Hair News 7

Leading the way are Sebastian, who have developed a whipped mousse conditioner that spreads over the hair easily making sure it covers each individual strand. Sebastian Professional Colour Ignite Multi Tone/Single Tone Conditioner, £14.50, also protects your mane in a unique way. Depending on whether you dye your locks a block colour or have highlights, this tailored conditioner recognises the changes in shades and protects accordingly. Resulting in long-lasting colour and lots of shine!

Foam home hair colourants are also making an impact on the market. Forward thinking nice’n easy and John Frieda have launched their versions already. nice’n easy Colour Blend Foam, £6.99, is available in 18 shades and offers 100% grey coverage. ALV predict foam will revolutionise the dye-at-home experience. Smooth and drip-free, it’ll lead to a much easier and more enjoyable process.

John Frieda Precision Foam Colour, £9.99, promises salon-perfect results at home. Nicola Clarke (Creative Colour Director at John Frieda) claims; “We’ve taken the fear out of home colouring by making the process easy, clean and effortless; creating a product that gives perfect coverage and a truly professional colour result.”

Yes you read that right, companies are developing products with textures that feel like your spreading shaving foam all over your tresses. From home colour kits to conditioners, this innovative formula is going to dominate your bathroom cupboard in 2011.

What next… foam shampoo, foam hairspray? If this white stuff’s really as good as they say it is, we see lots of love for foam in the future! alv

Available from www.rocknrose.co.uk , a gorgeous girly site, where you can stock up on all kinds of bespoke accessories with a vintage feel. Check out their charm friendship bracelets too, so cute!

Who knew that YouTube offered a wealth of information when it came to hair styling? We love the helpful hair ‘do tutorials on the site; most of them are really easy to follow. It’s great to actually watch someone creating a style rather than just reading about how to do it. A couple of popular ladies seem to be making quite the impression styling their locks; here are a few of our favourites…

“Natural, dark and glossy, brunette ends show a natural fade and lightening to look organic and unrefined. Hair is rich and pure with tones of praline, chestnut and chocolate fading and reversing out so ends are bronzy and beachy. This is leftover summer colour, light reflecting and glistening with subtle tones of cinnamon & hazel.”Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa

On the Catwalk

Alessandro Dell’Acqua went for full on glam, with super dark roots and light glowing ends. A contrast of slick and voluptuous textures highlighted the change in colour further.

Betty Jackson opted for gradual balayage, fading from dark to light with no blonde in sight. A natural take on this look, the different shades really refresh the model’s long brunette locks.

Cynthia Steffe’s grown-out blonde mane is the ultimate summer style. Notice you can’t see where the chocolate shade ends and the honey blonde begins. A cute bow headband adds a girly touch to the hair.

Imagine colouring your mane and NOT having to worry about root growth, instead you rock a relaxed style that’s easy to maintain and totally on trend too… Thank heavens for the Catwalk! Ombré Hair, or ‘dip-dyed’ tresses (dark roots with light ends) is going to take over and be the big colour trend this season.

“If you’re considering having Ombré colour, then a rich conditioning masque like JOICO® K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor is a must! Remember, the ends of your hair will be incredibly fragile, so using a masque like this weekly, will restore damaged hair .”George Papanikolas, LA A-list colourist

When Jack Frost comes a knockin’ we know it’s time to treat those tresses! The winter months can play havoc with our hair and leave us looking more frazzled than fabulous. Here at ALV we have put together some of the best products and tips to keep your hair under control in this rather chilly weather.

Oh Baby,

Page 27: Adonis Loves Venus Issue One

This issue Winter Hair 27

Trim and Treat To Keep Tresses Tip TopRegular cuts and treatments are vitally important in the winter months to keep hair healthy. Just like skin our hair becomes dehydrated from increased exposure to central heating, coupled with adverse weather conditions, not to mention the effects from blow drying and styling. Trims tackle those tatty ends whilst treatments such as Redken’s shot treatments are fantastic at delivering a much needed boost of protein, moisture or colour protection and can be mixed to cater to individual needs. Hair is left looking healthy and shiny with results lasting for up to 8 shampoos, so you can enjoy gorgeous looking locks this winter!

