LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

!THE COLLECT !Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the

Book of Isaiah chapter 35 beginning at the 1st verse

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass

over it, and fools shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !Psalm 146 Lauda, anima mea.

1.Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul!* I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 2.Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. 3.When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. 4.Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help!* whose hope is in the Lord their God. 5.Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; 6.Who gives justice to those who are-oppressed, * and food to those who hunger. 7.The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind;* the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; 8.The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. 9.The Lord shall reign for ever,* your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! !

Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen. !

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of James chapter 5 beginning at the 7th verse. !Be patient, therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.  Do not grumble, brethren, against one another, that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the doors.  As an example of suffering and patience, brethren, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.  !Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel

according to Matthew ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?" And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:  the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is he who takes no offense at me."  As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings' houses. Why then did you go

!5

Page 6: Advent3a2013

out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.  This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.' Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. !

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: !Today is the third Sunday in Advent. It is called often by the Latin term “Gaudete” which means rejoice. !In the Latin Mass the introit for this particular Sunday was taken from Philippians 4:4-6 which says !

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. !

Gaudete Sunday places us in the middle of the Advent season when the theme changes from that of the Jesus coming to us as judge at the end of time, to that of Jesus coming to us as the babe of the manger. !When we consider this we must keep in mind the very powerful message of John 1:14

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his

!6

Page 7: Advent3a2013

glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. !

Theologians refer to God becoming flesh by use of the term “incarnation” meaning, God in the flesh. !It is important for us to remember that God remains within us in a mystical and yet real way, directing our thoughts and our actions, inspiring us to good works and calling us to renew and to strengthen our relationship with him. !Today in our parish there is true cause for rejoicing, as we witness twenty eight (28) persons strengthening their commitment to God almighty in the sacramental rite of laying-on-of hands in Holy Confirmation. !Liturgical Theologian, the late Professor Frank C. Quinn (1932-2008) wrote in an article, that while “confirmation does not indicate any addition to baptism, it yet refers to the bishop’s role in the initiation process. !Confirmation is the rite of laying-on-of hands after the practise of the Apostles along with signing on the forehead with chrism - a mixture of olive oil and balsam, blessed by the bishop on Maundy Thursday. !Baptism, Laying-on-of Hands and making one’s Communion for the first time form the process of Christian Initiation. Those being Confirmed and making their First Communion today now stand with the rest of us as committed, resolute and filled with the Holy Spirit in representing Christ and His Church in the world. !!

May God continually pour his blessing upon them. !Your friend and priest, !Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !!
