BACKGROUNDLevel One (1) Community Coach Certifi cate (Swimming) is part of
the Advanced Coaching Pathways aimed to assist coaches in the
development of sport-specifi c training programs. Program graduates
will have the skills and knowledge required to deliver basic training
sessions that develop the swimming techniques for novice swimmers
(10 years and under). The graduate coaches will have the ability to work
independently with the novice athletes and will be encouraged to fi nd
a mentor coach or work as an assistant coach to gain experience
working with older athletes.
COURSE OVERVIEWThis course provides the essential knowledge of coaching general
principles to support work activities. It is particularly relevant for those
wishing to operate as a community coach.
COURSE CONTENTSThis hands-on course includes the following topics:
• Develop and update knowledge of coaching practices
• Ethical responsibilities of a coach
• Coaching styles and practices applicable to a range of ages and
learning abilities
• Perceptual motor skills required to play a selected sport
• Physical, psychological and social characteristics of children
and related stages for learning and coaching activities to enable
the development of appropriate program
• Coach beginner or novice participants to develop fundamental
motor skills
• Communicate e� ectively with others in a sport environment
The Swimming program includes:
• Fitness and training programs
• E� cient stroke development
• How to produce a plan for the swimming sessions
• How to organise participants into manageable groups for drills,
activities and games
• First aid and emergency response skills
• Teaching and coaching techniques and practices applicable to
a range of ages and learning abilities to enable appropriate and
e� ective conduct of sessions
• Characteristics of a range of physical abilities, fi tness and motor
performance to enable assessment of participant readiness
• Competitive strokes, starts, turns and fi nishes and specifi c drills,
activities and games that promote progressive skill acquisition in
individuals and group
• Communication systems used between participants, coaches,
referees and support sta� during swimming sessions.

ASSESSMENT METHODSCompetency based assessment is used during all assessment activities.
Competency is achieved through demonstrating your knowledge and
practical application of skills. The “assessment activities” will include
but not limited to such things as written/ oral questions, third party
feedback where applicable, activities, and scenarios of knowledge and
practical application of skills.
COURSE DURATION The practical delivery for the Certifi cate in Advanced Coaching
Pathways Level One (Community Coach) is 1 week (6 days). Coaches
will require access to novice athletes from 6 - 8 am and 4 - 6 pm over
the duration of the program.
