INTRODUCTION• Advertising or Advertizing is a form

of communication used to encourage or persuade an audience to continue or take some new action.

• Commercial advertisers use "branding," which involves the repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate certain qualities with the brand in the minds of consumers.

HISTORY OF PRINT ADVERTISING

• The origins of advertising lie thousands of years in the past. One of the first known methods of advertising was an outdoor display, usually an eye- catching sign painted on the wall of a building.

• For e.g. An outdoor advertisement excavated in Rome offers property for rent.

• The first advertisement was somewhat

in the form of stenciled inscriptions. Which were found on earthen bricks prepared by the Babylonians about three thousand years before Christ.

• Print media indeed is the oldest kind of advertising which has a long-long history. This advertising strategy started way back in 1468 during the days of William Caxton when he promoted a book that had his 1st printed advertisement.

• In 1609, an ad appeared in a British newspaper advertising migration opportunities to America.

the Boston News-Letter published the first newspaper ad in Colonial America, which announced the sale of an estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, in 1704.

• The 19th century marked the age of newspaper expansion and the further evolution of print advertising.

New York City hosted the first advertising agents' convention during the 19th century.

• By the close of the 19th century, large corporations had fully embraced print advertising

Print advertising met its first opponent in 1920, when the first U.S. radio station, KDKA, went on the air in Pittsburgh.

HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC ADVERTISING

• Electronic media are media that use electronics or electromechanical energy for the end-user (audience) to access the content.

• Any equipment used in the electronic communication process is considered to be electronic media.

Television• The first television advertisement was

broadcasted in the United States on July 1, 1941. 

•  The first TV ad broadcast in the UK was on ITV on 21 September 1955, advertising Gibbs SR toothpaste.

• The first TV Ad broadcast in the Philippines was on ABS-CBN in 1960, advertising Tide detergent powder. 

•  1948 proved to be the year television advertising truly began to take center stage.

RADIO• The first radio broadcasts aired in the

early 1900s• In the United States, on November 2,

1920, KDKA aired the first commercial broadcast.

• During radio’s Golden Age, advertisers sponsored entire programs, usually with some sort of message like “We thank our sponsors for making this program possible”, airing at the beginning or end of a program.

• The “visual” portion of the broadcast was supplied by the listener’s boundless imagination. Comedian and voice actor Stan Freberg demonstrated this point on his radio show in 1957, using sound effects to dramatize the towing of a 10-ton maraschino cherry by the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Online Advertisement• Online advertising is a form

of promotion that uses the Internet and World Wide Web to deliver marketing messages to attract customers.

• The year 1994 saw the first online advertisement . This initial phase ended with the launch of one of the first ad technologies, the DoubleClick in 1995.

HISTORY OF PRINT ADVERTISING IN INDIA

• Two main events responsible for growth of Indian advertising agencies were: the Swadeshi Movement (1907-1911), which gave rise to indigenous industries, and the second, was the installation of first rotary linotype machine by the Statesman of Calcutta in 1907.

• the first newspapers published in India in the 19th Century carried advertising.

• Ads appear for the first time in print in Hickey's Bengal Gazette. India's first newspaper (weekly).

•  Studios mark the beginning of advertising created in India (as opposed to imported from England) Studios set up for bold type, ornate fonts, more fancy, larger ads

• Ads appear in newspapers in the form of lists of the latest merchandise from England

ONLINE ADVERTISING

• In late 1999, Google began testing a program to sell ads on a CMP basis

• Advertising first appeared on Google.com in January 2000 — text ads were sold by a sales rep on a CPM basis. 

• the bubble burst in Spring 2000, and the online ad banner market crashed

ELECTRONIC MEDIA• RADIO -• Broadcasting began in India with the

formation of a private radio service in Madras in 1924

• In the same year, the British colonial government granted a license to a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company, to open Radio stations in Bombay and Calcutta.

• 1936- Indian Broadcasting Company becomes All India Radio (AIR)

TELEVISION

• 1976- The first advertising appeared on state television.

• 1931- National Advertising Service Pr. Ltd. Bombay set up.

• 1978 -First television commercial seen.

• 1980 -TV was consciously turned into a mass medium as a political/developmental strategy.

• The first major expansion of television in India began in 1972, when a second television station was opened in Bombay

• By 1976, the government found itself running a television network of eight television stations covering a population of 45 million spread over 75,000 square kilometers
