This video quite simplistic based on the technical and visual codes. For instance, most of the video is mainly set in one location with a series of shots to illustrate where they are. For instance, they use many wide angle establishing shots to show the vast oceans and attractions around them. This is paired with rhythmical editing at the beginning as for each beat there is a new shot introduced. As the song itself is very melodic and slow the camera work is rather naturalistic and very rhythmical as mentioned and is mainly quite slow. The mise-en-scene in the song is quite bright at the beginning as the music is quite happy as the notes played are played quite staccato so in a way they lift the mood that otherwise is not sensed in the actual video yet the connotation of the music would be that of a happy one. The depth of focus in one scene alters for each person. When there is a close up on the male the female (Coeur De Pirate) is slightly blurred this may connote his slight separation and distance from her as later you see him leave her yet he does come back. The mise-en-scene around them is one of a romantic setting as they are sitting by the river which usually connotes romance and love however in this case it is as if they abandon the connotation and go against it making it seem as a break-up to the naked eye. In another scene, the depth of focus is the same he is in the fore-ground and everything behind him is bright and colourful.

Textual Analysis: Coeur de Pirate

Francis

Page 6: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

This may connote that hey feels alone in a world that seems so happy when he is so sad. In the video during the instrumental section there are fireworks going off which connote new beginnings to some this connotation is re-visited in the plot as at the end he is with her again. The narrative represented in the song is one of Prop's. Although it does not feature all the 8 characters that he mentions it features the damsel in distress and the hero. However the gender roles are swapped, the female in the song could be seen as the hero saving the male from his sadness as you can see how depressed he is throughout the video until he is reunited with the with the female at then end.

Textual analysisCoeur De Pirate(Francis) Album Cover

This album cover is very simplistic as the video yet it captures the essence of the artist and the genre of music she represents.

The mise-en-scene around her seems to connote emptiness as it looks as if she is sitting in an abandoned area as the walls are deteriorating behind her.

The main focus and primary image of the album cover is the artist as she takes up 2/3 of the camera.

The typography of the album is rather simplistic and not very bold yet is the secondary image of the album cover.

The video begins with a close up of the artist and his guitar connoting that the main focus of the song is him and his guitar. This is emphasised by the fact the song is mainly acoustic. An over the shoulder shot is used to establish the environment to which he is playing the song and the variety of females around him. At a glance you would draw the conclusion that he is with the woman who is first seen yet that conclusion is blown out of the water when she slaps him. For each women they use a close-up in order to harness each women’s characteristic. For instance the second women we see in the song has a very cheeky smile on her face as if she automatically thinks she can win his affections. There is always bright lights behind the women this may be to connote that they are heavenly even though their behaviour may contradict that connotation. The video mainly focuses on the singer and his guitar as the camera is mostly fixated on him and the guitar, also throughout the video it is suggested that the object of his affection is his guitar as whenever a women approaches him they use an over the shoulder shot to illustrate their frustration when he does not pay attention to them. The colours used are very neutral which compliment the song as it is rather melodic and soothing so the mise-en-scene used is a good connotation for the song. The editing like the first is very rhythmically based. There are a variety of shots used in this music video however most are mainly focused on the artist himself and consist of close ups and mid shots to show him and his guitar.

. They tend to use extreme close ups at prominent moments in the song to highlight certain words and actions for instance when he sings the words “Sans règles dignes et sans foi” which means “Without worthy and faithless rules” this may be a point he is trying to stress in the song which could be the reason why the close up is used. This could also be the case when he says “Moi blotti contre toi” which means “Me snuggles against you”. The is a lot of movement in this video this could illustrate the happy atmosphere created through the song. The narrative this may be one focusing on the enigma factor as the audience would be thinking why does he not respond the affection of all the women in the scene, yet his full concentration is focused on his guitar until the end when he is splashed

Textual AnalysisGuillaume Grand (Toi et moi) Album Cover

This album cover gives the connotation of a upmarket event for instance a ball or small gathering due to the mise-en-scene of the draped gold sheets in the background. This also gives the album a luxurious ambience.

Guillaume Grand is also the main focus and primary image in his album cover.

There is a women in the foreground who some may link to the album name however she is slightly blurred therefore expressing his importance.

Background Information:. Her first album ’Sur mes Gardes’ became Gold disc in May 2010 only five months after its release. Less than a year after the album was certified platinum. January 23, 2011, she received the NRJ Music Awards of the French revelation of the year.

