Foyer Display

Take a look at this fantastic artwork on display in the front foyer! 1/2ME have been inspired by the artworks of famous Brazilian artist Romero Britto. The students have combined elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti, using vibrant colours and bold patterns to express feelings of happiness, hope and love. Congratulations to the following students who were chosen to share their masterpieces with me – Johnny R, Harlow M, Josh D and Kaleb W.

Mobile Phone Policy As with many primary schools, students are not encouraged to bring mobile phones to school unless absolutely necessary for safety and security reasons before and after school. Should this be the case for your child, we request that parents/carers send the Principal, Mr Francis, a letter outlining the reasons why their child needs to have a mobile phone at school. The school executive staff and I are drafting a Mobile Phone Policy which will be presented to the P&C at our next meeting on Wednesday, 13th March. It will also be shared with the wider school community via the school app and website so parents can have input into this essential school policy before it is finalised. The main reasons for this policy are that schools need to know that these valuable items are kept in a secure place and that the devices cannot be used for inappropriate purposes during school hours. We also want to ensure that the use of mobile phones do not impact upon our core business – teaching and learning. Thank you to all parents and carers for taking the time to remind their child/children of this important procedure and we will ensure everyone has access to the new policy once it has been finalised.

School Community Charter – Collaborative, Respectful, Communication

NSW public schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that best support student learning. At

Ourimbah PS we strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for. The best education happens when parents and schools work together.

The School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

The key messages outlined in the School Community Charter include –

We treat each other with RESPECT

We prioritise the wellbeing of all students and staff.

Unsafe behaviour is not acceptable in our schools.

We work together with the school.

A full copy of the charter has been included with this week’s newsletter.

Sporting News

There have been a number of Brisbane Water PSSA trials on this week and Ourimbah PS have had a number of talented students represent our school during the trial process. Congratulations to the following students who have all been involved in zone trials –

AFL – James W has made the combined Central Coast team to compete at the Sydney North trials.

Football (boys) – Quinn B, Fletcher M and Linkin P will now compete at the combined Central Coast Trials.

Rugby League – Oliver M, Bailey C, Reef C-S, Brock M, Jasper K, Hunter D and Isaiah J – good luck boys!

Tennis – Linkin P will now compete at the Sydney North trials, well done!

P&C Update – We Want You! The P&C AGM will be held tonight commencing at 7:00pm followed by our Term 1 General Meeting. During our AGM all Executive positions and Committee positions will be declared vacant with nominations being called for to fill these very important roles. If you would like to volunteer for one of these positions, or know someone from our parent community who is eager to be part of the P&C Association, please come along to this meeting and play an active role in the decision-making processes that not only affect your child’s current learning environment, but also form part of the school’s future strategic directions and planning. A flyer with a description of the roles and responsibilities for each position has been included with this week’s newsletter.

Volunteers at our school – Working with Children Laws

Volunteers play an important role in the daily school routine at Ourimbah PS. Please be aware that the NSW Department of Education requires all volunteers to complete a Volunteer Declaration (otherwise known as an Appendix 5) and provide Proof of Identity that meets the 100-point check. We are updating our records in accordance with these departmental and school policies, and ask that anyone who is currently volunteering, or planning to do so in the future, complete the declarations, and return it to the office along with your 100 points as soon as possible.

This not only applies to in-school volunteers but also any parent, carer or close relative that at any stage may be transporting our students to offsite activities (e.g. sporting trials or dance rehearsals).

For parents transporting students to offsite activities please be aware that we still require copies of both your current driver’s licence and current vehicle registration. This documentation must be provided prior to the event. In accordance with department requirements, the transporting of students is not permitted until all documentation has been received. Written permission from the parent(s) of the student being transported is obtained. If students are required to attend departmental activities away from the school site, parents, community members or other students may provide transport to and from the activity subject to the following conditions:

Written permission from the parent(s) of the student being transported is obtained.

If students are transporting other students, written permission from the parent(s) of the driver must also be obtained to not only use the vehicle but also to transport other students.

The driver must be licensed.

The motor vehicle must be registered.

The number of passengers in the vehicle must not exceed the number of seat belts or in the case of larger vehicles, the number of passengers that the vehicle may be licensed to carry.

We thank all families for their ongoing support of this important child protection matter and for your continued support of school activities.

