HONORS AND AWARDS

Lauren (Katie) McClave, a culturalanthropology and Spanish major andpolitical science minor in the CreightonCollege of Arts and Sciences,presented her paper, “The influence ofwomen’s social movements on thelaws against gender violence inBuenos Aires,” at the 2016 HumanDevelopment Conference (HDC) at theUniversity of Notre Dame, February 26-27. McClave was selected through acompetitive process with entries fromcolleges and universities around theworld.

Bethany Abrahams, a third-yearpharmacy student in the Creightondistance pharmacy program, earnedfirst runner-up in the AmericanPharmacy Association-Academy ofStudent Pharmacists (APhA-ASP)National Patient CounselingCompetition in Baltimore earlier thismonth. Abrahams was competing with134 pharmacy students from aroundthe nation. Read full article.

Joe Baronovic, a junior Latin majorand Honors student, has beenawarded a 2016 Manson StewartUndergraduate Award from theClassical Association of the MiddleWest and South. He is awarded a $1,000 awards (accompanied by aone-year membership in CAMWS).Baronovi joins other CreightonClassical Languages majors who havewon this award, such as CarolynConoan (1996), Gwen Gruber (1998),Amanda Kimura (2003), MeghanFreeman (2008), Adam Karnik (2009),Colleen Blosser (2011), RanceFujiwara (2012), and Amanda Swisher(2013).

Two senior Theology majors, Andrew

Two senior Theology majors, AndrewHoltmann and Anna Weirick, havehad their senior research papersaccepted for publication in the Journalof Theta Alpha Kappa. Holtmann’spaper, “The Holiness of Blood andBones: A Systematic Approach to theTheology of Christian Relics,” andWeirick’s paper, “The Wealth ofDiscipleship,” were both directed by Dr.Wendy Wright in THL 492.

JTAK is a peer-reviewed journalpublished by Theta Alpha Kappa, thenational honor society for ReligiousStudies and Theology. With these twopapers, Creighton students will havepublished fifteen articles in JTAK since2000.

The Society of Physics StudentsNational Council has awarded PatriciaSoto and The Department of Physicsan Outstanding SPS Chapter for 2014-15 award. The selection is based on anassessment of the depth and breadth ofSPS activities conducted by theirchapter.

***Rebecca Gasper, Ph.D., assistantprofessor of mathematics, LanceNielsen, Ph.D., professor ofmathematics and Nathan Pennington,Ph.D., assistant professor of

mathematics, along with sixundergraduate mathematics students,Bethany Barber, JohnMangles, Sruti Prathivadhi, MonikaSatkauskas, Samantha Stanleyand Alex Tarter, attended the JointMath Meeting sessions in January. The professors gave presentations andthe six undergraduates presented theirresearch projects during theposter sessions, in addition toattending math lectures and a graduateschool fair.

Jennifer Furze, P.T., DPT, PCS,associate professor, co-director ofPediatric Physical Therapy and director of Neurologic Physical TherapyResidency in the Department ofPhysical Therapy, was presented thecoveted 2015 Stanford Award,bestowed on the writers of amanuscript containing the mostinfluential educational ideas publishedin the Journal of Physical TherapyEducation. Dr. Furze was first authoron both publications mentioned abovethat earned recognition.

Gail Jensen, PT, Ph.D., FAPTA, deanof the Graduate School and College ofProfessional Studies, was joined by Dr.Lee Shulman, president emeritus of theCarnegie Foundation for theAdvancement of Teaching, inpresenting their research team’sfindings and recommendations at the

APTA Combined Sections Meeting inAnaheim, Calif., in February. Dr.Jensen and her research team hadconducted a Carnegie-like nationalstudy of excellence and innovation inphysical therapist education,“Excellence in Education in the HealthProfessions: What Have We Learned?”Dr. Jensen also presented on“Transforming Teaching, Learning, andAssessment of Clinical Reasoning inResidency Education,” “ProfessionalIdentity Formation, Transformation, andMaturation” and “Educational Researchin Physical Therapy: The Good, theBad and the Future.”

Shadows, Creighton’s magazine ofstudent writing and art, won a GoldMedal for 2015 in the yearlycompetition held by the ColumbiaScholastic Press Association,sponsored by the Columbia UniversityGraduate School of Journalism. This isone of many awards won by themagazine over the years.

The case study presentation, “What’sthe Value of a College Degree?”focuses on an integrated project togain a better understanding ofCreighton University student andalumni experiences. Alumni results areinformed by nationally representeddata of the nation’s college graduates(ie., the Gallup Purdue Index). Resultshave implications for qualityimprovement, faculty and staffdevelopment and marketing.

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCHDid you know how geographicallydiverse our students are? The totalstudent population at CreightonUniversity represents 49 states and 57countries. The top five representedstates are Nebraska (28.4%), Iowa(8.3%), Minnesota (7.2%), California(5.6%), and Colorado (5.5%). Threepercent of students are international.The top five represented countries areChina, India, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam,and Kuwait. MAGIS COMMON CORE ASSESSMENT

MAGIS CORE CURRICULUMFACULTY DEVELOPMENTGRANTSFor the fourth consecutive year, theOffice of the Provost will offer MagisCore Curriculum Faculty DevelopmentGrants for 2016-2017 to support theadaptation of existing courses and thedevelopment of new courses to offer aspart of the Magis Core Curriculum.

TIME-OUT-FOR-LUNCHPROGRAMSThe Time-Out for Lunch programsinvite creative engagement amongfaculty and staff to promote acommunity of learners. AEAAssociates and staff work to developand deliver individual and small groupfaculty/professional staff developmentworkshops covering issues related toteaching, learning, and assessment.

Each luncheon program is a 60-90minute session designed to allow in-depth coverage of a topic along withdiscussion among the facilitator andthe participants. Attendees areencouraged to come prepared withtheir questions and ideas for sharing.

Teaching and Learning, Issue Feb.2015, Volume 165, Number 1, thearticle, Classroom Re-design toFacilitate Student Learning: A CaseStudy of Changes to a UniversityClassroom, examines the physicalaspects of a particular universityclassroom, and what effect specificchanges to the classroom had on theperceptions of students, instructors andobservers regarding the room as aneffective learning space.
