Welcome to my first newsletter as editor. Firstly, I think we all owe Alan Simmonds, our outgoing editor, a big thank you for all the hard work he has put into the newsletter over the last few years, thank you Alan. Thank you too to Alison Harrop and Stuart Mellor for their help in distributing the newsletter.

IntroductionFor those of you who do not know me, my name is Matthew Hoyland, you can see my picture on the front cover, (sorry, with short notice I couldn’t find another suitable picture!) and have been a member of the GBR/CAA since 2001. I currently fly my ZN Line Synergy with YS 160DZ in FAI. Currently building a ZN Line Oxalys base kit that will be using electrons rather than Coolpower.

NewsletterFor 2007 I propose to publish 3 further issues of Aerobatics News: Spring, Summer and Autumn and aim to distribute them at the end of each quarter. As with any publication of this nature it is the quality of the articles received that make it a success. So please do try to send me something to publish, remembering the lead time required so please try to get them submitted in good time. CD’s, please send results, reports and pictures to [email protected].

AGMThe main message from the AGM for those who did not attend was that we have to reduce our costs substantially. The committee is already taking steps, such as the cost of centralised venues and will be thinking radically at the next meeting to tackle this issue. We can all help reduce expenditure to the association; from this issue the newsletter will be available online for all members. Please ensure you are registered on the forum as a GBRCAA member, once registered with your name please email [email protected] to be added to the GBRCAA members group. This will give you access to a members only forum where you can download the newsletter. For those without computer access printed copies can be requested from Stuart Mellor.

The second point we should all be aware of is the renaming of our flying classes, proposed by our PRO to make them more meaningful and hopefully attractive to new members. Therefore Sportsman will now be Clubman, Standard will be Intermediate, Seniors will be Advanced and Masters and FAI to remain as they are now.

Lastly, all pilots should be aware that centralised events and the team trials have been opened up to all classes. A centralised fee will apply and FAI pilots will have priority.

The minutes and the accounts in full can be seen later in this issue.

The Coming SeasonAs I write this the first comp of the season is only 10 weeks away so I hope you have all had chance to get some practice in between the rain showers. A 2007 Competition Calendar is included in this issue, anybody thinking of running a comp please get in touch with Alison and I to get your competition included in the calendar. You can also find a membership application form and competition entry form included with this issue. All forms are also available on the website.

Great Britain R/C Aerobatic Association2006 Annual General Meeting

Saturday 18th November 2006 at the Premier Lodge, Narborough Rd, LeicesterMeeting Commenced at 10.45am. Present: Committee + 14 members + 2 late arrivals.

1. Apologies for absence:- Mike Wood, David Tappin, Nigel Armstrong, Andy and Ryan Prime, Alistair Michie.

2. Approval of AGM 2005 minutes:- Proposed Alan Simmonds Seconded Bob Ailles passed unanimously.

3. Matters arising: - None.

4. Officers Reports:-

Chairman:- Peter Brett read his report -copy attached to this document.

RCPT:- John Mee read his report -copy attached to this document.

SECT:- Stuart Mellor reported that we currently have 101 members compared with 96 in 2005, 22 new members joined this year compared with 2005 when 6 joined, we lost 17 members for 2006 . It is vital that we continue to promote the association at the Nationals and various shows.

Newsletter Editor:- Alan Simmonds read his report. Regretfully he said he will be standing down. He thanked Alison Harrop for arranging the printing and posting of each edition of the newsletter, he would like to ask everyone to support the new editor by submitting articles etc. He agreed to continue as a member of the Web Team.

PRO:- Ashley Hoyland read his report – copy attached to this document.

Steve Dunning stated that some members do not support the PRO in his efforts. He noted that at some of the shows where the GBR/CAA had a stand, members were seen to walk past without any acknowledgement of the work that is being carried out on their behalf, he said it was disgraceful.

Comments came from the floor regarding club talks on Aerobatics. The issue of expenses for those that carry out these talks was discussed. Several suggestions were made from the floor, it was suggested that the clubs should make a contribution towards the expenses. Brian Hoare proposed a vote of thanks to Ashley for all the hard work he has put in this year.

The Wroughton Max Model Show was discussed as a possible venue for next year now that Sandown is cancelled. This would be a replacement, Darren Mee reported that this year’s show was almost washed out on the Saturday but the Sunday was very successful. Ashley said for him to do the Wroughton event he would require a lot of help from pilots and assistance on the stand. A one day raffle has been suggested.

