Benefits of quitting

When you give up smoking

After 20 minutes Blood pressure and heart rate drop.

After 12 hours The balance of carbon monoxide and oxygen in the bloodstream has returned to normal.

After 2 weeks to 3 months The risk of heart attack decreases. Lungs are working better.

After 1 to 9 months Respiratory problems have started to decrease.

After 1 year 50 percent excess risk of heart disease decreases to half that of a current smoker.

We care about the homeless Helping the homeless is an important part of our job. We reach out to help these members in many ways. Our staff goes to meet these members at shelters, soup kitchens, and other common places. We want to meet these members where they are. We can help them find community programs to meet their needs. If they need social services, we can help with that too. Case managers try to understand the needs of the member and help accordingly. We want to develop positive relationships with these members and to help them move forward with their  lives.

Thinking about e-cigs? Think again Vaping, or using e-cigarettes, may seem harmless. But it’s far from it. A few things you should know before you try it out: • E-cigs contain nicotine.

That’s the addictive chemical that hooks people onto  smoking. • The high amount

of nicotine in e-cig cartridges poses a poisoning hazard. That’s something to think about if you spend time around kids. • Teens who try e-cigs

may be more likely to use tobacco later. In fact, e-cigs are now the most commonly used form of tobacco among youth in the U.S.

• Some research suggests that e-cigs may be less harmful for smokers than traditional cigarettes when used as a complete replacement. But other studies have found that both e-cig vapor and e-cig devices can contain harmful chemicals. Talk to your doctor if you want to quit smoking. He or she can steer you to products that have been proven to  help.

E-cigs remain a risky habit—and not the best way to stop smoking, if that’s your goal.

Get the pneumococcal vaccine What do asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have to do with pneumonia?

Plenty, it turns out.

When you have asthma or COPD, they raise your risk for pneumococcal disease. That’s a bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia (a lung infection). That’s not all. Pneumococcal disease can lead to infections of the: • Brain • Spinal cord • Blood • Ears

These infections can be quite serious. They can put you in the hospital. They can even be deadly.

Avoid the disease The germs that cause pneumococcal disease can spread from person to person. So anyone can

get it. For instance, you could get sick if someone coughs or sneezes close to you. Even people who look healthy can spread these germs to you.

All of this is why people with asthma or COPD should get the pneumococcal vaccine. You don’t need a shot each year. In fact, you may only need to get it once. But there are two different types of the vaccine. And you may need both of them.

So be sure to ask your provider what’s best for you. Remember: Having asthma or COPD makes asking about the pneumococcal vaccine extra important.

Don’t let the flu get you down Flu facts

Germs can travel as far as 6 feet when a person coughs or talks.

Flu viruses can survive on some surfaces for 24 hours.

During the 2016–2017 flu season,

vaccines prevented an estimated 5.29 million illnesses in the U.S.

Your best protection: a yearly flu vaccine.

Nearly everyone older than 6 months should get one.

Benefits of exercise We all can find many reasons not to exercise. It takes too much time; it costs too much; or, it is no fun. Studies show that as little as 30 minutes of exercise two or three times a week is good for your body and your mind.

To start an exercise program, you do not need any extras. All you need is your body. A great place to start is

to put one foot in front of the other and walk. Start slow, maybe even 10 minutes a day to begin and build up from there. Don’t expect miracles overnight. You may never achieve the perfect body, but you will feel better. You will have more stamina. You will be on the path to being healthier.

We cover medicines on our preferred drug  list Aetna Better Health of Kentucky covers the medicines included on our formulary drug list. This is the list of drugs that we cover when they’re medically necessary. We update this list on a regular basis. We will send you a notice about any change that affects you. This list and any updates can be found online at aetnabetterhealth .com/kentucky/ members/pharmacy; and in the Member Handbook, which is also on our website. Aetna Better Health doesn’t pay for drugs that haven’t been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration  (FDA).
