TheChamber of Commerce amongst others have been approachedfor their views about a “community museum” with the exhibitshoused around the town in local buildings and businesses to makeup a heritage trail. People could follow it using leaflets whichcould be picked up at the various locations or a by using asmartphone app, depending on your preference. Does Faringdonneed a museum? Originally there were just sixmembers but now we have around 40 regular runners. Theethos of the Far Runners is to encourage people of all abilitiesto enjoy running and to make sure no-one ever gets left behindas one of the leaders always stays with the slowest runner atthe back. We have three leaders: Marea Brown, Andrea Plantand Linda Woodward. We are a fun, inclusive, friendly groupwho don't take things too seriously. Our members range in agefrom teens to sixty-something's! We have runners of all abilitiesfrom elite marathon runners to complete beginners. We breakup into different groups so that people can run with someoneof a similar ability. We hold social events and enter racestogether too. If you'd like to come and join us you'd be verywelcome. Just turn up at the Old Town Hall at 6.30pm on aTuesday, 7pm on a Thursday and at the Leisure Centre at 9.30am on Sundays. There is also a crack of dawn run at 6am onTuesdays at the Old Town Hall. 1000Lets Talk about Whisky

Have you ever thought about what makes the dram in your glasstaste as it does? Obviously, the initial processes of malting,fermenting and distilling play their part by producing the new makespirit that contains the ‘DNA’ of the individual distillery but you maybe surprised to learn that the cask a whisky is matured incontributes around 60%+ to the final flavour profile. Historically,casks of many different types were used for whisky as it was moreabout the fact that they were a convenient container fortransporting spirit than about the attributes they could give.However, it gradually became apparent that the cask type had asignificant influence on the whisky and nowadays maturation ismostly carried out in either ex-bourbon or ex-sherry casks – mostlyex-bourbon as they are currently the cheaper option.Bourbon casks are made from American White Oak and this tendsto produce whisky that will have vanilla, honey, citrus/orchard fruit,and nut characteristics. Additionally, the Bourbon cask will havebeen charred during the production process and the carbon charwill extract much of the sulphur elements from the spirit. Bycontrast, sherry casks are made from European oak which is moretannic and is toasted not charred, which leads to more driedfruit/Christmas cake flavours and a rich, darker coloured whisky.There is occasionally some deviation from this straight forward splitas Highland Park have American Oak casks made that then havesherry in them before being used for maturing their whisky andthey combine varying proportions of these with their EuropeanOak matured spirit.Obviously cask size, time spent in the cask, storage conditions andother factors also have an impact on the character of whisky butthe taste and aroma differences between whiskies matured indifferent cask types is perhaps what is most easily discerned. Hello again and a warm welcome, to some September musings – the month after our big local White Horse Show and withadditional local ones to come this month.As I write, occasional heavy downpours are interrupting the steady sunshine; the butterflies are busy in the grassland and
trees and no doubt barbeques are busily smoking everywhere!..which leads me to a new FAO and WHO report on the top 10 food borne parasites; inthe top half of the list is the pork tapeworm, the dog hydatid tapeworm, the PETSpassport Echinococcus tapeworm, Toxoplasma and the waterborne Cryptosporidiaprotozoans…the report does list ways to reduce the risk of getting infected, whichincludes well-composted organic fertilisers, clean not poor water quality especiallywhen fruit and veg need washing, and finally, regarding outdoor cooking, to make surethat all meat is well cooked!!The PETS scheme for travelling pets requires that all relevant pet species are treatedfor the Echinococcus parasite within 1 and 5 days prior to entering sovereign British
territory. As I’ve said before, this is for HUMAN health and the tick treatment, for ANIMAL health, is no longer mandatory.Just for the record, we have had a case of Ehrlichiosis, caused by the TICK-borne blood infection of an obligate intracellularbacterial parasite called Ehrlichia canis, in a dog from the Eastern Mediterranean. This long-term diseaseshows initially as enlarged lymph nodes, fever, weakness, anaemia, inflamed blood vessels and can lead togeneral haemorrhage. This disease is transmitted by the Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus). This tick can bekilled and repelled by products put on the coat before travel, NOT legally mandatory, ones that everyveterinary practice can advise you on before your pet travels. Or not, if the Tunnel train breaks down and 6hours are spent before the rescue of the passengers – and what about the dogs left in their cars still on thetrain? I have to confess that I caution anyone taking their dog/s further south than the top level of mid-France, where the riskmap is covered in red downwards. Can animal welfare be fully supported and that’s without the ambient temperatures ateach location? A subject which we will be discussing at the Practice with our clients more formally. I accept that many of youwho travel responsibly with a pet, do so very well and have a great time.
Warm evenings are also likely times that the controversial Chinese lanterns are being released. I foundtwo, close together, in fields where my livestock graze. One concession has been the change from thedangerous wires supporting both the canopy and burner to the new bamboo rims and cross-threads ofnylon in the ones I found. From the wind direction and final resting positions of these two dying objects,they actually floated, probably still glowing, over the very top of neighbouring open-sided barns full of hay!What a calamity if that hay had been set alight! What a worse calamity it would be if the bamboo rimsplintered in a sheep or cow’s mouth as they chewed it, then swallowed and puncturing the oesophagus ora stomach. In my opinion, can organisers and users of these lanterns please check wind and weather andthink of problems that even this new design will still cause? Or, better still, NOT use them at all.
Thinking of flying, the RSPB have reported that Phase II of the NI Red KiteReintroduction Project has been completed. The Project is jointly run by the RSPB, theWelsh Kite Trust and the Golden Eagle Trust. Twenty-seven red kites were released inCounty Down in 2008, with five birds fledged in July 2010 – the first there for over 200years. Observations will continue until the population becomes self-sustaining, and theRSPB will continue to raise awareness of the continued, unwarranted persecution thatkites face, including a number of poisoning incidents which are against the law and fly inthe face of animal welfare. How many of us here take the opportunity to stop and watcha kite circle and dive down with such consummate skill and precision, as masters of theprevailing wind? A lesser known fact is that 25 years ago, on 1st August, five birds werereleased into the Chilterns. There are now over 1000 breeding pairs that have spread out across England to create asustainable, balanced distribution, when not confused by extra feeding and resulting in an excess density of birds than Naturecan sustain, unless much planning has gone into it. One example is Gigrin Farm in mid-Wales, working with the Welsh KiteTrust and the RSPB.Birds and lists – Big Garden Birdwatch 2014 still lists the House Sparrow as #1, although these busy little birds remain on theRed (for danger) List due to a 62% drop in their numbers since 1979. The Grey Squirrel was the top mammal, being seen in 72%of respondents’ gardens.
Finally another plug for micro-chipping your pets. It is reported that a postman made anunscheduled special delivery of a feline stowaway in his post van, which had travelled fromSouthampton to Berkshire. After this 67 mile journey, the Staff at the Battersea Dog andCats Home in Old Windsor couldn’t locate any micro-chip.Cats and curiosity!.. Now the tortie and white cat has the name “Jess” but I don’t knowwhether the very caring postman was called Pat?This must demonstrate the importance of micro-chipping as no-one knows how far and bywhat means they travel.Wherever YOU are travelling, do it safely and enjoy the company of your smallest memberof your family, your pet.Thank you for staying on this rollercoaster journey with me – see you next month!