Swimming Carnival – what a splash!

The school swimming carnival was held during week 5 at Peninsula Leisure Centre. A HUGE THANKS to Mrs McLean and Mr Wilson, our carnival conveners, for their wonderful organisation of this year's carnival. The success of such an important event is very much reliant upon the outstanding efforts and team work of staff, students and parents.

Thank you to those families who were able to attend as spectators, and a special thanks to the parents/carers who assisted with official duties – your assistance was greatly appreciated!

Congratulations to all students who competed in their age races regardless of your final placings - you should all be very proud of your individual efforts and personal triumphs on the day! Well done to the 18 swimmers who recently competed at the BWPSSA Zone Swimming Carnival - Shayla W, Tameka W, Harry H, Chloe B, Will C, Jade E, Keira E, Jasper K, Janes W, Imogen S, Sebastian S, Jake B, Giada B, Callum S, Quinn B, Matthew P, Fletcher M and Maya H. A great result - 13 of our students will now go on to represent the school / zone at the upcoming Sydney North Carnival.

Clean-up Australia Day

A very BIG THANK YOU to all of the staff, students and parents who participated in our annual Clean-up Australia Day on Friday 1 March. It was wonderful to see so many students getting into the spirits of this event and keeping our school environment clean and tidy so we can enjoy the natural surrounds that our

Page 4: ‘Endeavour to Excel’ ‘Excellence, Opportunity, Success’ · 2019-10-18 · cleaners (Yvonne and Olivia) and general assistant (John) who work tirelessly on keeping our playgrounds

wonderful school has to offer. We are all very proud of our school environment and the way it is well looked after – we appreciate the hard work of our school cleaners (Yvonne and Olivia) and general assistant (John) who work tirelessly on keeping our playgrounds and gardens looking so beautiful.

My thanks again to Mrs Golding and all of the other

staff who helped co-ordinate this year’s clean-up, and

for teaching our students a very valuable and important

message about conservation and preservation.

Kind regards,

Greg Francis (Principal)

1/2ME CLASS OF THE WEEK!

Wow! 1/2ME have been so busy over the last few weeks and the term seems to be progressing quickly. In the first week together, the students completed their initial assessments. This gave Mrs Miranda and Mrs Elsey a starting point for their learning. The children also completed an author study on Mem Fox and in particular, Possum Magic. The children were amazed to see that Mem Fox has written so many books that they were already familiar with. 1/2ME have since started their differentiated reading, spelling and maths groups, writing plus the other interesting Key Learning Area units. They are already beginning to learn their times tables … look out Year 4, you could have a challenge on your hands from the clever kids in 1/2ME! In History, the children have been exploring the unit ’The Past in the Present’. The children will be exploring the historical remnants in our own school and have been enjoying learning songs across the decades. Don't be surprised if they come home singing songs that parents and grandparents grew up with. In week 4, 1/2ME hosted their first K-2 Assembly for the year. Whilst some children were given the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills at the assembly, others were assured that they would get the chance to present a speaking part at next term’s assembly. All children proudly presented a poem called ‘The School Poem’ and encouraged all of their K-2 audience to sing and enjoy the song, ‘Doctor Knickerbocker’. It was lovely to meet our parents face to face at the Stage 1 information evening. Many thanks for coming along and supporting the partnership between home and school. Full speed ahead, 1/2ME! Mrs Miranda and Mrs Elsey can already see your progress in the short time we’ve had together and we’re looking forward to seeing you shine this year.

SEASONS FOR GROWTH® PROGRAM Learning to live with change and loss Years 5 and 6 Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Ourimbah Public School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called ‘Seasons for Growth’ which will commence early Term 2. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on

Page 7: ‘Endeavour to Excel’ ‘Excellence, Opportunity, Success’ · 2019-10-18 · cleaners (Yvonne and Olivia) and general assistant (John) who work tirelessly on keeping our playgrounds

research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. If you wish your child to be included in this program, please put your reasons in writing and return to the front office by Friday, 23rd March, 2019. This program works with a small group of up to eight students for it to be effective, therefore selection will be a needs based priority. The program will run during school time throughout Term 2 for eight weekly sessions. Parents do not attend these sessions. Parents will be notified before the end of Term 1 if their child will be taking part in the program. Co-ordinators, Mrs Bowd and Mrs English.