Customise Your ColourIf you’re a lady that likes to tint her tresses, it’s essential to review your colour regime for the winter months. Glosses or semi permanent colours are gentler on the condition of the hair than permanent shades and also give fabulous shine, which is ideal for the colder months. If a permanent formulation is essential to cover grey or to alter colour, rather than enhance, it’s imperative to use salon prescriptive products to help protect and provide longevity for your colour throughout the winter months leaving your hue looking vibrant and full of shine.

Fight FrizzIf your hair turns to frizz at even the hint of dampness, the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy or the permanent blow dry, as it’s been dubbed, is a fantastic way to combat the side effects of a damp, wet winter leaving you with a blow-dry that’s unaffected by the elements. Its formulation infuses Keratin deep into the hair cuticle eliminating up to 95% of frizz and curl from the hair, leaving it soft, shiny and luxurious whilst dramatically cutting down styling time by over half. What’s more results last approximately 12 weeks!

ShortAn undercut or a really short crop is great for your hair in the winter, although your head may get a little cold! The length requires your hair to be trimmed regularly meaning all those dry ends from too much central heating will get snipped.Jamie StevenS, Celebrity Hairdresser of tHe yearerrol douglas, london sW1X 8lb 02072350110 and Jamie stevens, somerset ta7 8Hn 01278 683 413

Mid LengthA great midlength style perfect for winter is a graduated bob; it has a strong shape making it easy to manage on winter mornings when you would rather stay in bed! The versatility of the bob is great too, being able to change your look when you need to is a must.Rae PalmeR, sCHWarzkopf essensity and blondme ambassador, soutHsea po5 3pt 023 9242 6622.

LongA great style for long hair in winter is the grungey look that has been everywhere. It’s a good idea because long hair can be hard to control and become frizzy while wearing scarves or hats and with this style the messier the better! Sea salt spray is the most important grunge product as it takes away the “just washed” look and gives the hair a matte texture. michael BaRneS, 224 sHaftesbury ave, london WC2H 8eb 020 7836 7152

Creating products that will penetrate the sophisticated and saturated UK beauty market is by no means an easy task. With a plethora of anti-ageing products already on the market, it is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to find new and innovative ways to differentiate themselves and reach out to consumers. A massive 62% of UK women said that fine lines and wrinkles were at the top of the list of their aging concerns, which obviously explains why a startling 51% of ladies in the UK use anti-wrinkle products. With the market value expected to reach £5.5 billion by 2013, it’s no wonder that beauty brands want a slice of this lucrative pie. (Stats: Mintel)

How is this produced? The cellular activators in BIOEFFECT are produced with the ‘Orfeus’ system, which is a plant system whereby proteins are produced in the genetically modified seeds of barley plants. All other companies that use cellular activators in their skin care products, use proteins produced in genetically modified bacteria (E. coli), hamster cells or yeast. By producing the EGF cellular activator in plants, it is possible to achieve an unparalleled level of activity and purity.

So how does this work? By activating certain biological processes within the cells thus stimulating the skins own renewal process, in turn improving the overall appearance and texture. By applying the EGF Serum onto skin, it is possible to fix and/or slow down the biological processes of ageing and increase production of elastin and collagen.

What does this mean for your skin?An increased glow, moisture and a more even skin tone. In the longer term, you will notice fewer and less noticeable wrinkles and overall more youthful looking skin. alv

Dramatic and interesting, this look is so simple to recreate. Think un-done smoky eyes in richer, more appealing shades rather than just block grey or black. ALV love combining chocolate brown with a light blue/green glistening liner, contrasting warm & cool tones is the key to achieving this captivating look.

Intriguing Eyes

1 Use a dark brown eye shadow all over the lid and into the socket; apply a lot of colour so you can blend without lightening the shade. 2 Line under the eye with a light shimmery liner, blending slightly with your finger. 3 Apply a coating of lengthening mascara for longer looking lashes. 4 Pat a small amount of foundation over your lips for a neutral pout.

