and North Highland Avenue. This committee also plans to take on an additional new project involving working with the City and the owners of Krog Street Market to address the frequently blocked public rights-of-way there.

Jim Abbott, Chairperson of Tree Watch and member of the Stakeholder Committee of the City of Atlanta’s Urban Ecology Framework (UEF), has been working with Tree Watch volunteers and Trees Atlanta to lead recent efforts to remove kudzu from a section of Freedom Park and to plant 75 new trees and shrubs there, including southern red oaks, American lindens, tulip poplars, American hollies, and silky dogwoods; replace 15 dead street trees that were installed last year; and provide more than 100 volunteer hours over the past six months removing invasive trees, shrubs, and vines from Springvale Park, in addition to facilitating professional treatment of ground-layer invasives there. Contact Jim to volunteer for upcoming Tree Watch projects. In addition, UEF is working on a new Tree Protection Ordinance to benefit all City residents.

Archivist Teresa Burk and her committee are working with the Trolley Barn Board and staff to secure interim housing there for items destined for the Emory Archives. Please contact Teresa if you have items you’d like to donate.

The Lifelong Inman Park Committee is actively exploring possible senior housing options; supporting the Hospitality Committee’s Ambassador program with Lifelong Committee members among the fifteen Ambassadors who welcome newcomers; offering aging-related information sessions; and monitoring property tax legislation and advocating for tax relief for long-term homeowners. Future plans include offering aging residents and their caregivers information about available resources. The Lifelong Inman Park Committee meets once monthly with subgroups working on various activities. Contact Lifelong Chair Cathie Berger to join.

Millie Astin, Sidewalks Committee Chair, is in the process of facilitating the submission of paperwork and payments from homeowners who have signed up to replace their sidewalks using payment subsidies from IPNA. New sidewalks are planned for Lake, Euclid, and Colquitt Avenues. Jay Tribby, Chief of Staff for Councilmember Amir Farokhi, is assisting the contractor with the City permitting process.

Chris Curley and Al Caproni represent IPNA as board members of the newly formed Little 5 Points Alliance. This organization brings together representatives from Inman Park and Candler Park, along with owners of L5P businesses and Porch Party

properties, with the goal of making L5P a place everyone can enjoy. The L5PA Transportation and Walkability Committee held a recent public forum to seek input on place-making and mobility. Watch for important project updates from IPNA with opportunities to add your opinion. Other L5PA committees include Security, Beautification, Membership & Development, Programming, and Community Outreach. Go to L5PA.com to join.

Editor Alex Kronmeyer and the Advocator staff all contribute their time to bring you this publication, allowing everyone to stay informed about neighborhood events.

Our Social Committee works to make sure we also have fun, with Pat and Richard Westrick chairing Porch Parties, Carol Mitchell organizing our July Fourth Party, and Cristy Lenz coordinating our Holiday Party and other functions with the help of Ro Lawson. All of these events offer great opportunities to relax with your neighbors.

Speaking of fun, perhaps the busiest people at the moment are our IPNA Festival Co-chairs, Robbie Whyte and Cooper Pierce, and all of the Festival subcommittee chairs and members. If you’ve never volunteered for IPNA, Festival is a great place to start! http://inmanparkfestival.org/

So that’s a part of what IPNA does for you, along with a few ideas about what you can do for IPNA. The Nominating Committee, composed of Natasha Gullett, Neil Kinkopf, and Brian Roof, is always on the lookout for volunteers to fill roles on our committees and on the IPNA Board, so please consider volunteering!

the inspiration for the playwrights 48 hour marathon of isolated furious writing to create four newly-formed

plays all based on the book. It’s free to attend but please reserve your seat in advance.

HIGH on the HogMarch 21 • 7:00 p.m. • Tents at Atlantic Station • high.org/event/high-on-the-hogThe High Museum of Art is hosting an event in support of their annual fundraising Wine Auction. It sounds

like a ton of fabulous food, raffl es, and an exceptional wine lineup. Pricy to attend (tickets start at $150,

what?) but might be a lot of fun and probably worth it if you’re a wine person.

