Let's review your preparedness against disasters! It has been fi ve months since the Great East Japan Earthquake hit in March.

In the disaster-stricken areas the debris still remains and many people stay in the

shelters or temporary houses even now.

A few months ago Morioka International Relations Association held the meetings

and heard about how foreign students here had coped with the March earthquake. They

shared their experiences of the March disaster at Iwate University on May 31st and

Morioka Information Business College, June 1st. Through those meetings, it became

clear that a lot of people had not prepared for disasters such as an earthquake, nor

checked their designated evacuation areas.

To reconfi rm the importance of preparing against natural disasters, personal

preparedness tips (including evacuation areas) are shown here.

■ The types of evacuation sites

 Designated evacuation area

 …accompanying sheet 1, marked by 広

The places that have wide open space, such

as school playgrounds,are designated as

temporary evacuation areas.Usually the areas

are large enough to keep a safe distance

from the cllapsed building.

 Temporary reception center

…accompanying sheet 2

When evacuation periods become prolonged,on

an as-needed basis, the temporary reception

center are set up at the public facilities

such as the school gymnasium. Many people

stay together in the center. Food and

blankets, blankets,etc.are provided

according to damaged conditions.

 Temporary reception center for foreign

residents

Foreign residents with Japanese language

barriers(e.g.unable to understand Japanese,

not having enough confi dence

to speak out in Japanese)are

supported here.Staff members

who speak foreign languages

help the evavuees.

Let's find the location of your closest evacuation area.

■ Temporary reception center for foreign residents ▽ Ueda Public Hall

In Morioka city, there are designated evacuation areas in case of natural disasters.

Please see the list of evacuation areas on the accompanying sheet and be sure to confi rm

your nearest ones (from your house, offi ce or school) in advance of the next crisis. You

are supposed to evacuate to the safer designated facilities by yourselves and stay there

until its safety is confi rmed,in case of natural disasters such as an earthquake or a

fl ood or when you are ordered to evacuate by the city and the fi re station staff.

The experiences of foreign students during

and after the massive March earthquake,

which were shared at the meetings, reveal

some problems in the case of a major

disaster.In response to this fact,Morioka

International Relations Association will

submit proposals to the City of Morioka to

take necessary measures.The Association will

back up foreign residents so that they can

enjoy secure life in Morioka.

Please let us know if you have some

problems concerning Japanese language (e.g.

unable to understand Japanese, not having

enough confi dence to speak out in Japnese)

and need to be assisted in case of

evacuation. We are waiting for you at Gender

and International Communication Division,

City offi ce. English speaking staff is

available.
