“Returning to acting after a long break felt like a big step; by coming to the Conservatoire I have seen a massive change in my confidence and abilities as an actor.”

ACTING 2 STUDENT, DECEMBER 2013

Page 4: Adults, children and young people - RCS

Whether you come to the Conservatoire for a year-long evening class, summer

school or one-day masterclass, you will have access to the same resources,

facilities and teaching staff as our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Our facilitiesAs the nation’s leading educator in performing arts, the Conservatoire’s

facilities include five venues, a comprehensive research library, dozens of

rehearsal rooms, four purpose-built dance studios and a wardrobe department

that rivals the national theatres’.

Short Courses students benefit from the Conservatoire’s facilities; for example,

Pyrotechnics short course students (page 51) work in the New Athenaeum

Theatre, children and adult’s weekly drama students (page 22 and page 37)

perform regularly in the Chandler Studio Theatre and Cinematography

on Location students (page 61) use industry leading RED cameras to shoot

their work.

Our studentsOver 2000 students took part in a short course in 2013/14, with many students

returning to study with us again or moving on to apply for higher education or

new careers as a result of their learning at the Conservatoire.

Students come from all over the world to study here. In 2014 students from

as far afield as Japan and Canada travelled to take part in our summer school

programme.

27 Short Courses students enrolled in degree courses at the Conservatoire in

September 2013.

Our teachers Our staff are not only leading professionals in their field but they’re also

dedicated educationalists with a commitment to passing on their knowledge.

Many of our course leaders are Conservatoire lecturers, successful graduates

or renowned performers in the industry. We are proud to include international

performers in our teaching staff, such as Tommy Smith and Ian Bousfield,

alongside emerging artists like Nic Green, Claire McKenzie and Stephen Mullan.

Performing artsA UNESCO city of music, and heralded in Time magazine as “Europe’s Secret

Capital of Music”, Glasgow is home to most of Scotland’s leading orchestras

and ensembles, world famous music halls such as The Barrowlands and King

Tuts Wah Wah Hut (where Oasis were first discovered) as well as an unrivalled

underground music scene with a plethora of bars and clubs showcasing new

talent on a daily basis. Glasgow’s live music reputation has just been further

enhanced with the opening of The Hydro, a purpose built music venue.

Glasgow also has a rich arts culture with numerous theatres, performing

arts venues and museums all within close reach of the city centre. Glasgow

is a hub for the Scottish film industry and home to BBC Scotland, STV and

countless entertainment, technology and digital companies. In recent years

the city has become a popular destination for Hollywood films and you may

recognise landmarks and street scenes from films such as World War Z, Fast

and the Furious 6 and Under the Skin.

Festivals Spend time in Glasgow and you can easily get caught up in one of the many

international festivals the city hosts. Some cornerstones of the city’s social

calendar include Celtic Connections, Glasgow Film Festival, Aye Write

(Glasgow’s book festival), the West End Festival, the International Comedy

Festival and Bard in the Botanics.

Edinburgh and ScotlandTravel 45 minutes to the east of Glasgow and you will find yourself in

Scotland’s capital and easily most recognisable street, the Royal Mile. From

here you can explore Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish

Parliament. Edinburgh is also bursting with culture and is home to the world’s

largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

From Glasgow you can also escape to scenic Scotland. Within an hour’s drive

of the Conservatoire you can be on the banks of Loch Lomond or climbing

to the summit of one of the country’s famous Munro mountains. From hitting

the slopes in Aviemore to searching for that monster in Loch Ness, Glasgow is

a base to explore all natural Scotland has to offer.

“Glasgow is edgy, modish and

downright ballsy. Its Victorian

architectural legacy is now

swamped with cutting-edge style

bars, world-class venues to tickle

your taste buds, and a hedonistic

club culture that will bring

out your nocturnal instincts…

Glasgow combines urban

mayhem and black humour

and is so friendly, it’s sometimes

downright unnerving.”

