O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear Rejoice, Rejoice! Three English Folk Songs Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Kate Barker and Sylvia Oines From a set of six folk songs, we’ve chosen the final three songs as reflections to refresh the soul: Lento, Andante tranquillo, and Allegro Vivace.

What Child Is This English Ballad, 16th century Kate Barker and Sylvia Oines Tune: Greensleeves; Arr.: Ralph Vaughan Williams

What Child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading Nails, spear, shall pierce him through; the cross be borne for me, for you Hail, hail, the Word made flesh, the babe the son of Mary So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, one and all, to own him The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him Raise, raise the song on high. The virgin sings her lullaby Joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary

He is Born (Il est né, le divin enfant) Traditional 19th century French Carol Sylvia Oines This joyful rendition is arranged for piano by Sylvia Oines. Like many beloved folk tunes and text, the exact source is a mystery.

He is born, the divine Christ Child; play the oboe and bagpipes merrily He is born, the divine Christ Child; sing we all of the Savior mild Through long ages of the past, prophets have foretold His coming Through long ages of the past, now the time has come at last

Jesus, Lord of all the world; coming as a child among us Jesus, Lord of all the world: grant to us Thy heavenly peace

The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy West Indies Traditional Arr.: Ellen Coman Sylvia Oines This exuberant carol calls us to move! Singing, dancing or clapping here would be appropriate.

The Virgin Mary had a baby boy—and they said that his name is Jesus He come from the Glory, He come from the glorious kingdom Oh, yes, believers—He come from the glorious kingdom

Christmas Time is Here Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976) Kate Barker and Peter Moe Christmas time is here, happiness and cheer Fun for all that children call their favorite time of year Sleigh bells in the air, beauty everywhere Yuletide by the fireside and joyful memories there Christmas time is here, we’ll all be drawing near Oh, that we could always see such spirit through the year

Sussex Carol Traditional English Carol Arr.: Sondra Tucker Sylvia Oines On Christmas night all Christians sing, to hear the news the angels bring News of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our merciful King’s birth Then why should we on earth be sad, since our Redeemer has made us glad When from our sin he set us free, all for to gain our liberty All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night Glory to God in highest heaven, peace on earth and goodwill, amen

O Come, All Ye Faithful John Wade (1711-1786) Amy Eyler and Sylvia Oines Congregation, please sing along:

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come ye; O come ye to Bethlehem Come, and behold him, born the King of angels O come, let us adore him; O come let us adore him O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord True God from true God, Light from light eternal Born of a virgin, a mortal he comes Very God, begotten, not created (Chorus) Sing, choirs of angels; sing in exultation Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above Glory to God, all glory in the highest (Chorus)

Light Dawns on a Weary World (reprise) Kate Barker Silent Night, Holy Night Arr.: Bert Carlson Kate Barker and Sylvia Oines

Words: Joseph Mohr (1792-1848); Music: Franz Gruber (1787-1863) The story goes like this: On Christmas Eve in 1818, in a small village in Austria, there was some problem with the organ. (Not the organist!) The choir director was given short notice to come up with something that could be sung with guitar accompaniment. And the rest is history…. This carol is indeed lovely with guitar accompaniment, and our organ is freshly repaired and tuned, but we decided to end the evening with this adaptation by Kate Barker and Sylvia Oines for cello and piano.

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright ‘Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly host sing Alleluia Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