For me, September heralds autumn. I know it's going tostart cooling down a little and we are all going to berewarded with an amazing bounty, all ready to harvest.The colours, fragrance and textures of food at this timebegin to get us ready for cold winter nights, lighting the fire,drawing the curtains and hunkering down.A favourite pastime in our family is foraging and there are somany things you can find in the hedgerows. Pop along to thelibrary to find a book to help you out if you decide to go.There's a great one by Richard Mabey which is worth a flickthrough.Anyway, the fruit I have in mind is the incomparableblackberry. With its beautiful knobbly appearance andunique flavour, the blackberry is really rather regal.On the one hand I am pleased that people don't seek themout these days and take a container with them when theytake a stroll to collect these little beauties but on the other,it seems rather a shame that it is a lost practice. It is, after all,free food and rather good food at that.Picking blackberries is quite therapeutic too, and ratheraddictive as it goes.To reach the best and most plump is almost a competition!I love to just pack the blackberries up into a bag and thenfreeze them. They have a marvellous ability of staying freeflowing so that when you need to use them, you can justbring out however many you need, all year round.Making jam is rather essential too.Cook the blackberries down until just beginning to softenthen add the equivalent weight in jam sugar.Dissolve then bubble for around 10-15 minutes until it setswhen you spoon on to a cold plate. The smell of cookedberries is so wonderful, I have it in mind to use them for aquick budget pudding.Pop down to Kwiksave and purchase a box of blackberrieswith a sheet of ready rolled puff pastry.Unroll on to a baking sheet - no need for parchment, it's onsome already. Preheat the oven to 200°/ gas mark 6. Mixtogether 50g ground almonds with a little apple juice tomake a thick paste. Spread over the pastry leaving a borderof around an inch. Cover liberally with berries then bake for20-30 minutes until puffed and golden. Warm a little darkcoloured jam then brush to glaze whilst everything is stillwarm.Hey presto! Pudding is served.