Pretty Perfect Pout

Cosmetic and plastic surgeon Mr Alex Karidis said ‘More and more people are having treatments to enhance their appearance these days. Whilst at the same time more emphasis is being placed on shorter recovery and minimally invasive procedures. Non surgical procedures are becoming more popular for people who are looking to pre-empt and prevent things like ageing.’ Mintel’s latest research also reveals that just one third (32%) of British adults feel they don’t need cosmetic surgery and expense remains the biggest deterrent to would be patients, with over half (58%) of Brits claiming this reason for not having it. With the rise in VAT, impending redundancy and a generally cash strapped UK, it seems that although the rising storm for perfection is mounting, cheaper alternatives still remain at the forefront. Over the next few pages we look at some of the alternatives to more pricey and permanent procedures, that can still have you looking fab with none of the pain and for less of the cost!

According to Mintel the number of non-surgical procedures performed in the UK has risen from 950,000 in 2008 to 1.1 million in 2009. They account for 92% of all cosmetic surgery procedures performed, taking 74% of market value. Surgical procedures have grown almost 9% between 2008 and 2010 and Mintel forecast the whole market to grow to £3.6 billion by 2015.

What is it?It is a device that shapes and slims the body by reducing cellulite and firming problem areas such as the thighs, buttocks or stomach.

How does it work?Velashape features the unique elos™ technology, this technology is a combination of Radiofrequency and Infrared Light Energy teemed with vacuum and mechanical massage that deploys targeted heat to adipose tissue. This combination increases lymphatic drainage and shrinks the size of the actual fat cells and chambers, resulting in a smoother skin surface and a noticeable reduction in cellulite.

What’s the verdict?I was more than sceptical about this treatment, having tried many a cellulite cream in my time I was of the opinion nothing would shift it! On the cellulite-scale I would say mine was a 3 (1 being help me! And 5 being barely there). I had 5 sessions of Velashape on the backs and sides of my thighs and my buttocks. In total each session lasted about 20 minutes and just felt like a very hot hoover sucking at my skin, it wasn’t painful but the machine does get quite hot. After the first session I did notice a slight improvement in the look of my skin, my thighs looked smoother, so I was of course thrilled. After my 3rd session I really started to notice a visible reduction in my cellulite and my bum was firmer too. A couple of weeks after my last session was the major upside for me though, the whole area looked smoother, tighter and my cellulite was a lot less visible. The treatment isn’t cheap and it is no way a miracle cure for cellulite, but it does work! It’s advisable to continue the treatments from time-to-time as sort of a top up, so it’s important to factor that into your costs too. alv

What is it?Nobody likes it when their cakes don’t rise do they? Well this is a 3-step butt lifting system that lifts, firms and plumps your derriére.

How does it work?It combines booty-boosting excersises with a Butt Plumping Catalyst Cream and a Lifting & Firming Emulsion designed to decrease the appearance of cellulite in 2 weeks and give you a rounder, plumper behind in 3 weeks.

What’s the verdict? To be honest I have been fairly blessed in the derrière department, but everyone could benefit from a little lift from time to time! I decided to go full throttle on this and do the system twice a day for 4 weeks as recommended, well I really needn’t have bothered! The only good thing about this product is the fact that it encourages you to do targeted excersises. My bum felt slightly firmer and lifted, but I’m very sure that was down to the excersises and not the provided lotions and potions. To be honest I would say pop your cash back in your wallet and get yourself to the gym or do a few squats and lunges in your bedroom mirror everyday, you will undoubtedly get the same effect! alv

What is it?A cream packed with multivitamins that claims to increase breasts by up to one cup-size in just 8 weeks.

How does it work?It has a lipo-filling effect thanks to a vital Bio-Extract called Volufiline – this promotes the natural process of accumulating lipds (fat) in the adipose cells (fat cells) supporting the skin.

