CAREERS IN NURSING, HEALTH & AGED CARE
The backbone of healthcare“Nurses and midwives are the backbone of our healthcare system and it is critical we have suffi cient nurses and midwives with the right qualifi cations to meet the needs of our community both now and in the future.”
This comes from Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery Professor Di Twigg, who is conducting research focusing on the nursing workforce, patient outcomes and quality care.
Professor Twigg said there was a global nursing shortage and fi nding a solution to this shortage was critical to prevent escalating adverse health outcomes.
“The World Health Organisation estimated a shortage of almost 4.3 million doctors, midwives, nurses and support workers globally,” she said. “In Australia, Health Workforce Australia identifi ed projected shortages of 20,079 nurses in 2016 increasing to 109,490 in 2025.”
ECU has the largest undergraduate nursing program in Western Australia and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses that prepare nurses and midwives to meet growing demand.
“Our purpose is to inspire quality nursing and midwifery practice through innovative teaching, research and collaboration,” Professor Twigg said.
“We offer cutting-edge clinical learning and academic leadership by engaging industry bodies, and individual, community and government organisations to ensure students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress their careers.”
In 2014, students will have the opportunity to extend their clinical and professional skills further through a new postgraduate course – the Master of Healthcare Studies.
Professor Twigg said the course was designed for registered nurses, midwives and other health professionals and was a structured, work-integrated learning program designed in collaboration with a student’s employer and the university.

CAREERS IN NURSING, HEALTH & AGED CARE
Perth Home Care ServicesThe government has undertaken signifi cant reform of the health system to keep older people at home longer and ensure the health and wellbeing of Australians as they age.
According to Perth Home Care Services
Executive Manager Organisational Strategy
and Development Melissa Young, this means
there is a shift towards a more consumer-
directed model so that ultimately people have
more control over how their money is spent
when choosing aged care services.
As more consumer-directed approaches
become available, people will have more
options in who they can hire for support.
Perth Home Care Services has an intentional
focus on consumer-directed, person
centered approaches and is doing its best to
enable older Western Australians to stay in
their home for longer by providing practical
and tailored services and support.
Ms Young said at Perth Home Care Services
they believed supporting people began with
a conversation.
“We view our work with people as a
partnership where people have control,” she
said. “To do our part in this partnership, it
helps for us to really understand who people
are – their life and aspirations, their family
and friends and their role in their lives.
“When people contact us, we ask them
what would it take for them to continue
living in their own home, what will make the
biggest difference? We hear what people
say and respond to individual’s unique
needs, adjusting what we can do to help as
people’s needs and circumstances change.
“Every individual is different; what makes
the biggest difference in staying at home,
connected to family and community may be
different from one person to another.”
Perth Home Care Services works to ensure
they fi nd the right person to work with
people they support, and match employees
with people they support according to their
interests and abilities.
“The main thing about the people who work
with us is they are passionate about the work
they do in the community,” Ms Young said.
“The people we look for to work with us will
be able to do things with people instead of
for people and develop relationships with the
people they support.”
Ms Young said they were always looking
out for people to work with Perth Home
Care Services, and fl exible hours along
with locally placed work made it an
enjoyable and satisfying place to work
where people could make a difference. As
well as the aged care sector, Perth Home
Care Services also provides services and
support to people with disabilities and
mental health problems.

Work life balanceHenderCare Chief Executive Offi cer Amanda Blight said the appeal of working for a nursing and support services agency was often the work life balance that it was known to provide.
“For busy people trying to adopt a life where
work is no more or less important than their
family or their social and recreational lives,
an agency career often seems to be the
answer,” she said.
“Working for an agency also provides
diverse professional opportunities for those
who are yet to decide on a particular career
pathway.”
Agency work gives both support workers
and nurses the chance to work in a
number of health and community service
sectors helping to defi ne what really
interests an individual
professionally.
Ms Blight said
HenderCare has had
a number of nurses
who have decided
to pursue careers in
community services
after working for the company in these
areas for a number of months, enjoying the
one-on-one contact they had with patients
outside an acute setting.
“Many of our nurses and support workers
change their work availability weekly to
enable all the other important events in their
lives to be accommodated,” she said.
“Some of our staff choose to work a
late shift two days a week or only work
weekends, when their partners are available
to care for their children.
“Other staff only want to pick up the odd
shift to keep up their clinical skills.”
Whatever your working requirements are,
Amanda said she believed working for an
agency was now seen as the right choice
for many a discerning nurse and support
worker.
