workshop(s) with individualized coaching and feedback during
training exercises Small group skill practice/coaching sessions
Individual coaching sessions using discussion and role-play or
real-play (face-to-face or telephonic) Follow up individual
coaching sessions using audiotape samples of MI work with

Preparing the Learner for the Session Communicate Length of
tape or MI segment desired What you are looking for (MI spirit and
core skills) Clear target & reasons to guide in the direction
of change (avoid neutral/equipoise situations) How to use the
technologydigital tapes work best with hands-on demo around use of
recorder and uploading to computer Not a test done in the spirit of
support and learning. The messier the MI, the more you learn!

What do you hear? Listening for Strengths and Potential
Coaching Points
Slide 12
Audiotape Coaching ProcessOne way to do it: Before meeting the
learner, code the tape (if using a coding instrument); note
strengths and potential coaching points. If first session, go over
what the two of you will be listening for (i.e., spirit,
direction/guiding, OARS, change talk, flow, etc.). Ask them to ID
the target behavior and evoke learners perceptions of strengths. If
not first tape, review goals from last session and evoke
progress/thoughts.
Slide 13
Coaching Process (cont): Explain that you will listen together
and either party may stop the tape periodically to discuss. While
listening, be sure and reinforce/affirm the strengths and look for
learning opportunities to use E-P-E for discovery and practice.
Before ending the session, ask the learner to set 1-3 goals for
further practice. Schedule next tape.