What’s the verdict? To get the desired effect it is suggested you use the cream morning and evening for 8 weeks using a gentle massage technique. It’s all very easy and doesn’t really add much time to my already lengthy beauty regime. Having been at the back of the queue when God was handing out bosom, I was keen to follow it through and see some results. About halfway in I did notice that my breasts were a little rounder and perkier, it wasn’t a massive improvement, but for me it made a subtle difference. After the full course my boobs were definitely a little plumper, I wouldn’t go as far as to say they went up a cup size, but I did notice some oomph! This is by no means an alternative to a boob job or Macrolane injections, but it’s great for a boost or to sort out post pregnancy-sagging. In short, if you just want a little lift and boost give it a try! alv

Pupa Breast Enhancement

What is it?Pretty much the same as Butt Lift In A Box only for boobs! It’s a three-step system that promises rounder, sexier more eye-catching breasts

How does it work?A combination of Plumping Catalyst Cream, Bust Toning Emulsion and a specialised Boob Lifting and Toning Programme.

What’s the verdict? This once a day regime consisted of two different creams and a lot of exercise! Firstly you had to apply the bust plumping cream, then you had to put on the bust toning emulsion and finally you had to do various lifting and toning exercises. All this meant I had to get out of bed half an hour earlier! Instead of shelling out £72 for this little boob job box, I suggest you go and invest in a good gym membership. Yes the targeted exercise made me ache and feel like I was actually toning that area, but I doubt the cream had any effect. Plus during my four-week trial of this product, I didn’t really see any improvement. alv

Emma Hardie natural lift & sculpting facial

Face facts

How to get this trend

What is it?A non-invasive natural lift and sculpting facial treatment that uses a ground-breaking technique to stimulate the repair of body tissue, by using the body’s own cell and tissue regenerating bio electrical thermal energy.

How does it work?Skin Supremo Emma Hardie’s passion and research developed from her own experiences of a 12yr debilitating illness. After a serious collapse, she healed and rejuvenated not only her body but also her face using nothing more than her body’s own self- healing process. In her inspired facial treatment, Emma uses a manual skin and muscle softening technique that instantly releases any tension held in the face, enabling an unrestricted flow of energy, nutrients and oxygen to all areas of the skin and muscles. The cells instantly start to regenerate, repair and detoxify. The result is that the skin is softer, plumper, luminous and more elastic.

What’s the verdict? It’s hard to not instantly relax when you meet Emma as she is just a fabulous and inspiring women! After chatting about my skin concerns, problem areas and lifestyle Emma sets to work. Making sure you are in the most relaxed state possible she then cleanses and prepares your face (all with her own range of products) and then begins the technique. It feels like a gentle facial massage, but the thing that sets this apart is the feelings you get in other parts of the body! I had tingly toes and fingers and I felt really light and stress-free. When the treatment had finished I was astonished by the results, my face was much more chiselled, my puffy eyes were reduced and my neck was reminiscent of a swan (ok maybe that was a bit OTT), but I looked and felt amazing. Not only is this treatment relaxing, but it actually works the very first time! alv

What is it?A facial that uses a specially shaped spiral tip that exfoliate and removes impurities along with applying various serums that cleanse, hydrate and provide antioxidant infusion.

How does it work? The HydraFacial treatment works by removing dead skin cells and extracting impurities that lie within the skin. It simultaneously bathes the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturising serums safely improving skin quality by increasing its thickness, repairing the dermal matrix and delivering beneficial antioxidants. This action provides improved facial tone and texture, less skin colour patchiness and fewer fine lines.

What’s the verdict?I was really looking forward to this treatment as my skin was looking really dull and tired from far too many late nights and a fair few Christmas drinks. After discussing my expectations and skin issues with my practitioner she set to work. The treatment was very relaxing and didn’t hurt one bit, apart from a slight tingling sensation, I couldn’t feel a thing. After my facial was finished I was taken to the mirror for the great unveiling. My skin looked plump, fresh and was really glowing, so much so I didn’t even put my make-up back on! alv

How to get this trend

What is it?A firming concentrate designed to combat unwanted curves in the stomach and waist area.

