Why housing disruption is coming to a housing industry near you

PRESENTED BY: SAM RASHKIN, RETOOLING THE U.S. HOUSING INDUSTRY

Virtually every major industry has experienced, or is in the process of experiencing, massive disruption. Think retail, personal transportation, automobiles, computing, music, photography, media, and the list goes on and on. Housing has been able to sit on the sidelines with its first-cost dominated business model and uniquely disaggregated industry…but not for much longer. That’s because there are five crises making disruption an imperative and four disruptions that will transform an industry totally resistant to change. Will you be ready?

SPONSORED BY ALLIANT ENERGY

The only constant is change—turn up the pace of innovation

PRESENTED BY: JUSTIN WILSON, CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTION

Change can impact our business in many ways, but in most every instance, it can be positive. We will examine Justin’s nearly 30 year journey through the home building industry and discover what changed to improve the energy efficiency, durability, indoor air quality, and comfort of our houses. We are certain that new houses will be constructed to be net zero energy users in the coming years, with a greater attention to building resiliency and multi-generational occupancy. Many of these trends will impact the remodeling industry as well, while our existing housing stock falls further behind the new homes of the future. We know the science and we have the materials and tools to create zero-energy, zero-defect-homes that are nearly cost neutral in the process, the next step is to simply do it.

Join Jay as he discusses how to inspect building envelopes with thermal imaging technology. He will cover validation of structural details, verification of energy performance (conduction and air leakage), location of moisture intrusion, and identification of structural and system degradation of roofs and facades. Jay will provide examples for each application and describe the necessary basic conditions. You will be challenged to solve puzzles based on IR image and case study details.

This session explores the importance of detailing continuity in maintaining the integrity of the four control layers of the building enclosure. Explore methods for identifying areas where continuity can be disrupted and solutions for maintaining control layer continuity. We will conclude with a live demonstration of how to properly tape and detail the seams, penetrations, and windows on an Integrated WRB Panel System.

New building products and systems crop up like sturdy trees and annoying weeds. Sometimes it is not so easy to tell the difference.

Peter has been evaluating building products and systems for more than 30 years. He will lay out a “protocol” for evaluating building materials and then apply that lens to new products and even his Wingnut testing. You will be encouraged to offer insights on new products as well.

The remodeling and building world is finally catching up with modern industry and the importance of understanding and embracing transparency. If you use 1.45 or 1.68 multipliers to determine project cost after COGS, you are doing it wrong. You are using a sloppy methodology to do precision work. You are like a surgeon with a chainsaw. This session teaches you how to radically improve your estimating method, improve your net profit, improve your company’s health, correctly identify area for improvement and growth, and position your company ahead of the competition. Not for the faint of heart or the weak of character.

Passive building highlights the efficiency-first path to a net-zero energy building. Attendees will learn the key performance criteria for PHIUS+ 2018 Certification, understand the development of these targets, and take away the design methodology to achieve this. The session will also cover the capabilities of WUFI Passive, the energy modeling tool used to guide the design and verify compliance with PHIUS+ performance targets.

There are an increasing number of building codes, energy programs, and industry groups calling for whole-house mechanical ventilation systems, yet the subject is seldom given much attention even when required by building code! Do home builders and home owners really understand why systems are required? In many cases, some of the most practical systems can also be some of the most cost-effective, and contribute to better indoor air quality. In this session we will discuss best practices, system design requirements, and look at an updated group of mechanical system options and controls.

Cities and counties across Wisconsin are setting community-wide climate goals—goals to eliminate carbon emissions from all sources by 2050. The goals are relevant to builders because a home built today will still be part of the picture (good or bad) in 2050. This two-part session is an opportunity to learn about the goals and priorities local governments are setting and then, in the second part, to help co-create strategies that work for all stakeholders—builders and contractors as well as local governments and residents. If you’ve ever said “I wish someone had talked to us before they mandated X,” then you should be in this two-part session, helping to shape the future.

NOTE: You cannot receive partial credit for attending the first or last half of an extended session. If you need continuing education credits, you must be present for the entire session in order to receive credits.

Our nation’s housing stock is in peril as homeowners are increasingly challenged financially to maintain and upgrade their homes. Upgrades are badly needed as our housing stock average age approaches 40 years. However, deep energy retrofits are not for the faint of heart. There are plenty of minefields along the way that can undermine goals for improved efficiency, durability, comfort, health and safety. This session will identify the risks and technical challenges of deep energy retrofit strategies.

Over 40% of Midwest homes use delivered fuels or electricity as their primary space heating fuel. Cold-climate air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are an ideal candidate for these homes, however, installations have been slow due to lack of familiarity with this technology. This presentation will share research findings from the Minnesota Energy Efficiency Potential Study including detailed data monitoring of ASHP installed in Minnesota homes.

Healthy homes and home performance: making the homeowner connection

LOCATION: PORTIAPRESENTED BY: PETER TROAST, ENERGY CIRCLECREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU, ASHI 1 CEC, BPI 1.25 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEU, PHIUS CPHC, RESNET

One of the greatest challenges the home performance industry faces is how to connect consumer demand for healthy homes with private market opportunities for home performance improvement. The demand for and awareness of healthy homes continues to grow, but few homeowners connect health issues with the systems that make up their home. Peter Troast will explain the trajectory of the healthy homes movement within home performance, and consumer trends supported by first-party statistics and market intelligence. He will unpack how contractors can bridge this communication gap with homeowners, and the foundations of a healthier home business and marketing strategy. This presentation will also offer contractors the opportunity to ask questions and receive industry and situationally-specific perspective and feedback regarding their communications challenges.

Efficiency gains on both gas and electrical consumption can be achieved when installing multi-stage furnaces that meet new federal furnace-fan efficiency standards. A multi-stage furnace operates much the same way as a single stage furnace, except that the amount of heat it provides is not always at the higher design rate for the coldest day of the year. Fan efficiency is gained by replacing traditional PSC motors with one of two types of ECM motors: constant airflow or constant torque.
