Dear Bethel Members and Friends:

It happened on a freeway outside of Appleton, WI. Our family was returning from Door County to Rochester in two vehicles. A woman driving a silver sedan forced her way into the space between our two cars. She was following me so closely, my daughter wanted to alert me that there was a crazy driver on the road. When there was a small space, she moved to the right lane and buzzed by me, cutting me off as she turned in front of me in the left lane.

Her next move was disastrous. She hadn’t begun to clear the small sedan on our right before she slammed back into that lane so she could pass the car in front of both of us. It happened so fast. The silver sedan crashed into the smaller car and forced it off the road; then it took off like a shot and was gone. By the time I looked back, many cars were stopping to assist the car off the road which had remained upright. Broad daylight. A summer’s day. Crash. Someone who cared little or nothing for others.

A Word FromPastor Norman Wahl

How different is the season we celebrate around God’s giving of a Son to the world. Instead of a busy freeway, it is likely a hillside with little activity. Instead of high noon, it is dark. Instead of the sounds of a crash, there are sounds of angel voices.

Instead of disregard or even contempt for others, there is a God who regards the world with love and care for all. This God doesn’t speed away; instead this God comes to dwell among us.

“Silent night, holy night, all is calm…”

May you be blessed by the peacefulness and joy of a Son who has come…for you.

In the Grace of Christ, Pastor Norman Wahl

Here’s how you can do it: Those interested in membership and seeking more information about Bethel’s mission and ministries should plan to attend our next New Member Orientation 101 class on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in room 115. Attendance is required by all who wish to become members of Bethel. This is a fun, informal time where you get to learn more about Bethel and meet others who also wish to join.

This three night session is for those individuals seeking more information about the Lutheran Church and provides a chance to meet the pastors. If you have been confirmed in the Lutheran Church, it is not necessary you attend these classes; however, you are highly encouraged to do so. The weekend of January 27 and 28, 2018 will be the Reception of New Members at Bethel Lutheran Church.

Sunday Morning Education Forum10:30 a.m., Room 115

Bethel commits itself to offering a vital education program for adults. We believe that God’s Word is active and alive, and we desire that more people would come to know Jesus in a deeper way through our programming with Sunday Morning Adult Education Forum. In addition to having featured speakers, we are following a DVD series this year that continues Professor Phillip Cary’s talks on “Luther: Gospel, Law, and Reformation.” Phillip Cary is a philosophy professor at Eastern University with a concentration on Augustine of Hippo. He received his Ph.D. from Yale Divinity School. He has written a number of books, including three published by Oxford University Press. In addition, he has lectured on the history of Christian theology and on major figures in ecclesiastical history.

We invite members and visitors to consider attending any of the following regular offerings on Sunday mornings. Besides the ones listed, special large group evening Adult Forums are often held at special times of the year. Come whenever you can! Below is the schedule for the Adult Forum classes:

Last year during the Advent season, Bethel members were afforded the opportunity to participate in the ELCA Good Gifts program. This is a wonderful program allowing members to purchase gifts that include valuable farm animals, medical, and school supplies for those in need around the world. The response was amazing, reflecting Bethel’s commitment to sharing blessings from God. This year again, during Advent, Bethel members will be able to partake of gift giving options that change lives around the world in honor of friends and loved ones. Look for the bulletin inserts during this same period where you can make your gift selections.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOESELCA Good Gifts are unique because the church (present in far corners of the world) is the delivery system. Our churches identify the needs and provide solutions. Less than 10% of your gifts are used for administrative and fundraising costs which makes it a program with costs significantly lower than other organizations.

JOIN IN!Won’t you take the opportunity to join your Bethel family and support this worthwhile program during the season of giving?