How does it work?It contains an exclusive complex of Active Caffeine, which helps to reduce fat cells thus cellulite and Glaucine Complex, which is a pure biotechnology molecule based on the Yellow Hornpoppy that enables fat cells to completely eliminate their fat diminishing their volume. It also aides the transformation of fat cells into ‘fibroblastic-type’ cells, these newly formed cells possess the ability to synthesise collagen and improve the skin’s firmness.

What’s the verdict?Well according to the packaging you have to massage the product into your waist and stomach in circular motions morning and night for 28 days, so that’s what I did! By the end of the treatment I didn’t notice any reduction in fat whatsoever, but I did agree that the skin on my stomach was a lot firmer and smoother. If you’re looking for a quick way to a flat stomach then don’t look over here, but if you just want to tighten up an already decent tummy then give it a go. alv

Lierac Morpho-Slim

What is it?A daily ab toner that promises a flatter, more toned tum.

How does it work?It is created with a revolutionary formula called ‘amarashape’ this clinically proven product helps to tone, smooth, tighten and slim the tummy area. AmaraShape uses a highly effective combination of fat burning actives to refine body contours such as the waist- the active substances are caffeine and synephrine. Both of these ingredients activate the breakdown of lipids in fat cells of the adipose tissue (body fat) thus giving you a marvellous midriff!

What’s the verdict? This hotly coveted product from the makers of Rodial was on every gal’s wish list. A toned tummy for under £20, you’d be mad not to try it! Slathering on this Coca Cola smelling cream every morning was an easy add-on to my daily moisturising routine. Rub it in vigorously over the stomach, and dream of a toned, tight, tummy area. Unfortunately the results were disappointing....Smooth skin was achieved but there was little evidence of any toning going on. ALV knew it was too good to be true! alv

Day 1As I approach the FitFarm bus I started to wonder what I had gotten myself in for! The atmosphere on the bus is fairly positive and everyone’s really excited to start the programme, but nervous about what’s ahead. As we played the ‘get to know you games’ I started to realise how serious it all is, there’s a lady that had come all the way from Spain, two girls who had flown in that morning from Bahrain (one of them is here for the third time after losing 4 stone since her first visit). On my way to bed I feel like I’m in for quite a week, but am really happy that I’m going through it with such a great group of women.

Day 2The 7.40am start was not too distressing for me, but the breakfast of bland muesli was slightly more depressing! After breakfast its time for personal consultations our vital statistics are taken so we could do accurate comparisons at the end of the week. I was expecting to be eased in and was given a rude awakening when our instructor tells us to get ready for a 5k run, which was to form the basis of a fitness test. Seeing as I wouldn’t even run for a bus, you can imagine the prospect was less than attractive. Fast-forward 29 minutes and I’ve completed my run and am pretty chuffed! My reward salad and soup for lunch- not so chuffed! Afternoon activities

consist of circuits with weights, resistance training, boxing (where I work so hard I nearly faint), yoga and a dinner of salmon and quinoa. If it weren’t for this fruit crumble for desert I probably would be catching the first train home.

Day 3Up at 6.45 for Wake Up Workout (circuit training) and yes, we did do it before breakfast. I needn’t have thought too much about that as its porridge with apricots to sweeten (I hate apricots!) After a rather questionable breakfast it was time for a six-mile walk/jog we are given nuts and berries to eat at the halfway mark and I start to wonder if there would be some native ‘Peak District’ fruit I could eat. I found the walk really difficult, I’m hungry and tired and in my delirium I start screaming at neighbouring sheep and cows. The afternoon brings aerobics, Pilates, where I find out I have a curved spine and a dinner of beef and celeriac casserole, which is so yummy. After dinner we have a salsa class, everyone got involved and it’s so much fun! Things are definitely looking up.