LONELY PLANET 2013

The Conservatoire is at the very heart of Glasgow’s city centre. We are a stone’s throw away from some of the country’s finest theatres, music halls, museums and arts centres, with the city’s ‘style mile’ just around the corner from the campus. 06

Eve Kerr | Age: 19 | Hometown: GlasgowCurrent BA Production Technology and Management second year student

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland undergraduate student Eve began her studies in Short Courses. Here Eve tells us how her experience of drama classes helped her to apply for a production degree course.

MY SHORT COURSE

What is your average day like as a full-time student at the Conservatoire?BUSY! You never seem to stop. It also changes from day-to-day.

Some days you will be in the production office researching props

for a show, other days you could be in rehearsals. You could also

be painting chairs or making props. You basically do whatever

needs to be done for the show. That’s what makes it so fun as you

are doing something different nearly every day!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying production? My advice would be to try it and be prepared to work long hours

and give it your all. So if you are interested definitely try a short

course first to find out what area of the production work is the

most interesting to you – stage management, lighting, sound,

set or costume design for example. You will get some amazing

experiences working behind the scenes.

When did you decide to study production full-time?When I was 15. I went to see a show at the Royal Shakespeare

Company and I was completely captivated by the theatre. I then

decided to join Short Courses weekly drama classes and came

every Saturday to learn more about different theatre roles.

What experiences did you gain from drama classes?Coming to Short Courses was the highlight of my week -

without taking part in drama classes I doubt I would ever have

found my way onto the BA Production degree course at the

Royal Conservatoire. The classes offered a lot of opportunities to

do different things like acting, designing, stage management, etc,

so I got a chance to do a bit of everything. This definitely helped

me to realise it was the production side of theatre that I loved.

The classes were just a lot of fun and I got to meet some amazing

people; it is a great way to spend your Saturday.

When did you join Short Courses?I’ve been coming to weekly drama classes with Short Courses

since Primary 6 and I’ve always enjoyed it. I was keen to act from

a young age and I wanted to do it in the best place in Scotland,

where I could really develop my skills.

What elective do you study in your weekly drama class?Currently I study Acting with Text, although previously I’ve done

Musical Theatre. Musical Theatre was brilliant fun and it took

me out of my comfort zone. However, I prefer Acting with Text

because it really challenges us with classical texts and themes.

What do you enjoy most about studying drama at the Conservatoire? One of the best things about doing drama here is the tutors.

I’ve worked with lots of tutors in the seven years I’ve studied

here and they are all really interesting people who share their

experiences and knowledge with us.

The other thing I like about these classes are the students. We

all love drama so it’s really easy to make friends with people

who share common interests. The social aspect of these classes

means I have a group of friends I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

How did drama classes help you prepare for auditions? They helped prepare me for things like improvisation and

movement work; also they helped me prepare mentally for

auditions, so I wouldn’t get nervous. Studying drama has made

me open to new ideas and not afraid to try different roles.

MY SHORT COURSE

How did you break into the film industry? My first big break was when I won a Blue Peter competition when

I was eight – the prize was a part in Dr Who. I was lucky then to

be picked up by an agent and have been working ever since!

My first film was Battleship - with Liam Neeson and Rihanna.

We were flown over to Louisiana for filming - and I even got to

meet Rihanna.

Most recently I’ve been in The Hobbit 2 and 3. For filming I spent

seven months in New Zealand which was just paradise, and I

made some friends for life. It was amazing to work alongside

professionals of the highest calibre such as Martin Freeman,

Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis.

What was it like being part of such a huge film franchise as The Hobbit? It is strange being a part of something so huge - Ian McKellan

follows me on Twitter which is surreal. The best thing about it

was getting to work with Peter Jackson everyday - he’s definitely

the greatest director I’ve ever worked with. It’s also pretty cool to

say I’ve worked alongside Gollum!

