As an outdoor activity, mountain hiking presents great opportunities for health, companion- ship and adventure. The Alpine Associations gives the following recommendations to make mountain hiking as safe and enjoyable as possible. 1. Healthy in the mountains: Mountain hiking is an endurance activity. This exertion of the heart and circulation requires sound health and a realistic assessment of one’s own capabili- ties. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that ensures no one in the group will get out of breath. 2. Careful planning: Hiking maps, guide books, the Internet and experts will inform you on the length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions of the trail of interest. Always choose tours to suit the whole group! Pay special attention to weather reports since rain, wind and cold all increase the risk of accidents. 3. Fully equipped: Adapt your gear or equipment to your activity and keep the weight of your backpack low. Always carry rain, cold and sun protection in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and mobile telephone (Euro emergency number 112). Maps or GPS will help with orientation. 4. Wear suitable shoes: Good hiking shoes protect and minimise strain on feet and improve sure footing! Choose shoes that fit perfectly, have non-slip treaded soles, are watertight and light in weight. 5. Surefootedness is key: Falls resulting from slipping and stumbling are the most common cause of accident! Be aware that walking too fast or when tired will seriously impair your surefootedness and concentration. Watch out for falling rocks: Walk mindfully to avoid kicking stones loose. 6. Stay on marked trails: Walking off trails increases the risk of becoming lost, falling, and causing or suffering rock fall. Avoid taking shortcuts and return to the last known point if you ever stray from the trail. Frequently underestimated and highly dangerous are steep fields covered with old snow! 7. Regular breaks: Taking breaks at the right times allows you to recover and to enjoy the landscape and company. You need to eat and drink to maintain your stamina and concentrati- on. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst-quenchers. Muesli bars, dried fruits and crackers stave off hunger while you are underway. 8. Responsibility for children: Know that variety and playful discovery come first for children! In passages with a risk of falling, one adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require sustained concentration over a long time are not suitable for children. 9. Small groups: Small groups guarantee flexibility and allow the group members to help one another. Inform trusted persons of your destination, route and return. Stay together in the group. Attention solo hikers: Even seemingly minor incidents can lead to serious emergency situations. 10. Respect for nature and environment: To protect the mountain nature: Do not leave any rubbish, do not make unnecessary noise, stay on the trails, do not alarm wild or grazing animals, do not trample or pick at plants, and respect protected areas. Use public transport or carpooling to get to your destination. © Österreichischer Alpenverein, 2014 01 Blasiteich 02 Pritzteich 03 Agrarteich 04 St. Egidi 05 Outdoor Pool & Minature Golf 06 climbing wall / Hapimag 07 Alpenkräutergarten 08 Sport & Recreation Area/ Jufa Lungau 09 Tennis Court "Sportclub" 10 Recreation Area "Murinsel" 11 Church of St. Michael 12 Unique view over 13 Church of St. Martin 14 Golf course 15 Augustinkapelle St. Michael/St. Martin 17 Ponyalm 18 Horse center / play fields / Katschhausen 19 Adventure parc 20 Katschi`s Gold Run 21 Herzerlweg 22 Maria chapel 23 Open-air pool Gries 24 Church of St. Georgen 25 Church of St. Peter 26 Village of flowers St. Peter 27 Water flower Rennweg 28 Choo-choo-train 29 Bacherlebnisweg 30 Lieser waterfall 31 Source of the Lieser 32 Valley of 1000 orchids 33 Roman milestones - Grainwald 34 Water-path Leisnitz 35 Old mill 36 Pfarrkirche St. Margarethen 37 Lime trees at the church St. Augustin 38 Recreation Area "Unterbayrdorf" 39 Hl. Follow the street “Schulgasse” in the direction of sports facilities and just turn right in front of the sports hall building and follow the street to the end of the football field. First, it is a wide forest road, after a few hundred meters you leave this trail and crosses uphill through the high forest - after about 50 m you reach a forest path again. Follow this road on the left downhill to the bend, where you leave the path on the right via a wooden walkway and follow this path through the forest and later through woods and meadows. Along the way you cross the pasture fence twice over wooden overpasses and finally reach the "Boarnwiese" with a beautiful view towards to the Castle of Moosham. Continue for a few hundred meters to the village of Pichlern. Once there, you have several options to go back to St. Margarethen - either via the Thomataler country road or via the village of Pischelsdorf, from there on the well-known Murradweg.

Straight on to the pump station of the cable cars. Here you turn right down to the slope (meadow) which you cross. You reach again the meadow edge goes through the forest always down in a turn and comes back to the piste or meadow. Now go downhill along the edge of the meadow and then comes back to the goods road and crosses the meadow a second time. Follow the forest road to the end of the A1 (in winter a ski slope). The path leads over the Moosgraben again and this grave you follow left down to the old mill. Bonner Hütte – Kößlbacher Alm – Bonner Hütte circular route

Start: Bonner Hütte

Description: Start at Bonner Hütte on trail no. 113, northwest towards Lungau. After 10 minutes you reach a passage (also border of Kärnten and Salzburg). Go through the passage, following the steep track that leads through marshy, flat terrain. The boards laid down stop your feet getting wet. Continue on this road until you reach a crossroads of forest roads. Choose the road leading down the valley (and follow the signage) and you’ll reach the unmanaged Esseralm huts, which offer a majestic view of the Murtal. Continue on the forest road leading down the valley until you come to another fork. Turn left here, cross the small Leisnitz stream and slip through the pas-sage next to the gate. You’ll soon see the unmanaged Meisnitzeralm hut on the right. Pay attention here: take the road approximately 20m beyond the hut (look for the yellow trail markings) and continue on this road through meadows and then into high forest. Continue on this road, which is often marshy and wet, until you reach a hatch. From here you can continue straight or take the road downhill on the right, which leads to a wide forest road. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will reach a fork. You can already see Kößlbacher Alm from here and Branntweinerhütte is just a little further. At this last fork, road B and then trail no. 111 lead back to Bonner Hütte via Aineckhütten and Sackstadl.

Tip: In 2016, the Bonner Hütte is closed. More Information in the tourist office Katschberg or Rennweg.

Hike to Lasörnsee

Start: Start: car park 1 (barbecue area) at Pöllatal

Description: Travel from Rennweg to car park 1 (barbecue area) at Pöllatal either by choo-choo train or by car. From here, first walk along the asphalted road until you reach the first bridge on the left and go over this bridge. Continue straight along trail no. 13 to a forest road. After approximately 300 metres you can continue along the well-constructed forest road or take a steeper shortcut (narrow steep track, mostly in the forest, passing Lasörn waterfall, and finally leading back to the forest road). The forest road takes you on a wide trail with curved and straight sections that leads to the hut. From Lasörnhütte a steep track leads up to Lasörnsee. At the top you can enjoy pure nature: alpine asters, alpine azalea and coal roses are just some of the plants that can be found here. On the return route you can go back on trail no. 13 to Lasörnhütte and then to car park 1 (barbecue area) at Pöllatal, where you can travel back out of the valley to Rennweg either by choo-choo train or by car.

After another 20 minutes uphill you reach the second Lanischsee. After a break, return via the same route. Then return to Rennweg by choo-choo train or by car.
