal and communal identities. What’s in a bottle? Through art and analysis, Champlain students offer complex answers to this deceptively simple question.

FACULTY-LED TRAVEL COURSESMeet Core faculty and students who have recently returned from course trips. This year, groups visited India, England, the Galapagos Islands, Italy, and Zanzibar, where students delivered computers to an elementary school. The students will share stories and photographs of their experiences.

TRANSFER STUDENTS AND INTEGRATIVE THINKINGStudents who transfer into Champlain take a special seminar designed to foster integrative thinking. The highlight of the semester is the students’ interdisciplinary, integrative projects.

GLOBAL STUDIES MINORCOR 470: Global Studies SeminarStudents enrolled in our Global Studies minor will provide guests a description of what it means to be a global citizen, share their own travel magazine, and offer a chance to pledge commitment to global citizenship.

PIZZERIA VERITÀ156 St Paul Street

“I absolutely love Pizzeria Verità. There are a few good pizza places around Burlington, but Pizzeria Verità has some incredible choices and a few very unique dishes. I personally love their Brussels sprouts pizza, but they have plenty of classic options as well. No matter what you order here, you won’t be disappointed. It can get pretty busy there on the weekends so I usually try to make a reservation before I go.” –Charlie Carucci, ’18

REVOLUTION KITCHEN9 Center Street

“This is a great option for vegetarians or vegans or anyone wanting to try those types of dishes. You’d be surprised how much you’ll like the vegan tacos, and the desserts are to die for! Revolution Kitchen is open for dinner most weekdays and Saturday.” –Haley Parent, ’18

FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH310 Pine Street

“This small sandwich shop has a large variety of options inspired by cuisine and flavors from all over the world. I love trying something different every time I eat there. The art is really funky and entertaining too! It’s a cash-only restaurant, but they have an ATM inside.”

–Zynab Makki, ’19
