SITUATION
The Mission of First Nations University is “to enhance the
quality of life, and to preserve, protect and interpret the
history, language, culture and artistic heritage of First
Nations.”
My Strategic Communication Plan will help you
achieve these objectives by recruiting new faculty
members to do research and teach at FNUniv. These new
faculty will conduct research that will “preserve, protect
and interpret the history, language, culture and artistic
heritage of First Nations.” So my campaign will assist
you to achieve your organizational objective, as
stated in your Mission Statement.

Shannon’s PlanAUDIENCE
The primary audience of my strategic communication plan (which has the objective of recruiting new
faculty members to teach and do research at the First Nations University) is
•First Nations/Aboriginal academics/scholars from other Canadian universities
Rationale – This target audience has the most potential to contribute to FNUniv’s efforts to achieve its
mission of being a post-secondary institution that will will “preserve, protect and interpret the history,
language, culture and artistic heritage of First Nations.”
From my research, I found that in Canada, there are 84 First Nations/Aboriginal academics/scholars
teaching at other universities. They are my total target audience. In order to understand what will
motivate them to consider taking a position at FNUniv, I decided to do an informal survey of current
FNUniv faculty members who were hired in the last five years. I interviewed 11 FNUniv faculty
members. I did the survey face-to-face in a coffee shop near campus. The survey questionnaire is
included in my Appendices.
The findings of my survey are that current FNUniv faculty applied to teach at FNUniv for these reasons::
First Nations University is Indian-controlled
Opportunity to work with other First Nations scholars
First Nations University has a federation agreement with the University of Regina, so has the benefits
of a larger university

These findings will be
reflected in the development
of the key message, that will
be used in advertisements. A
draft ad is included in the
Appendices.

When you are doing informal research related to your project, what question do you want to ask?
Every project should have some evidence gathered from informal surveys
Informal surveys can make you look smart (credible) and provides evidence that there is a need for your campaign
Make sure you tell the reader how you did the research and what the results were.
