No formal requirements

• No official requirements for adult teachers - to have teacher training themselves - to have qualifications in adult education

• In practice most of them have traditional teacher education, to teach children in regular school

Non-formal teacher training

•Annual series of seminars for teachers and trainers in adult education and basic skills

•One-day seminars •Free of charge•Has been implemented at Vox since 2007

Non formal teacher training 2013 -

• Seminars in every county in Norway since 2013

• The Ministry has granted 20 million Norwegian kroner (2,5 million Euros) during four years to educate teachers to train adults in basic skills.

• Subjects: Adult education and basic skills

Learning resources - some examples

• Tools for mapping and certification (mathematics, reading and writing, digital competence)

• Literacy profiles and portfolios • InterAct model (Internet-based problem solving

role-plays)• How to plan seminars for adults in basic skills

Formal teacher training

•30 credits (ECT)•Part-time study•Implemented from the autumn of 2009•Are given in cooperation with Norwegian Universities and University Colleges

•Based on description of competence levels

Content

• The students have to choose one of two basic skills for their study:

- Literacy - Digital competence

• The students also study adult learning (integrated part)

Adult learning 1 (5 ECTS)

Teaching reading and writing to adults 1

(10 ECTS)

Teaching numeracy to

adults 1

(10 ECTS)

Teaching digital

competence to adults 1(10 ECTS)

Teaching reading and writing to adults 2

(10 ECTS)

(10 ECTS)

Adult learning 2 (5 ECTS)

•What kind of pedagogical issues related to adult learning may be included in a continuing education for adult teachers in basic skills?

• How do adults learn, compared to children (and youth)?• What is typical for adults in learning situations?• What motivate adults to learn?• Learning in different arenas (formal, non-formal, informal)• Learning at the workplace• Guidance
