“ I can’t fault it. If it wasn’t for this course, tutors and everyone involved, I wouldn’t be going to university – no way! Six months ago I was on a building site but now I’m getting ready to go to university, and it’s all because of Wakefield College.”
“Outstanding partnerships benefit students and respond well to local enterprise initiatives in the Wakefield area.”
“I am training as an Adult Apprentice. I’m a full-time worker, but am doing the apprenticeship as well. The Adult Apprenticeships route is a very good route to take. The apprenticeship is getting me skills and qualif ications. If you can actually be in a working environment, you’re gaining all the different types of skills in the workplace.

WelcomeChoosing to take a course at Wakefield College is easy. Whether you’re studying to improve your prospects, to upgrade your qualifications, to help you change your job or simply studying for pleasure, there is a huge array of courses and many different qualifications on offer to you.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a Higher Education course. As well as inspirational teaching, you also expect the right kind of facilities, excellent support, a good record of student success and value for money. Wakefield College offers all these and more.
Our three core values of Employability, Excellence and Affordability combine to make Wakefield College your first choice for Higher Education.
Employability - By focusing on Employability, we ensure that our students leave College fully equipped to enter the world of work and succeed in their chosen fields. How do we achieve this focus? By ensuring that our courses are kept up-to-date and relevant to the skills and knowledge employers really want. Over the years we have built strong links with employers which enable us to tailor our courses to their requirements and allow us to offer our students work placement or project work opportunities which make valuable additions to any CV.
We also ensure that our Higher Education programmes are focused on you and your personal and professional development goals. All our staff, whether academic or support staff, are dedicated to supporting you in the development of the personal and practical skills you need to start your chosen career, or, if you’re already working, to fulfil your potential and progress within your organisation.
Excellence - Our core value of Excellence is endorsed by the results of National Student Surveys and reviews by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).
We pride ourselves on the high quality of our teaching, provided by dedicated professionals who are passionate about their subjects and about teaching. In most cases, our staff are not only professional teachers but also have years of experience in commerce or industry experience which they delight in sharing with their students. Time spent with these tutors is extremely valuable, so we ensure that on all our courses there is as much student-teacher contact time as possible; generally much more than you would have at many universities.
Our facilities also demonstrate our commitment to Excellence. Wakefield College has undergone a transformation in recent years, providing our students with a modern learning environment and first-class facilities.
Whether you are based at our transformed Wakefield City Campus, our purpose-built Castleford Campus or new performing arts centre at the Waterton Building, you will find all the specialist facilities you need to help you succeed.
Affordability - We believe money matters should not stand in the way of educational and career progression. With lower tuition fees than most universities and a local cost of living that won’t break the bank, you may find gaining a Higher Education at Wakefield College surprisingly affordable!
Moreover, because many of our Higher Education courses are validated by major regional universities like Teesside University and the University of Huddersfield, you will receive a recognised and respected qualification, but finish your programme with substantially less debt.
At Wakefield College you can brush up your skills in English and Maths, study for GCSEs, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, HNCs, HNDs, Foundation Degrees, and Honours Degrees. You can sign up for professional qualifications which are awarded by bodies that are leaders in their sectors, or, employment permitting, undertake apprenticeship programmes at different levels.
Wakefield College is an ambitious, forward-thinking institution, with an ongoing programme of investment which will ensure that all its students benefit from excellent facilities, whichever campus they are attending.
In 2009 we opened a brand new campus at Castleford which was purpose-built to serve the needs of our Engineering, Motor Vehicle, Construction and Hair & Beauty students. This development was followed in 2012 by another new-build project, the Harrison Building at the Wakefield City Campus, housing a fabulous three-storey library. Other developments are ongoing at the Wakefield City Campus, with the refurbishment of the Radcliffe Building to include a Higher Education Hub and science labs plus new facilities planned for Sport and Leisure students at Lightwaves.
Last year we also unveiled our new performing arts centre, the Waterton Building, not far from the City Centre Campus. This beautiful building houses
fully-equipped dance and drama studios, spacious rehearsal rooms and specialist workshops for set design and construction, and has the Mechanics’ Theatre, a 160-seat performance venue, at its heart. Popular Music continues to be taught at our Thornes Park Campus and with refurbishment this summer, its lively atmosphere, creative buzz and state-of-the-art studio facilities make this the place to be if you want to make music your career.
Whatever you choose to study and whichever campus you’re based at, you’ll be in good company because thousands of people study at Wakefield College every year. They come from across the Wakefield District and further afield, from different backgrounds and different age groups - our average student is 24 years old and our oldest to date is 85 years young!
Come and join us - we can help you achieve your goals!

“ I spend one day a week in College learning the theory side and four days in my workplace learning practical skills, with the added benefit of getting paid whilst learning. The facilities here
are great and the teaching is interactive. I’m now in my third year which I’m due to finish soon. I will be fully qualif ied then so I can either choose to stay in my current role or get a job elsewhere.”
Pablo Rodriguez-Bozzo CMI Level 7 Strategic Management & Leadership
“ I started studying at Wakefield College with the ILM Level 3 course which helped me to get a promotion a few years ago. Since then I have done the Foundation Degree in Logistics and
Supply Chain Management and a BA (Hons) in Business and Management which have both helped me progress in my career and become a manager. ”

“My self-esteem was not good before I joined Wakefield College. I was conscious that I had not achieved much in the way of academic
qualifications at school. Now, thanks to the amazing support from Wakefield College, my confidence, sense of achievement and pride in my own accomplishments have all greatly increased, and I also hold a teaching qualification which enables me to help young students to make the same sort of progress themselves. ”

Wakefield Children’s University is an exciting and innovative, locally-delivered programme of high quality learning opportunities. And it’s fun! Learning takes place outside school hours at weekends, lunchtimes, after school and in the holidays.
The initiative is all about rewarding participation, raising aspirations and encouraging engagement with learning.
How does it work? Children own a ‘Passport to Learning’ and collect stamps for each hour of participation from validated ‘Learning Destinations’. They are encouraged to collect hours of learning towards nationally recognised awards for 30, 65 and 100 hours which they will be invited to receive at the annual Graduation Ceremony.
Learning Destinations can be anything from after-school clubs, community groups, youth clubs, and other local and national venues such as museums, galleries, wildlife parks, even the Houses of Parliament!
How to get involved? It’s easy to become a member; you can either do this through your children’s school, or if their school is not currently involved with the Wakefield Children’s University, you can get an individual membership.
We aim to make sure that all our learning destinations offer exciting and fun learning experiences. If your child attends a club or group where they are learning something new, tell us and we will try and get it validated so that they can get another stamp in their passport!!
For more information about the Children’s University, where you can get hold of a Passport to Learning and for further information on Learning Destinations email [email protected] or visit www.wakefield.ac.uk/childrensuniversity.
