Instructor: Len May The good news is that people are living longer. But living a long life doesn’t guarantee that it will be a perfectly healthy one; and as baby boomers age, the long-term care crisis in America will worsen. At least 70% of people over age 65 will require long term care services at some point in their lives. A well-thought out plan for addressing the need for care is essential to the physical, emotional, and financial needs of you and your family. Topics to be covered:

• What are the long-term care risks and consequences?

• What are the options? • How do both the traditional long-term

care and the new insurance alternatives work, and which might be appropriate for your situation?

Current research clearly shows that sustained attention is the number one predictor of success in life and work, yet teens’ ability to focus is diminishing due to the attention snatching allure of digital devices and technology. In this talk, Susan outlines the key concepts required to shift teens’ focus from the virtual world of their screens to their real life of school, friends and family. Empowering parents and teens alike, she provides strategies for the healthy use of technology, including awareness of attention, mindfulness, and an intentional use of technology. She helps teens understand why they are so attracted to digital media, how it’s changing their brains, and how to take their power back to learn to focus over an extended period of time.

Getting started with Genealogy

Presented by: NEHGS Director of Education Description: Genealogy is one of the most valuable pursuits you can participate in—learning about who you are, where you come from, and “meeting” the thousands of people who came before you, can be a rewarding and even life-changing experience. But, how do you get started? You may have inherited family papers or research from a relative, have dabbled on a number of websites, or started your research and have already found a few records of interest. What’s next? There are plenty of websites, libraries, and printed sources out there, but access to all that information can leave a beginner feeling overwhelmed.

In this presentation you’ll learn how to navigate the first steps in tracing your family history and gain basic strategies for researching and recording data. Even if you've already been doing research for a few years, you’re sure to learn a new tip or two! System Requirements for Attendees You can easily attend a session from anywhere, anytime using a compatible computer or mobile device! All information needed to join a live webinar is included in your confirmation email sent upon registration. You will receive the same information by email one day and one hour before the presentation.

Offering!

WINE & FOOD PAIRING Taste is perhaps the most subjective of our senses. This is due to the fact that human physiology causes people to interpret tastes in a manner unique to each individual. Add to this the now dizzying array of cuisines and wines that are available and you have a recipe for gourmet disaster. In this one-night class, we’ll examine the concepts of how we taste and how this applies to matching wines with food. This class will include a series of white and red wines, each paired through a food components exercise. Class is limited to 18. NOTE: Attendees must be over 21.

WINES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST Instructor: Paul Malagrifa, Certified Wine Educator When people think about the wines from the west coast of the US, most think California. If that’s all you think about, then you’re missing a lot of really good, high value wine. While Pinot Noir made a name for itself in Oregon, many other varieties have become stars. Washington State was home to some of the finest Merlot-based wines, there again, the number of killer varietals has grown dramatically. At this tasting we will taste several wonderful wines from Oregon and Washington State. Attendees will need to bring their own set of six tasting glasses or you can purchase a set from the instructor for $35. Please let us know if you wish to purchase glasses so that we have enough available. Class is limited to 18. NOTE: Attendees must be over 21. WINES OF AUSTRALIA Instructor: Paul Malagrifa, Certified Wine Educator Australia traces its wine making history back to the early 19th century, although it has really been the last thirty years that have put Australia on the global wine map. Many folks only know Aussie wines because of the cute animal labels that seem to proliferate wine shop shelves today. While many of these wines are fun, accessible quaffers, Australia has much more to offer the thirsty wine enthusiast. At this event we will examine several wines from a number of regions of Australia, focusing on high-quality wines that offer regional distinctiveness and good value. Attendees will need to bring their own set of six tasting glasses or you can purchase a set from the instructor for $35. Please let us know if you wish to purchase glasses so that we have enough available. Class is limited to 18. NOTE: Attendees must be over 21. GUITAR - Beginners - 8 weeks Instructor: Glenn Scott Designed for the total beginner, this course will teach students the basics of popular guitar. The emphasis will be on using simple yet versatile chords and rhythm strums to accompany singing or other instruments. The atmosphere will be informal, and the pace of the class will depend on students' progress. The techniques taught will be applicable to many different styles of music, but students will also be encouraged to request specific songs they would like to learn. There are three absolute requirements: (1) students must provide their own acoustic (non-electric) guitar, (2) they must be willing to cut their nails short on one hand, and (3) they MUST be willing to find practice time during the week. – 8 weeks Instructor: Anna Magee An entry-level introduction to folk fiddling -- concentrating on the basics of producing a pleasing sound and applying it to simple, accessible folk tunes, the kind you might hear at an old-time New England contra dance, or an Irish pub. This class is not about playing the "violin" with its daunting classical repertoire, and rigorous rules, but about the old-fashioned art of making "folk" music for yourself (and with friends). In many corners of the fiddling world, tunes are still taught almost exclusively by ear, but reading music is a valuable skill, which will enable students to explore the great body of written folk tunes out there on their own. This class would incorporate both reading and some ear training. Participants will need their own violins (rentals are recommended). Short nails are required on the left (fingering) hand and recommended on the right. Students will need to make a commitment to some practice time at home. CLASS DATES: Thursdays- February 4th – March 31st [No class 2/18] TIME: 7:00-8:15pm LOCATION: Heights Elementary School, Music Room 101 TUITION: $60

The course will include extensive supervised play of practice deals that employ each concept for a “hands on” learning experience.

Instructor: Chris Flisher The term mandala is drawn from the ancient language of Sanskrit and means "circle" when loosely translated, but a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness; the connectedness of all things, and is a model for the organizational structure of life itself. It is a universal model that reminds us of our relation to the infinite; a world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds. The circle appeals to me on a number of different levels. Whether it is the highs and lows of daily life or the cycles of time and place; in each case the circular form implies a beginning that is at one with the end. The mandala appears in all aspects of life: the celestial circles we call planets as well as conceptual circles of friends, family, and community. Chris Flisher is

ZUMBA – 2 – 8 week Sessions [Updated from printed brochure] Instructor: Lisa Bernard (Mon. & Wed.)

Instructor: Anna McNamara (Tues. & Thurs.)

Dubbed the world’s largest fitness party, the 60-minute heart pumping, dance-loving goodness has an open invite to all. One of the first things you will notice is that students range in dance ability. Whether you can bust a move like Beyonce or were born with two-left feet, the dance floor is an even playing field. As long as you are moving, you’re doing it right. The instructor queues the moves…and if you can’t follow a particular move, that’s okay! Just keep moving to the beat. And…oh that beat. Whether you know the music or not, it’s hard NOT to feel it in your bones. You will most definitely leave with at least one song echoing in your brain, a much-welcomed earworm. Don’t be fooled, however, by all this talk of fun. The Zumba program is most certainly a workout. You will get a good sweat on and leave with an endorphin rush that has you craving more. Depending on how much you exert yourself, expect to burn anywhere between 600-1000 calories!!! CLASS DATES/Times:
