It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities. Participating in activities that promote mental and physical wellness, offering your wisdom and experience to the next generation, seeking the mentorship of someone with more life experience than you—those are just a few examples of what being engaged can mean. No matter where you are in your life, there is no better time than now to start. We hope you will join in and Engage at Every Age! May HappeningsBlimey! May is full of holidays—May Day, Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and Ramadan! In addition, there is Victoria Day and the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. So, in addition to celebrating our local holidays, we are traveling across the pond to visit England this month.

Our Magpies will be working hard to help us decorate for our big Cinco de Mayo fiesta the first week of May, with several crafts, including Sombreros and Picado Banners. They will also be creating May Day Baskets on Tuesday, May 1st. On Thursday, May 17th, we will be learning a little bit about the Muslim holiday, Ramadan while we create miniature Ramadan Lanterns. And we will be exploring some Victorian era crafts with our Victorian Photo Ornament on Tuesday, May 29th.

The Whippoorwills will be busy with plenty of games this month. Of course our weekly croquet match will continue, but we will add some more British games this month as well. Like Scabby Queen, on Tuesday, May 22nd, and Whist on Tuesday, May 29th. Don’t miss our London scavenger hunt on Thursday, May 17th, or our indoor game of bowling on Monday, May 21st. This month looks to be one of our most active yet!

The Eagles will have much to discuss this month, what with all these holidays and events falling within such close proximity to each other, which should make for some very interesting conversations! First we will discuss the history of May Day on May 1st, then Cinco de Mayo, followed by our discussion on the history of the horse racing in honor of the Kentucky Derby. We’ll learn all about Ramadan on Monday, May 14th and exercise our brains with a friendly game of Jeopardy on Wednesday, May 16th.

Our Hawks group schedule with change a little bit this month, with the first half of the month continuing to meet

on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then switching things up to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the remainder of the month. Nina the Storyteller will be here on Friday the 11th and we’ll be enjoying some classic British comedy (Are You Being Served?), on Tuesday, May 15th. We’ll have an interesting discussion called Feeling Gothic in Cornwall on Thursday, May 24th, and another fun one regarding America’s obsession with the British Royal Family that includes some footage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding on Tuesday, May 29th,

In adition to our usual shenanigans, we’ll be having a festive fiesta to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Friday, May 4th. Bring your sombreros mis amigos, this one promises to be muy caliente! On Tuesday May 22nd, we will be holding our very own Kentucky Derby here at SRC, so don your very best Church Derby Hat and join us for the Race! Most importantly, we will be honoring our Veterans this month in a Pinning Ceremony for Memorial Day. As we are closed on Memorial Day, this ceremony will take place on Friday, May 11th. Fridays, as many of you know, is when our Veteran’s Club meets, so we felt it fitting that we hold this ceremony on a Friday so as many of our Veteran participants could attend as possible. This ceremony is being generously given by All Veteran’s Cremations Services and will begin at 10:30 am. Each Veteran will be honored by acknowledgment, a certificate and a pinning. All of our Veterans are extremely special and deserving of our thanks and respect and we cannot wait to honor them with this very special ceremony!

We are really looking forward to a fun month here at SRC, and hope that you are too! If you would like to make a donation in May, we could really use some black and white photos, mason jar lids, pool noodles, gift bags (used is just fine!), and some fancy Churchill Downs Derby style hats. As always, we are happy to receive any donations and appreciate them all. Happy May from all of us at SRC!

Care Partner Class

This month’s Care Partner Class is on Thursday May 17th From 10am-11:30, with Lori LeMasters. Lori is a great resource to Care Partners, offering them practical tools to manage the stress of caregiving and tips for their self-care. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Nancy at the front desk.

Lori Lemasters is the founder of CarePartnersResource, a free membership site that assists family caregivers with the daily challenges of caring for a loved one. Root, Root, RootFor the Starr Center

Our participants had a great time visiting our sister site The Starr Center for our outing on April 18th. The Starr Center is a day program for younger adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The Starr Center participants prepared a lunch for the two groups to enjoy together and they put on a great karaoke performance that our folks enjoyed!

The Starr Center has begun playing Kickball at Panoramic Park at 10:00 am every Friday through, May 11th. We have enjoyed sitting in the stands and cheering them on as they play their hearts out.
