Preface
Experimental and numerical investigation of materials and structures is nowadaysan important discipline which enables a better and more reliable application ofengineering components. Furthermore, limits of materials and structure can beaccurately determined which may influence the design process and result, forexample, in much lighter structures than a few decades ago. A lot of theseadvancements are connected with the increased computer power (hardware) andthe development of well-engineered computer software. This directly influencesthe capability to bring novel advanced materials and structures to application. Onlyif the performance of new materials and structures can be sufficiently predicted andguaranteed, they will find their way in industrial applications.
The 6th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering andExperimenting, ACE-X 2012, was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 1–4 July, 2012with a strong focus on computational-based and supported engineering. Thisconference served as an excellent platform for the engineering community to meetwith each other and to exchange the latest ideas. This volume contains 19 revisedand extended research articles written by experienced researchers participating inthe conference. The book will offer the state-of-the-art of tremendous advances inmechanical, materials, and civil engineering, ranging from composite materials,application of nanostructures up to automotive industry and examples taken fromoil industry. Well-known experts present their research on damage and fracture ofmaterial and structures, materials modeling and evaluation up to image processing,and visualization for advanced analyses and evaluation.
The organizers and editors wish to thank all the authors for their participationand cooperation which made this volume possible. Finally, we would like to thankthe team of Springer-Verlag, especially Dr. Christoph Baumann, for the excellentcooperation during the preparation of this volume.
