The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was established in the year
1948, soon after the second International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering
held at Rotterdam. The Society was affiliated to the International Society in the same year and since then
it has strived to fulfil and promote the objectives of the International Society. In December 1970, the
name, Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was adopted. In January 1994, it hosted XIII International
Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. Various Local Chapters of the IGS
organise annual conferences of the Society regularly.
IGS Delhi Chapter has been given the honour to host the Indian Geotechnical Conference – 2012 which
is being jointly organised with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
The theme of the present Conference is “Advances in Geotechnical Engineering”. The conference is
focussing on the advances in geotechnical engineering taking place to meet the challenges faced in
infrastructure development. The sub-themes of the conference are:

Developments in Dealing with Difficult Ground Conditions and Geotechnical Structures
New Techniques in Instrumentation and Monitoring
Trends in Tunnelling and Underground Structures
Innovative Design and Construction of Foundations
New Developments in Computational Geomechanics

Practice of Risk Assessment and Disaster Reduction
Experience of Forensic Investigation and Rehabilitation
New Concepts in Professional Practices and Geotechnical Education
This conference aims to evoke excellent response from academicians, engineers, researchers, and
professionals to address the ever increasing complex questions pertaining to Geotechnical
Engineering. Geotechnical experts from all over the country and abroad responded to the opportunity
and challenges and submitted a record number of 445 abstracts covering 11 different sub-themes. After
different stages of scrutiny and review, 274 papers were accepted and published in this proceedings.
The Organising Committee has also invited 15 renowned personalities from India and abroad, to deliver
keynote lectures during the Conference.
IGC-2012 provides an excellent platform for interaction among experts from industries, consultancy
organisations, construction companies, government agencies, suppliers, academic and research
institutions and decision makers.
The Organizing Committee is very much indebted to the keynote speakers and the authors of all
technical papers which are included in this proceedings. We hope the contributions contained in the
proceedings will be a useful and refreshing source of reference to all those in the field of Geotechnical
and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
