Scientific Method
1) Observe some aspect of the universe.
2) Develop a tentative description called a hypothesisthat is consistent !ith !hat you have observed.
") #se the hypothesis to make predictions.
$) %est those predictions by e&periments or further
observations and modify the hypothesis based on yourresults.
') (epeat steps " and $ until there are no discrepanciesbet!een hypothesis and e&periment andorobservation.

%he scientific method is the best !ay yet discovered
for separating scientific truths from falsehoods and
delusions. A simple version looks something like this

Scientific Method
1) Observation and description of a phenomenon or roupof phenomena.
!) "ormulation of a h#pothesis to e$plain the phenomena.
%) &se of the h#pothesis to predict the e$istence of otherphenomena, or to predict 'uantitativel# the results of ne(

) Performance of e$perimental tests of the predictions b#
several independent e$perimenters and properl#performed e$periments.

Procedure'. Mark your name or initials near the edge o+ the paper BN PAN!BL.
,. Craw a circle in the middle using a 3uarter or "lm can.
D. Poke a small round hole 1smaller than a dime2 in the center o+ thepaper.
E. Fse markers and a $eeseGs Piece to make small dots o+ dye on the ring.
5. %his paper will #ecome your chromatogram.6. %o make a wick- roll a second "lter paper into a cylinder
7. Bnsert this rolled wick into the round hole in your chromatogram.
H. Iill the cup hal+ +ull o+ tap water.
(. Lay the chromatogram with the wick etending down into the water
'). Jatch your chromatogram- as the water carries the ink as it tra&els.
''. K#ser&e what happens to the pigments.',. Jhen the water nearly reaches the edge remo&e it and dry.
'D. Ciscard the wick into the waste #asket.