The song entitles a different theme from the what the title suggests the song is about. The way to which the video is shot does not depict “I don’t need you” yet “I’m alone and I do need you”. This conclusion is brought about by the way in which the video is shot and the mise-en-scene used. During the opening verse and chorus she is standing alone in the rain. The mise-en-scene here is attached to the connotation that she is unhappy and alone. This connotation is later emphasised when the camera fades out and you see that she outside alone whilst inside it seems as if everyone inside is happy and having fun whilst she is sad and lonely outside. The editing used is very rhythmical also, as it creates a slow and mellow atmosphere through it. They use a lot of close-ups and extreme close-ups in this song to harness the emotions felt by the singer. This song is mainly about the singer and not the plot so much which gives added reason to have close-ups and a select few of them. In regards to our promotional music video we may chose to utilise some elements of the camera work for instance, the close-ups as the songs are quite similar based on the plots. The narrative to this song could be the fact that she wants to have what she had before with a certain man, the relationship she wants is represented in the couple inside the room. The room could be a personification of her thoughts. In the video she promotes her album by having her album cover put onto a fridge to seem as a magnet.

Album cover clearly made into a fridge magnet subliminal and also a form of product placement as her fans will go out to purchase this Album.

Textual AnalysisJoyce Jonathan (Sur mes Gardes) Album Cover

This album cover focuses mainly on the artist and the background is out of depth so the whole frame focus is on her. She is the most important element of the album.

Even the typography of her name and the album title is smaller in comparison to her picture.

The colour of her font in regards to her name is a very feminine pink which could connote that the album is essentially for the women and the elements of her songs will be for a female audience.

Analysis of DigiPak

The cover itself presents an ideology that teenagers constantly have there heads in the clouds which is a connotation brought forward by the artist as she has placed herself within the clouds.

The candy cane effect is one that is used throughout the DigiPak. This would be used as an iconic image represented with the artist as it is a reoccurring theme throughout it.

The fact that she is lying provocatively with layers of ‘cloud’ wrapped around her may bring about the connation of lust and passion to be included in the album. We want what we cant have, or we shouldn’t have too much of a good thing.

Page 19: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Analysis of Magazine Advertisement

The background is anecdotal to the overall theme of the album as you can see the young lad laying on the ground with a book on his head. At first glance you would identify this cartoon lad as a teenage boy in his room unable to focus on his studies for instance. This could also be amplified by the fact the room is a mess which is stereotypically linked to young adults.

Emphasis on the artist name and not so much the album title or the information on the release of the album.

When compared to what we expect to put into our magazine advertisement, I would want there to be more emphasis on the artist as they are the main attraction when compared to the background or the artist name. Just the image of the artist is enough in my opinion to draw in an audience which is a fan of the artist.

The image perspective makes it look like we are looking into this ‘boys’ room. This connotes the album in some ways as through the songs we gain insight into Mika’s world and mind.

Key Changes: 80s French pop album coversJean Jacques Goldman

This album looks as if it was influenced by the work of Andy Warhol as the way it is formatted is very iconic of his work.

The concept is very basic and is mainly focused on the artist. All the images are very minimalistic and are just of the artist in slightly different poses.

The mise-en-scene creates a very happy atmosphere due to the colours used like yellow which could connote that the album is very bight and cheery.

The artists name isn’t the central focus yet his face is enough it seems to draw in an audience showing that the actual artist image is more important in attracting a buyer.

This album covers is also very simplistic and as the others the primary image is the artist and like Carla Bruni with the instrument he is mostly associated with.

The mise-en-scene of the album cover is very dark which connotes the dark nature of the album or emotion felt in the album. This sense emotion also comes across through the way the artist is positioned. He is sitting on a chair clearly tipped to the side his hand to his mouth as if placed in a stressful/emotional situation which could be connoted throughout the lyrics in the songs.

In this cover as well the main focus is on the artist itself , however compared to Jean-Jacques Goldman's album cover there is more focus on his name as they made it lighter in colour compared to the background which is very dark. As this is a reoccurring theme in Pop Albums this is something I could use on my own product.

The mise-en-scene of the album gives a dark and gloomy atmosphere which connotes the album may be full of emotional songs. The way to which she is positioned is very seductive and would attract a male/female audience. The direct eye contact also brings about this conclusion.

Once again this album cover focuses on the artist and also the instrument she is mostly associated with.