Stage Russia: Anna Karenina Musical screening March 21 • 7:30 p.m. • Emory College White Hall • arts.emory.edu/calendarSo you’ve decided the wine thing at the High is too expensive. How about you do something far more

esoteric and a LOT cheaper ( just $12). Emory is screening a live captured production of Anna Karenina

from Moscow’s Operetta Theatre. If you like your Russian drama, you won’t want to miss this spectacular,

breathtaking, emotional, high-tech production based on the masterpiece by Leo Tolstoy.

lovers discover the interplanetary system wherein Nels Cline, Gerald Cleaver, and Larry Ochs mind-meld

Festival Focus

Butterfl y Ball 2019: A Special Dedication Dance the Night Away In Honor of Oreon MannBy Thea M. QuIllIan • Butterfl y Ball ChaIr 2019

2019 Festival planning is underway, and so is the planning for our yearly kick off extravaganza, Butterfl y Ball. This year we will be dedicating our most festive event to long time Inman Park resident Oreon Mann, who is greatly missed. Oreon was active in the book club which he founded 39 years ago, Inman Park Tree Watch, and Trees Atlanta. He moved into the neighborhood in 1973, and attended every Inman Park Neighborhood Association meeting. Oreon could always be counted on to dance the night away in his Scottish kilt at the Butterfl y Ball.

Butterfl y Ball will be Friday night, April 26th from 8 p.m. to midnight in the big tent on Euclid Avenue. The tent is located on Euclid overlooking Springdale Park between Elizabeth and Waverly. Tickets are $65 per person. The band and entertainment will start at 8 p.m. and continue throughout the evening. There will be an open bar and wonderful food, with a surprise dessert starting at 10 p.m.

This year get ready to eat, drink, party with neighbors and most importantly dance. Bogey and The Viceroy will be back to start the live music earlier and play longer. We’re not giving them a chance for a break (well maybe a little one). Inman Parkers love to dance and the longer the better.

Bold American Catering will once again be providing us with wonderful dinner choices for everyone, including our beloved vegetarians. As the evening continues we will off er a familiar dessert experience. Once again we will have an open bar, yes you heard me right an open bar. We have done away with the pesky drink tickets. The only additional charge will be for bottles of wine. You will only need cash for tipping.

What to wear? Historically the Ball has always been a semi-formal aff air. We only do this once a year. Get dressed up, strut your stuff , show your style and fl air. Embrace the spirit of our honoree and put on some plaid or wear a kilt. Each year is better than the last so go ahead and dress to the nines.

As you know, this event has historically sold out every year and lately within the fi rst week. All IPNA members will soon receive an email invite via the website with instructions about purchasing tickets. You can purchase a maximum six (6) tickets per household. Since we are all Inman Park residents with a neighborhood website, I encourage each and every household to sign up at www.inmanpark.org.

Tour of Homes TicketsAre you ready for another fabulous tour of homes? Have you made plans to tour with your BFFs? Best day for neighbors to tour is on Friday, April 26 during the short/preview tour from 12 noon to 4:00 pm. Streets are open and the houses are not as crowded. You can visit with homeowners and get design/color tips at the start of our legendary Festival. Tour houses are also open 12 noon to 6:00 pm Saturday and Sunday of Festival.

As always, there are three pricing tiers:

Steve Ellison - Inman Park Festival Parade Grand MarshalCoMpIled by Karen HeIM • FestIVal Parade ChaIrperson [email protected]

The Inman Park Festival Parade Committee is proud to announce Steve Ellison as the 2019 Parade Grand Marshal. Steve has been chairperson of Festival Music since 2004, when he took over from George Gary and Christel Sundin Craig. Prior to that, Steve helped out George by doing the sound at the Main Stage, then at the Delta Park stage, and eventually “took over the whole shooting match.”

Originally from Morganton, NC, Steve moved to Atlanta in 1980. While he was in college, he was a member of the committee that organized concerts on campus. He has also been a lifelong musician and has worn himself ragged being the Festival Music Chairperson--as well as playing in a band—a band that has played Festival for probably the last 15 years! Steve feels last year’s Festival may have been his best one. He was “coming off back surgery and was on enough pain meds.” He had stage managers at all three stages, and his band did not play last year, which took a lot of stress off him. It was “the fi rst time (he) was truly able to relax and enjoy Festival!”

Being the Festival Music Chairperson “involves a lot of running about, all weekend long, plus you have to boss everybody around without hurting anyone’s feelings, organize and schedule a whole lot of stuff , always attempting to spend the Festival’s entertainment budget wisely, and ending up with a weekend with a minimum of lame spots in the musical schedule.” Steve, the Festival Committee and the entire neighborhood can attest that you have done us proud and have never booked a “lame spot,” though we might add we do miss the cloggers!

