Hort Corner In-Garden news from our Horticultural Team!

What’s happening in the Rose Garden? Peggy Gibbs-Zautke, Horticulturist The rose garden is embarking on a new direction to become a more sustainable garden. Don’t panic! It will still be beautiful and it will also be a healthier environment. We’re transitioning toward growing more disease resistant, winter hardy roses.

Most of us are familiar with these roses: - Will Radlers’ Knock Out® Roses - Carefree series - Bailey Nursery Easy Elegance® series - Kordes Roses (German rose hybridizer, breeding disease resistant roses for many years in Europe)

New roses for 2016 are: - Honey Nectar™ - Look-a-like™ Phloxy Baby - Blushing Knock Out® (bred by Will Radler) - Icecap™ (Radler and Meilland) - Bailey Nursery Easy Elegance® series - Coral Cove - Kasmir - Snowdrift-Sweet Fragrance - Yellow Submarine - Baileys First Editions: Campfire, Above and Beyond™ (climbing rose by David Zlesak)

These new roses will not require a regular spray program for diseases such as black spot.

We’re excited about pursuing this new plan and have an ambitious goal for next year in continuing to plant new roses on the south side of the garden.

Your help/manpower is needed! Come join us in 2017 as we plant our new roses and continually improve our historic garden!