Throughout the years it is noticeable that used photography and the effects used have not only improved but have become more advanced as technology has advanced.

The typography used is still very simplistic in all era’s and the main focus is still not mainly on the artists name.

Certification for product

Our product would be certified as a 12 as the themes in the music video are for those of a mature mindset as we deal

with issues surrounding love and relationships which culturally is

explored after the age of 12. Also, the mood represented in the video is one of a dark nature which could prove rather upsetting for those under the age of 12. Through research I have found that 12 year olds are more likely to view music videos and socially interact on the basis

of what they have viewed and I think the nature of the music video is one

that is appropriate for that age group unlike some music videos aired on

television.

What is your gender?

We chose to use more females when partake in the questionnaires as we value their opinion more as our target audience is mainly females aged from about 16 onwards.

We came to that conclusion as through research it suggests that mostly women listen to pop music.

Also, as our artist is female we would want our audience to be able to identify themselves through her whether that be via personality, looks or the topics related through the song.

What is your age?

Based on the results we mainly took results from those who were amongst the 16-20 age bracket as they are our target audience. However, as mentioned we do value those above that age bracket as they to make up our target audience however, those in the 16-20 age bracket are more likely to go out and buy CD’s and watch music videos as most television corporations that play music videos on a daily basis like: VH1 and MTV are based on the daily views of teenagers and young adults.

What genre of music do your prefer?

Based on our results only a small percentage on our participants preferred Pop music which is the genre of our promotional song and the genre that was widely adored was Indie.

These views may be based on the current indie trend that has been sweeping the nation. This is highly influenced by fashion and therefore may have slightly aided the results.

However, the pop genre was still popular but the stereotypical representation may have caused people to vote for other genre’s as some have suggested. Pop Rock RnB Indie Folk Other

What is the most important element of a music video in your opinion?

Based on the results we know that our audience believe that the most important element of a music video is the characters/singers therefore in our production we will make sure we honour this and make the singer the centre of the attention in the video. In second place was the plot. In our music video we will make sure to intertwine both the demand for the singer and a plot that can be easily identified.

Are you familiar with French music?

Based on the results the majority if our participants were not familiar with French music however some were familiar with it.

To be doing a French song may mean that we will only be appealing to a majority of those who are familiar with it.

However, this could be influenced by the factor that French music isn’t played or featured in charts or music stores like HMV for example whereas American artists and English artists are widely heard which is contrasting to other countries as in French charts American and English artists are included.

Would you want subtitles included in the video?

Our results show that our audience would like subtitles to be added to the music video. However, this is not conventionally seen in music videos and may cause some disturbance to the actual plot and substance of the music video.

For this result I would go for the one that did not draw that much attention as subtitles would be too distracting therefore I personally would not add them in. Yes No

Title: Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore

Type of media product: Promotional music video

Time: 4.06

Target audience: Mainly females age 16+, this is because it is more likely they will understand the song and the song and video is from a woman’s point of view therefore they feel they can relate to the story.

Page 43: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

SynopsisBeginning: After falling in love with whom she believes is her perfect man, she feels she would do anything to keep him. When she deserts him she does not know what to do and ends up walking the streets finding remorse by discarding his memory.Beginning: 1st Verse and ChorusLocation – E20 studio – Situated in a dark room with floor lights circled around the microphone stand and a single spotlight on the ceiling facing down onto the microphone stand. The artist walks into shot and she begins to sing the song into the mic. The main focus at this point is the artist and her voice. The scene is empowering her before the audience fully grasps what the narrative of the song is.

Page 44: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Middle: 2nd VerseThis is the scene where Amelie is waiting for Jean Jacque in a coffee shop. Various close ups, mid/wide/long shots are used to show Amelie’s frustration and impatience. A close up of her phone is used for the part of the scene where she phones Jean Jacques to find he does not answer. Extras walk around the café and cross dissolves are used to show that as time passes he still has not turned up. Amelie then gathers her belongings and leaves, the weather for this scene is rain which works well with the mood of the scene.Middle: 2nd ChorusThis scene is showing Amelie reading a sad ‘break up’ letter handwritten by Jean Jacques which was sent to her from him after he did not show at the coffee. This starts with a close up of the letter being opened, then slowly tracks out into an over the shoulder shot of her reading the letter. To break up this scene the shots from E20 are intercut into this.