However, the true testament to Steve is his founding of the Atlanta Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund (AMERF), a 501c3 non profi t organization devoted solely to fundraising and awarding grants (for things like rent and groceries, mostly) to deserving professional Atlanta musicians. The funds come directly from donations, and this year, Festival is doing its part to say “thank you” to the musicians of Atlanta--all the proceeds from the “tip” jars at the Festival beer stations and from the orange buckets at the Festival music stages will go directly to AMERF.

Steve’s favorite saying is ‘music really does make the world a better place.”

He certainly has done that as Festival Music Chairperson, and as Executive Director of AMERF, he makes the world a better place for those who make a living making music for us. We salute you, Steve, and we wish you well as you strum off to retirement from Festival and onto your next big jam!

Join us Saturday, April 20th 9 a.m. @ Popular Circle & Euclid to clean up identifi ed problem areas near high foot traffi c areas and homes on tour. Bring a rake, gloves, some yard bags (if you’ve got some to spare), a fully charged cordless leaf blower if you have one, and some water. Eat breakfast and drink coff ee before you come, as this event will not be catered.

Take the time to clean up your own sidewalk and yard before Noon on Friday, April 26th! Festival foot traffi c will appreciate your gesture to expose all potential tripping hazards. If you have a yard service, ask them to come on Thursday instead of Friday.

The City will pick up regular trash, recycling, and yard waste on Friday, April 26th before NOON, when the Home Tour begins. After this, please DO NOT place any trash at the curb. Make sure your garbage cans are not blocking the sidewalk. If you can put them out of sight, even better!

If you know of any problem areas or have questions/suggestions, please contact me. I will be scouting spots on my bike over the next few weeks. Saturday not good for you? I can assign an area to clean up at your own convenience!

It is that time of year again. Festival will be here on April 26th, 27th, and 28th 2019.

In order to have this amazing festival, the best in the Southeast, we have to close some streets.

Healthy Alternatives to Your Favorite Junk Foods That Won’t Break the Bank

by Mary Rose Provence

Article by Mary Rose Provence. I am a current sophomore at the University of Georgia studying the field of Advertising with the pursuit of a Master’s in Journalism. Contact me at [email protected].

Healthy eating is hard. It takes a lot of willpower not to munch on that bag of chips on the top shelf of your pantry or to have “just a bite” of the cookie dough ice cream buried deep in the bottom of the freezer. What makes it even harder is that often times healthy foods tend to be more expensive too. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. Some of your favorite junk foods have healthier substitutes that taste just as good for prices that won’t break the bank.

POTATO CHIPS VS. POPCORN

Potato chips are the perfect snack to munch on while sitting on the couch on a Saturday night watching reruns of Jeopardy. However, their health benefits aren’t so perfect. Potato chips are fried in oil which makes them high in fat. The type of fat in potato chips has been proven to cause high levels of cholesterol and many other health problems. By substituting popcorn for potato chips, you are able to still have a delicious TV night treat with fewer the calories and more nutrients. However, stray away from buttery or flavored popcorn and look for ones that use olive oil or pop them yourself over the stove.

The kernels at the bottom that don’t pop are called “old maids.”

MASHED POTATOES VS. MASHED CAULIFLOWER

Mashed potatoes are a classic American dish. Their smooth, buttery flavor is sure to make your taste buds water.

However, mashed potatoes are high in carbohydrates which can cause

you to feel bloated and sluggish throughout the day. On the other hand, cauliflower is plentiful in nutrients that

potatoes lack. For example, it is high in fiber which forms bacteria

that boost digestive health and lower inflammation. So, next time you’re in

the vegetable section pick up a head of cauliflower to use for dinner and see if your family and friends can taste a difference.

Although white is the most common color, cauliflower also grows in purple, orange, and green!

CHOCOLATE CAKE VS. ANGEL FOOD CAKE

Whether it’s a birthday party, wedding, or just for fun, cake is a universal food that people enjoy all over the world. And here’s the good news you don’t have to give it up completely! Angel food cake is low- calorie, low-fat, and low sugar. It is also high in calcium, a nutrient that helps build strong bones and teeth. Try adding berries or whip cream to it for a little extra flavor. Because the base of the cake is white, a fun tip is to add food coloring to the batter to make it any color you want.

Angel food cake got its name because of its light and airy texture making it a food fit for the angels.

