6. Further information

7. Summary

3

1. Introduction

• Advanced Design System (ADS)

• Manufacturer Agilent Technologies (formerly Hewlett-Packard)

• Very wide graphical simulation environment

– Manual set covers approx. 19 000 pages (version ADS2006c)

• Is developed through the combination of several earlier simulation softwares

4

1. Introduction (2)

• Enables the simulation of the entire signal path from input bits to output bits

5

1. Introduction (3)

• Modelling and simulation is possible at several levels:

– System level

– Circuit level

– Layout modelling

– Planar electromagnetic simulation (Momentum)

Advanced Design System - Complete Product List

6

1. Introduction (4)

• Modular

product

structure

7

1. Introduction (5)

• Different combinations of products available

8

1. Introduction (6)• Core is

included

in each

bundle

9

1. Introduction (7)

• Additional capabilities can be achieved through a number of optional available elements

10

1. Introduction (8)

• List of elements continued

11

1. Introduction (9)

• ADS includes several expansions and functionaries for easier operation:

– Design Guides available in elements• ready-made simulation environments

– For instance for simulation of amplifiers, filters, mixers, oscillators, Bluetooth systems, radar applications, PLLs, UWB systems, WLAN systems, cdma2000 systems etc.

– Design Kits• User’s or vendor’s own simulation templates

– Design Libraries available in elements• A number of high level system specific components

– WLAN, CDMA2000, GSM, EDGE etc.

– A great variety of example projects– A number of half ready test bench templates– Smart Simulation Wizard (RF-environment)

12

1. Introduction (10)

• The latest launched version is ADS2009 Update 1

– PC, unix and Linux versions available from the manufacturer

– Starts in the workstations of the Department of the Electrical and Information Engineering of the University of Oulu by the command “hpads”

– Unix and Linux versions lack the ability to connect to the “outside world” (Connection manager)

13

2. Structure

• ADS can be divided roughly into– DSP environment

(Ptolemy)

– RF environment

• Co-simulations are

possible between

different levels– A typical co-simulation

between DSP and RF environments

14

2. Structure (2)

• Simulation models

can be designed to

have a hierarchical

structure

15

2. Structure (3)

16

3. Simulations

• Simulations are performed in

– Time domain and/or

– Frequency domain and/or

– Numerical domain and/or

– Physical domain

17

3. Simulations (2)

• Simulations are controlled by different simulation controllers

– different controllers to different simulations

18

4. Environment

• Enables co-operation with other simulation softwaresas well as with signal generators and measurement tools

• For instance some mathematical algorithm that exists as a Matlabfunction can be implemented there. There is no need to redo it in ADS.

19

4. Environment (2)

20

5. Example windows of the ADS

• Main window

in ADS

21

5. Example windows of the ADS (2)

• Schematic

window

in RF

environment

22

5. Example windows of the ADS (3)

• Data window for

the simulation

results of the

previous schematic

23

5. Example windows of the ADS (4)

• Window for layout design

7. Summary

• ADS is a tool for automatizing the working phases of highfrequency (RF) electronic design

• Combines a large number different simulation and design environments enabling the entire design of differentapplications from the beginning to the end

• Simulation and development levels

– System level (modulation, coding, channel…)– RF level (components, circuits, circuit layout and implementation…)

27

7. Summary (2)

• ADS enables the input and output of simulation data to different simulation and calculation tools and measurementtools

• ADS is used for instance in the following courses

– 521317S Wireless communications III– 52335S Radio Engineering I– 521375S Radio Engineering II