Day 4They say that some time during the week you hit a wall and today I think I’ve hit mine. I woke up in total pain and agony; I have cramp and just feel like I’m having a meltdown. At Wake Up Workout I feel a shell of my former self and just want to sit in bed and eat a tin of Celebrations. After deciding the world was against me, I am further pushed to my limits by the 6-mile walk along a freezing cycle path. I’m running on sheer adrenaline and a snack of a tasty flapjack! When I get back to the house I have a 37-minute shower to try and normalise myself and soothe my aching limbs. The afternoon brings a brilliant nutrition workshop with nutritional therapist Julia Fitzgerald, it’s extremely informative and really interesting and also I’m happy to be sitting down. The day’s completed with more resistance training, yoga and a dinner of vegetable moussaka it’s so good or I’m so hungry I lick the plate! I also had a well deserved massage, which couldn’t have come at a better time.

Day 5I feel so much better today until I get down to breakfast and see the Bombay eggs that await me, they look horrific but luckily don’t taste too bad! The second half of our nutritional workshop, where we look at ingredients and hidden ‘baddies’ is fascinating who knew that eating a cocoa pops cereal bar was like eating a piece of chocolate cake! >>

How to get this trend >> More resistance training followed by a 2-hour walk to the local swimming pool, where we play water polo, which was brilliant. Dinner is a rather uninteresting chicken and veg ensemble followed by an hour of Pilates and a late desert of yoghurt and honey...I’m hungry so I naughtily eat two of them before bed! I feel no guilt at all.

Day 6This was the day we have all been dreading, the day of the 8-mile walk! After a breakfast of porridge (today I get a bigger portion as I was starving and looking slightly gaunt) we set off for the start of our walk. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life! We get about 1 mile in and the heavens open, the wind is crazy, and it’s treacherous! I’m walking with another FitFarmer called Angela and we are trying to spur each other on. I’m soaked to my very core and am so cold I can’t even feel my fingers enough to get into my backpack for a snack. My socks and shoes are soaking, hail feels like it’s ripping my face off and I really just want to cry my eyes out. At one point we reach a massive hill and I just shake my head and turn to Angela with a look of pure sorrow, she gives me a little square of contraband chocolate and assures me I can do it. I have never been so excited to see a van in all my life! As we approach the end a van is waiting to take us back to the house. I’m freezing and shivering so much I have to be covered with other people’s clothes to make sure I stay alert. After a shower and rest we do a legs, legs, legs class, Areoblast, yoga and an abs workout - no rest for the wicked! I go to bed that day exhausted, but really proud of what I’ve achieved and wonder what else I could do that I thought I couldn’t.

Day 7Today is the last day, I work super hard at Wake Up Workout as it’s statistics tomorrow, I’m so hungry at breakfast I eat my muesli and half of my flapjack snack. It’s time to do the 5k fitness test again to see if we have improved. It’s so much easier and I manage to shave 3 minutes off my time, my recovery is faster and I’m feeling really great. Next on the agenda is Pilates, boxing, weight training and belly dancing which I really loved. We also had a cookery class with the chef, which is really good and teaches us how to make a few of the things we have eaten during the week. The last class of the day is ‘Retrobics’, which is reminiscent of a Jane Fonda workout video and gets everyone in high spirits. We have dinner of Turkey Tikka, which is lovely and make our way to our session on breaking bad habits. Last activity of the day consists of collecting our certificates and goody bags complete with lots of emotional speeches and a glass of champagne (it tasted like heaven!). I went to bed that night so proud of myself and the other women and can’t wait to see the results tomorrow!

After a week at FitFarms I have lost 3lbs, 8% of my body fat, 3.5 inches from my waist, I have super-toned arms and I feel ready to take on the world! If I have inspired you to get fit and fabulous for 2011 you can book your stay at FitFarms by going to www.fitfarms.co.uk alv

Curly Wurlylove curls, but hate the poodle effect? then try a digital perm! Using chemicals to change the structure of the hair isn’t new, but unlike a traditional perm, digital perming uses a refined chemical process along with digitally controlled thermal heating. Electric rollers are individually hooked up to a special unit, which uses infra-red heat to help ‘set’ the curl memory. So whether you’re after giant curls, sexy waves or serious corkscrews the digital perm has it all. Not only that, but it’s great for curly girls too! it can also change your curl type from tight and untameable to loose and lovely.