Page 45: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Ending: 3rd Chorus: Lake SceneLocation – Boxers LakeThis is our last scene where Amelie is walking by the lake reading the letter, her facial expressions and body will connote sadness. The scene starts with mid/long shots of Amelie singing the song, scenes of her walking reading the letter and some shots of the lake are intercut with this, Long/wide shots are used and establishing shots are used to show the scenery. Close ups of swans are used as they connote beauty and peace. A low angle shot is used when Amelie screws up the letter and throws it by the lake, she then walks off into the distance (wide establishing shot used). After the songs fades, a high angle shot of her in the E20 scene is used, Amelie walks off set out of the circle of lights. Fade out is used to end the song.

Page 46: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Proposal: Ancillary Tasks

(magazine advertisement)

We have based our magazine on the target audience of our chosen artist. The song we believe that we will be promoting is targeted towards those of the female gender mostly and from the age of 16 onwards. However, if it were possible to base a magazine fixed on both genders it would be reaching a wider range of individuals.Through market research we have found that in general more females read magazines more often with most already having established favourite magazines and those in the age range we chose for our target market buys more CDs.The article itself will aim to establish the artist and create a new media hype for the promotional video and the CD itself. The magazine will be quite basic itself to create a sense of identification for the readers for instance the way to which everything is presented has to be representative of those around the artist and representative of what the target audience is presented with on a daily basis. The main focus of the advertisement in terms of imagery will be the artist herself so that her image is correctly established, however the prominent secondary image will be of the album cover so that to is established.

Page 47: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Proposal: Ancillary Task (CD cover)

We have already established a target audience and it is one that is most likely to be buying CDs whether that be through online sales or buying them from the shops itself. We aim to make the CD cover quite artistic yet fully focused on the artist and the imagery and connotation behind the album itself whether it be a connotation of love and affection or hate that is brought from the cover. Through any connation that is brought out it will still create a sense if identification to the target audience. We will advertise the CD in stores such as HMV, ASDA, online stores such as Play.com, iTunes because these are regarded as the most popular places to buy music.

All equipment should be charged and ready, as we will be filming in an area outside of the school grounds.Make sure all equipment is accounted for and looked after. We have to make sure that there are no surrounding hazards to Amelie as she walks down by the lake so we will have to choose a filming time where there will be less people around.

Recces : Boxers Lake

Boxers Lake is a suitable location for our music video as it provides good scenery for thatsection of the music video as the use of natural light gives the impression of a happier more relaxed atmosphere. The scene depicts Amelie walking by the lake by herself with a more positive attitude to connote her freedom. The audience could identify themselves with the artist as the setting is one that would be evident in their everyday life as there will be background people going about their day making the scene more realistic.

Page 70: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

The Cookie is ideal for the scene with Jean-Jacques and Joyce as the coffee shop is an ideal size and the tables are situated in the perfect place. The audience could identify themselves with the artist as the setting is one that would be evident in their everyday life as there will be extras entering and exiting the coffee shop to make the scene more realistic. When filming we need to be careful of hazards that may arise in the chosen location. All hot drinks must not be placed near any of the electrical equipment as it will be damaged. Any loose wires must cleared up as they are a trip hazard which could also lead to damage of equipment and the filming location.

Recces: The Cookie

Page 71: Advanced Portfolio Joyce Nkela

Recces: E20 Studio

E20 is a nice location to film as the room is very big and has a variety of lights we can use to create effects. We decided to use this room because we could get it really dark so that the lighting that we were going to use have more effect and are brighter. The audience should be able to establish the room as a recording studio therefore identify with the artists love and passion for music. However, there are some hazards that need to be recognized. The room itself is filled with plugs therefore if anything is plugged in any loose wires should be taken account for because it could cause someone to trip and could damage the equipment. Another, would be liquids in the room as if spilled could cause a hazard as someone could slip, also if on the equipment for example the camera it would damage it.

Image For CD Cover (Front)

This image was chosen because the artists eyes are focused on the camera therefore suggesting contact with the audience, in addition she is smiling with her eyes indicating that she is content. Her expression is inviting and alluring which is tempting for the audience. The background is plain therefore the main focus is the artist and the first image the audience see, this is also emphasized by the fact that the artist is in a central position.

Image for CD Cover (Back)

We have chosen this image because the image shows how deep in thought the artist is in, also the direction to which she is looking is directly where the track listing may be. Once again the iconic pose is present.
