Location• Located near the kidney

What does it do• The adrenal gland produces multiple hormones

• Each hormone effects bodily functions such as blood sugar levels and light-headedness

The major hormones• Glucocorticoids

• Mineralocorticoids

• Catecholamines

- Epinephrine

- Norepinephrine

Glucocorticoids• Known as cortisol

• Controls blood glucose levels

Mineralocorticoids• Controls sodium levels in the body

• Prevents you from feeling light-headed

Catecholamines• Epinephrine

• Norepinephrine

• Fight or flight reactions

• Adrenaline and Noradrenaline

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome

• Failure of Adrenal Gland due to bleeding

• Due to bacterial infection

• Shock and acute failure of gland

• Death if untreated

Addison's disease• When adrenal gland under produces

• Can lead to hemorrhaging and hormonal imbalances

• Autoimmune disorder

Fun facts • Derived from latin words for “near Kidneys”, not

adrenaline

• Works with pituitary gland and hypothalamus