FLAVORED BAGELS VS WHOLE WHEAT TOAST

Most people don’t think of bagels as being junk food items, however; this popular breakfast food is equivalent to eating five pieces of bread plus by the time you add cream cheese or butter it certainly doesn’t help the calorie count. Bagels are low in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients which do not keep you full for long. Eating a piece or two of fiber-rich whole grain toast for breakfast helps lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Also, adding a light layer of natural peanut butter will give you a fix of vitamin E and make you feel fuller for a longer amount of time.

The first documented mention of a bagel derived from a Jewish community in Poland!

CANDY VS. FROZEN GRAPES

The average American eats about 25 pounds of candy a year. Grocery stores make it so tempting to pick up a candy bar as you wait in a long checkout line after a hard day’s work. However, don’t give into the temptation just yet. Grapes are high in vitamin C which is responsible for the growth and repair of body tissue. So, take a quick detour by the fruit section and pick up a bag of grapes, let them freeze for a couple of hours, and enjoy their sweet flavor. If you want a little more flavor, try dipping them in sugar-free Jell-O powder before freezing them.

Experts say red grapes are actually better for you than green grapes because they

contain more antioxidants!

Festival was created to represent this sense of togetherness and complexity using, ink and acrylic colors, blending textures with the use of cross hatch and stippling, in the form of a creature, the butterfly.

Sara’s tagline “Designed for the untamed, inspired by the wild,” truly captures her vision of creating art for people who are layered and unapologetic about being themselves, as you are sure to find in Inman Park.

When not at work in her studio creating artwork, or working on her new greeting card and jewelry line you’ll most likely find Sara gathering her next inspiration from a hike or on a road trip. To see more of her creative designs, check out her website @ https://www.creature-shop.com.

The 48th Annual Inman Park Tour of Homes and Festival will be held the weekend of April 26th – 28th. Live music, fun exhibits, food, beer and cold drinks will be available, as well as plenty of children’s activities and much more will be featured this year. Admission will be free. Tickets are required for the Tour of Homes.

Inman Park has many talented and passionate neighbors who give back to their communities through nonprofit activities. This month we are featuring two events: The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and Lost & Found Youth annual gala. To submit your event or organization for publication, email me! Include any photos you have for extra interest!

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Neighborhood resident Marji McCullough lives at 196 Waverly Way and works at ACS as a scientist; her research is on nutrition and cancer. She is also a co-captain for her department’s Relay team this year. Marji and her husband Dirk are hosting a fundraising event that highlights local artists in their home on Sunday April 14th from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. so just stop in. There will be a small ticket fee to help raise money for cancer research and guests can purchase art either outright or through a silent auction. There will be refreshments and live music. Click here for information on Atlanta relay for life itself: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=93924. Marji may be reached at [email protected].

Lost & Found Youth Annual Gala

Neighborhood resident Patty Durand lives on Sinclair Ave and volunteers at Lost & Found Youth which serves LGBT youth between 18 & 25 in crisis providing food, shelter, and guidance. Patty manages the hotline and serves on the board. This year LNFY will have the 10th anniversary Thriving Children annual gala on May 10th at the Atlanta History Center. The gala is a fabulous evening with a live auction, great music, a fashion show, and a performance by “Cher” (Chad Michaels). If you can donate silent auction items or sponsor a table that would be amazing, or if you want to attend as a guest that would be helpful too. More information can be found at atlthrivingchildren.org. Patty may be reached at [email protected].

Article six on the origins of Inman Park’s street names…

WAVERLY WAYOrigin of name not found. F/K/A Waverly Place and New Street.

PARK LANELocated on both sides of Springvale Park’s eastern boundary. Originally named Spring Vale, the park extended from Edgewood Avenue south to Waverly Way. The portion of Euclid Avenue that now divides the park is sometimes referred to as the “earth bridge.” It was created from fill dirt relocated from an interstate project site in the late 1950s.

HURT STREETFirst listing, as Atlanta’s east boundary, in 1887 City Directory. Joel Hurt developed Inman Park. His cousin Mary Elizabeth Hurt Jones lived, with her family, in the area by 1850. Joel Hurt was likely a descendent of George McIntosh Troop Hurt. The Troop Hurt house is on Degress Avenue.

POPLAR CIRCLEAsa Candler bought the 1.7 acre Poplar Circle in 1880. It was subdivided into (possibly) nine lots. No information found re possibility of poplar trees being on the site or planted for the homes that were built there.
