Monthly BSAA Meeting Report - DecemberThe BSAA had it’s monthly meeting of the Board of Directors and members on Tuesday, December 1 at the Brady Street BID office.

The meeting included a presentation from Ravi and Rosy Sachdeva regarding their request for a liquor license for their proposed Indian grocery store, Bharat Market to be located at 1556 N Farwell St. The Sachdeva’s requested support for their liquor license application from the Board to include craft beers and liquor options as part of the Indian food and crafts planned to be sold at the proposed store.

BSAA members were able to ask questions about the targeted consumers for the market including the growing number of ethnic Indians living in the area as well as other neighbors wanting to purchase Indian food items and spices not readily available at the local grocery stores. Other questions focused on the type of alcoholic products to be sold. The Sachdeva’s indicated that it is their intentions to carry only craft beers and “high end” bourbons, scotches and other hard liquors. They mentioned that they have no plans to carry low cost products nor single serve beers except for craft beers sold in 750 ml bottles. The BSAA Board informed Alderman Kovac on the Association’s position on the application.

The Association also welcomed Claire Zautke, Director of Community Relations for Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. Zautke shared the County’s current programs and initiatives including updates on the County’s UpLift MKE program to provide workforce training, the new Office of African American Affairs as well as reforms to the County’s House of Corrections to name just a few. Zautke indicated that her role in the County Executive’s office is to facilitate communication and information sharing with Milwaukee’s communities.

Lastly, the Board finalized it’s slate of Board Member and Officer candidates to be voted on by all members at the BSAA Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 15 at the Renaissance Place, 1451 N Prospect Ave starting at 5:30 pm. The slate of officers includes Teresa Morton, President; Lynn Forthaus, Vice President; Dan Marusic, Treasurer; and Chris Johnson, Secretary. It was also announced that Frank Alioto has agreed to give a presentation on the history of Brady Street at the Holiday Party.

All BSAA members are welcome to attend monthly meetings which are typically held on the 1st Tuesday every month at 6:30pm at the Brady Street BID office, unless otherwise noted.

- Christopher L. Johnson, Secretary BSAA

Korean works in the exhibition include funerary garments designed by Yang Bae Jeon, intricately carved hanji sewing boxes and objects by master artisan, Haemija Kim, and prints of Buddhist sculptures and architectural elements created in the takbon technique of ink-impression making by Kumgang Seunim. New apartments and commercial space coming to historic building

A long-vacant, then city-owned building at 827-829 E. Brady St. has officially been sold to Pepperoni Cannoli LLC, led by Milwaukee architect Russell Drewry and

John Miceli. The building was constructed in 1916 and is located in the Brady Street Historic District, which has both a local historic designation and a National Register listing. Plans are to restore the former Pecoraro's Food Market building into 430 square feet of street-level commercial space, a first-floor studio apartment, a studio unit on the second floor and a larger one-bedroom apartment on the second and third floors.

This revitalization at the west end of Brady Street further enhances our unique neighborhood. In addition, the City’s Strong Neighborhoods Plan installed a new sign at the edge of their recenly beautified vacant lot next door. The trees and bushes installed this summer are growing in nicely.

Winter Parking Regulations Now in EffectRegulations effective December 1, 2015-March 1, 2016Winter parking regulations for the City of Milwaukee take effect Tuesday, December 1, 2015 and remain in effect through Tuesday, March 1, 2016. During this winter period, most residential streets require alternate side night parking, but there are exceptions to the rule. For example, overnight parking is prohibited on major arterial streets and bus routes. These streets are not posted “no overnight parking.”Posted parking rules take precedence - check for posted signs FIRST for winter parking regulations on those streets where you plan to park.

Click on mpw.milwaukee.gov/services/parking_regs

If there are no posted signs, go to mpw.milwaukee.gov/services/winterregsfor more information on the winter parking rules, or call (414) 286-CITY (2489).

Additionally, some streets on the near south side that usually allow for overnight parking on both sides of the street for most of the year, now require residents to park on alternate sides of the street overnight from December 1 to March 1. For more information on overnight winter parking rules in the City’s 5-Day Exception Parking Area (areas of the East Side and Downtown), please see a separate release sent at right.

The Department of Public Works offers a text message alert system called Snow Mobile - Winter Text Alert, which informs subscribers when the City declares a snow emergency or when the “4-inch rule” goes into effect. Sign up for this alert at milwaukee.gov/mpw - look for this logo:

Prefer an email message? Sign up through E-Notify at milwaukee.gov/enotify to receive an email when a snow emergency is declared. Avoid parking citations or a tow! The Department of Public Works encourages City residents to follow the winter parking regulations, which will help our crews remove snow effectively, efficiently, and safely this winter season.

###

City of Milwaukee Winter Parking Rules for the5-Day Exception Parking Area Now in EffectWinter parking regulations go into effect in the City of Milwaukee December 1, 2015 and will last through Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Overnight and daytime parking rules in many areas of the city change to allow Department of Public Works (DPW) plows to access more street pavement –curb to curb if possible -to remove snow and ice more effectively, efficiently, and most importantly, safely.

Residents who live in an area of Milwaukee known as the “5-Day Exception Parking Area” are allowed to park on both sides of their street for most of the year. In the past, when winter parking regulations took effect each December 1, residents had to move their vehicles each night to the correct side of the street.

Beginning December 1, residents in the 5-Day Exception Area may continue to park overnight on both sides of the street unlessDPW announces that a snow-plow or other public works operation will be conducted overnight. When this announcement is made, residents must move their vehicles immediately to the correct side of the street –odd side of the street on an odd-numbered day (before midnight) or the even side of the street on an even numbered day (before midnight) -for legal overnight parking. However, any and all posted parking signs on the streetwhere you park TAKE PRECEDENCE over the 5-Day Exception Parking Area rules. Be sure to follow the rules on the posted sign when parking. While DPW will send a notice to media outlets announcing an overnight operation in the 5-Day Exception Area, residents are encouraged to sign up to receive a Snow Mobile 5-Day Exception Parking Area Text Alert message. Subscribers will receive a text message on their cell phone(s) alerting them that a DPW operation has been called, and that all vehicles must be moved to the correct side of the street. Residents who prefer an email message can sign up for an E-Notify 5-Day Exception Parking email message that will transmit the same information.

To sign up for either or both alerts, go to milwaukee.gov/mpw or call (414) 286-CITY for assistance. Once the Area streets have been plowed, DPW will notify residents again that the operation has concluded and overnight parking is once again permitted on both sides of your street, until the next operation is called. Failure to move a vehicle overnight during a declared DPW operation will result in a $20 citation and the possibility of being towed. Towed vehicles are subject to a $105 reclamation fee plus a $20 per day storage fee. Remember - you also need a valid overnight parking permit to park on the street. For more information on all winter parking regulations, please call (414) 286-CITY (-2489) or go to the DPW website at milwaukee.gov/mpw.