‘First Childhood’, by Lord Berners
This is Lord Berners’ first autobiographical book, written in 1941, and takes the reader from his earlychildhood memories up to his first four terms at Elmley. There are 25 short chapters, eachconcentrating on particular persons, places or events.Born in 1883, Lord Berners’ first memory is at his grandparents’ house, Arley, where he is aware of ascreen of brightly coloured pictures cut-out and pasted. Arley House continued to be very importantto him and in the Epilogue Lord Berners reflects that the ‘change at Arley cast a benumbing spell(deprived of emotional feeling) upon the closing years of my childhood’.As an only child, it could often be a solitary life. Sometimes companions would be grown-ups, suchas Mrs. Matchett, the Housekeeper at Arley, whom he fondly referred to as a ‘Fairy Godmother’.Children and adults from the neighbourhood were invited to the house as friends for Lord Berners.Sometimes this arrangement worked well, but at other times it proved unsatisfactory; there is a
wonderful story about Nesta and the Stokes boys in a haystack. Two elderly ladies, widely travelled, and with whom LordBerners spent many happy hours, sparked a love of travel which remained with him.His mother was particularly influential; she was ‘one of the most natural people I’ve ever known’ and ‘we were very happy inone another’s company’. His father he describes as a ‘curious, moody, rather brilliant creature’ who showed a lack of interestin Lord Berners and was seldom around.At aged 7, the local Curate was brought in to teach the young boy, followed by a governess from Geneva, Mademoiselle Bock.Lord Berners’ sense of mischief is at play in the subsequent exit of this young lady. From Chapter 12 onwards the book islargely about his time at the preparatory school, Elmley, which sometimes is frightening for vulnerable young boys. It is LordBerners’ first time away from home and the emotions are sometimes raw. He recalls there were ‘two large flies in theointment of my school life’: the Headmaster, and his growing awareness that he is ‘not good at games’. There is a delightfulinterlude about one of the summer holidays.Some of the character of Lord Berners is evident in this book: his need to make friends, his imagination and creativity, hissense of inferiority (seen through a lack of ‘physical strength and superiority in games’ and ‘manliness’), and his (often-hindered) solace in the Arts and in music particularly. But throughout this time his sense of humour and mischief,understandably dimmed at times, is never lost.The vocabulary used does reflect his classical learning, but nevertheless it is an easy-going style. I often found myselfchuckling, not only by the events themselves, but also by the way it is written. Wine & PreservationWe are given the warning that drinking an entire bottle ofwine is bad for our health, whilst at the same time; we aretold that if any wine is left in the bottle, it would be ‘off’ bythe very next day. Arrhhh, the inner torment, what to do;health or off wine??Some enthusiasts will say only wimps leave anything left inthe bottle, but there are many variables that must be takeninto account. Alcoholic strength is right up there on the list;especially if you plan to operate heavy machinery or drive avehicle! Reports indicate that alcohol remains in yoursystem an hour for every unit. One 175ml glass of averagestrength alcohol, say 12% abv is 2.1 units of alcohol(according to the NHS website). Doing the maths, a 750mlbottle of wine of this strength contains 4.3 x 175ml glasses,or the equivalent of (2.1 x 4.3), which is near on 9 units andobviously will be more if the alcoholic strength is higher. Ifthis is consumed prior to the body having time to break itdown, the alcohol remains in the system until the morning.Without turning this into a lecture or guilt trip, the pointbeing made is that sometimes it is a necessity to save some

The Language Centre at Shrivenham Station, based at 7 AxisRoad, opposite St Alban’s Church in Watchfield, offers
‘English as a Foreign Language’ to the dependants andfamilies of international officers attending courses at theDefence Academy, and also provides tuition in otherlanguages to families across the entire Defence Academysite and residents from local communities.
English ClassesStudents can join English classes at any time and wewelcome visiting students. In class we practice speaking,listening, reading and writing skills along with learning newvocabulary and grammar. We aim to make classes fun andinteresting for our students and we also run lots of excitingcultural activities and visits. Both group and private lessonsare available to suit all abilities (from beginner through toadvanced) and the Language Centre is open for Englishclasses in the morning each weekday. Students can elect tosit diploma examinations in English on completion of theircourses from the Cambridge Examination Board and we alsorun examination preparation lessons at the Language Centre.
Foreign Language ClassesWe hold evening classes at the Language Centre in French,Spanish, German and Italian. The Language Centre offers awide range of evening classes to suit all abilities - fromcomplete beginner to advanced conversationalist. Mostcourses take place in the evening, although some may beavailable during the day, depending on numbers of students.Classes are normally one and a half hours per week over 12weeks, and they are designed to develop all four languageskills - speaking, understanding, reading and writing - with anemphasis on speaking and understanding in the classsessions. Evening courses are open to adults and aredesigned to give greater confidence in speaking a foreignlanguage, whether for travel, work or just for fun. FromSeptember we will be running classes for beginners inFrench, German, Italian and Spanish and classes forimprovers in French, Spanish and Italian.

This will also be usefulif you have any injury or mobility issues preventing you fromexecuting the exercises properly.