What are your aspirations for the future?I just want to keep on working. I’m always looking out for

interesting projects; acting is my passion and it’s what I hope

to do in the future.

abilities and grow in confidence.

Weekly drama students study Core Drama in the morning and,

in the afternoon, students in secondary school have the option

of taking an Elective class.

classes and to meet our tutors and current students.

Core Drama Classes

Every Saturday and Sunday morning

In these classes, you will go on a creative journey with your

peers. Throughout Term 1 you will find inspiration with your new

classmates, from your group discussion.

Term 2 will see you delve into the New Worlds Festival, where you and your class will work with the stimulus to create a new piece

of theatre. You will write, devise, plan and perform the piece in

the final week of term at the New Worlds Festival to other drama

classes and watch how other students have used the stimulus in a

completely different way.

During Term 3 you will be challenged to create an original performance

piece by collaborating with your class and investigating your own

chosen stimulus. The term finishes with a public performance in

one of the Royal Conservatoire’s venues.

You will use the final term of Core Drama classes to explore the

process drama method which should unify your learning over

the year.

When can I start Core Drama classes? You can join these drama classes at any time during the year. Sign

up online to book your place and choose your class.

Do I need any drama experience to join?We cater for all levels and abilities of drama experience. We

welcome beginners into our classes and we are happy to work

with students who are more advanced in their drama skills. We

ask that all students are enthusiastic, willing to have fun and work

with others.

Elective Drama Classes

Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon

After Core Drama classes, students aged 12–17 have the opportunity

to take an Elective class in the afternoon.

During these Elective classes, you work with expert tutors who

have in-depth knowledge about each of the specialisms. You will

also be in classes with students of different age ranges, from S1–S3

and S4–S6, who share the same interest.

The Elective classes culminate in a festival performance in June,

for the annual Clash! Festival, a weekend of new theatre and film

performances.

performance work? Acting with Text allows you to interpret classical

and contemporary texts and perform them in new ways.

Online, distance and blended learning We offer a number of online, distance and blended learning resources and

activities. In 2014/15 we will extend this work further for part-time learners

and teachers by piloting new performing arts training.

The activities will include: audition preparation tutorials, professional

development masterclasses, student support on widening participation

projects, as well as supporting online communities of practice.

These developments are an exciting opportunity to open up our 21st century

Conservatoire to students and professionals from across the country as well

as the world.

The new courses will be available to book from 2015/16 but if you are interested

to learn more about the developments, please contact:

[email protected]

Talks at the ConservatoireLook out for a new area of activity, with an emerging Talks programme

coming soon to the Conservatoire.

The programme will feature talks open to the public from visiting performers,

internationally-respected professionals and our own research and teaching

staff.

The Talks programme will begin in 2015; if you would like to be kept up to

date with the development in the programme, please contact:

[email protected]

Regional hubs and centres for excellenceWe deliver a number of successful classes and projects across the country. This

includes weekly music centres in 10 local authorities, drama weekends and

summer schools for young people and adults, and professional development

events for artists and teachers.

In 2014/15 we will extend this work to set up and support a small number

of regional hubs and centres of excellence in different art forms across the

country. These new centres will support our key objectives to widen access

and participation, identify and develop talent and to support development

for arts and education professionals.

If you are interested to learn more about these developments or would like

to suggest a hub in your area, please contact:

[email protected]

Entry to the Creative IndustriesEntry to the Creative Industries is a programme that supports senior school

pupils to progress to study within the performing and production arts at

college, university or conservatoire level. A wide variety of activity is offered

within the programme which aims to clarify the application, audition and

interview processes and equip students with the skills necessary for further

and higher education.

Students will engage in activities such as:

| Practical, participatory workshops exploring the creative industries

| Days within the Conservatoire practically working with staff and students

| Audition and interview preparation courses

| Theatre and music trips

| Individual mentoring

For more information on how your school can get involved, please contact:
