BOOK OF HOURS 1961114 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1960-61 Disgrifiad / Description A late fourteenth century Book of Hours, mainly of Sarum use, from the library of C. W. Dyson Perrins, D.C.L., F.S.A. (1864-1958) (NLW MS 17520A). The volume has associations with the Caernarvon district, and enjoys the distinction of being the only surviving illuminated manuscript which can confidently be located in Wales. This belief is based largely on the appearance in the Kalendar (ff. 5r-10r) of four entries of Welsh interest: Sci. David epi. et conf. dupx. fm. in Wallia (March 1), Dedicacio eccie. S. Beblici epi. et conf. (June 6), Festum S. Beblici epi. et conf. in Caernarvan in northwallia (July 3), and Sci. Danielis bangoriens epi. & conf. (September 11). Llanbeblig, whose dedication is recorded, is the parish church of Caernarvon, and the manuscript may well have been written there for Issabella Godynogh, whose obituary on 23 April 1413 has been entered in the Kalendar in a later hand. The volume comprises 138 leaves, measuring 6.7/8 x 4.3/4 inches and written for the most part (ff. 12r-130v) in a large gothic hand with hair flourishes and an unusual vertical spur under each limb of a letter reaching down to the ruling. The Kalendar is written in a smaller hand, and there are prayers in later hands at the end of the manuscript (ff. 130v-137r), ending with the Litany of the Virgin by St. Bernard. In front of the Kalendar (ff. 1r-4r) there are seven full-page miniatures, and there are also ten pages with illuminated initials and full bar-borders together with other initials in gold and blue. The Annunciation is depicted on the first opening, Gabriel on the left and the Virgin on the right. The archangel is clothed in blue, green, and red plumage, kneeling on one knee to the right, with arms crossed on the left knee, the right hand holding a long palm-leaf, all within an architectural frame painted on gold. The Virgin on the opposite page is seated on a canopied throne with both hands upraised and an open book resting on her lap. On the left hand side of the miniature is a small crucifix placed on a lily growing out of a large silver vase, and on the right hand side a stork in blue. The third miniature represents St. Peter, seated under an architectural canopy, holding in his right hand a silver key and in his left a closed book. On the opposite page, also under an architectural canopy, stands the figure of a king, crowned, holding a sceptre in his left hand, and robed

in green with white cinquefoils and a white tippet, against a red and blue chequered background semee with white cross-crosslets fitchy, and gold lozenges, probably representing the Emperor Maximus, the Macsen Wledig of Welsh legend. The fifth miniature shows a bishop standing with a crozier in his left hand and his right hand raised in benediction. He wears a mitre and a chasuble semee with golden crowns. On the opposite page is the Virgin seated on an elaborately decorated gothic throne, suckling the Child at the right breast, holding his left foot in her left hand. The Child holds a dove in his hands. The seventh miniature represents the Trinity. God the Father is seated on a large gothic throne, his right hand raised in blessing, and his left hand grasping the crucifix placed between his knees. The Holy Ghost is represented by a dove perched on the head of the cross. The binding, though much later than the manuscript, is of considerable interest. The sides of an older binding have been laid down on nineteenth century calf. These sides contain on central compartments, surrounded by a floral roll, the shields of arms of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, one above the other. If, as appears likely, this binding is to be attributed to the period c. 1520-5, it represents one of the earliest examples of English gilt tooling. Nodiadau Restricted Access.