Gary Peacock and Eugene Anker commented on the Wings and Wheels event, the raffle held in 2005 had one prize which generated as many ticket sales as did the GBR/CAA 2006 raffle at that event. The chairman suggested that members should contact the PRO (Ashley Hoyland) regarding ideas for future raffles, they should also contact him about club talks. If we do Wroughton next year we should use the raffle idea from W&W. The chairman asked for volunteers to run a raffle at Wroughton. PRO to report back to the committee with ideas received from members.

Chief Judge:- Bob Ailles no report.

5. Team Selection meeting 2006Sect (Stuart Mellor) summarised the results from the TSM Meeting copy of minutes attached to this document.Chairman (Peter Brett) reported that the attendance to this meeting had been the best turnout for many years and was extremely encouraging.

6. Approval of AccountsTreasurer (Stephen Greenwood) presented all with a copy of the 2006 accounts. General Account Income £3855.37 Expenditure £4711.94 Loss £856.57Competition Account Income £3734.60 Expenditure £4710.42 Loss £975.82Team Travel Income £780.90 Expenditure £620.00 Increase £160.90Balance Sheet Assets Less Liabilities. Provisional Figure (T.B.C) £5613.42

Sect (Stuart Mellor) commented that the net worth of the association shows that we have £5613 but we are really worth £2206.35.

The competition profit and loss account was discussed.Sam Wragg commented that the association is about running competitions and a £1000 loss at competitions is unacceptable and must be addressed at this meeting. Brian Hoare said we should try and use local club sites to reduce the costs. Ashbourne was a typical venue. Peter Brett explained that this issue had been discussed by the committee. The discussion would continue after this report. Ken Moss asked how much the committee meeting’s cost, Stephen Greenwood confirmed that they cost approx £300 although £100 was spent on the Holiday Inn for the interested parties meeting. Steve Dunning suggested that the minutes from the committee meetings should be published for the membership to see what is discussed. Alan Simmonds was against this, there are things that are discussed in the meetings that could be misunderstood. Peter Brett suggested that we should issue highlights from the meetings to appear in the newsletter. This would happen for 2007. Stephen asked CD’s to return unused score sheets as they were costly and would help save money.

It was noted that these accounts could only be approved in principal as those generated by the 2006 raffle required attention. There were some adjustments to be made by both the PRO and the Treasurer before the correct balance could be reported.

This note added after AGM. The accounts reported here show a small profit as a result of the raffle when in reality there was a profit of £302.82. This amount is to be carried forward into the PRO account for 2007. The Association accounts are still to be amended to reflect this and can only be agreed and passed at the next AGM.

Acceptance of accounts:- Proposed Matthew Hoyland Seconded Bob Ailles Passed unanimously.

7. Election of Officers The post of the newsletter editor is up for election, we have a volunteer in Matthew Hoyland, however Allison Harrop agreed to continue to organise the printing and distribution for postal copies. Proposed Bob Ailles Seconded Alison Harrop. Passed unanimously.

8. Committee Proposals 1 & 2 - subscriptions, competition entry fees for 2007Peter Brett read through the proposals.

1. The Treasurer has proposed an increase in subscriptions of £5 & 2. the following increases to comp fees:

Domestic compsSportsman class – no change £5,Standard class - £2 increase = 10 + 2 = £12 5

Page 6: AerobAtics News - gbrcaa.org · Aerobatics News is the official publication of the Great Britain Radio Control Aerobatic Association. The content is determined by the Editor, hence

Senior class - £2 increase = 14 + 2 = £16Masters class - £4 increase = 14 + 4 = £18FAI class - £2 increase = 16 + 2 = £18

Centralised compsFAI class - £2 increase = 20 + 2 = £22

Stuart Mellor Sect is concerned that the increases may drive members away. Sam Wragg said it appeared that all the proposed increases were to fund the Centralised events at Cottesmore. Stephen explained that by increasing the subscriptions by £5 would increase the income by £350. Increased entry fees would bring in an extra £360 and would give us in total an extra £710 per year. He said perhaps we are suffering for not increasing the subscriptions year on year as do other organisations such as the BMFA, even if its only £1 per year.

Steve Dunning suggested that we should be looking at the cause and address those issues. He said we should consider allowing members to download a copy of the newsletter from the website. Peter Brett explained that the committee had discussed this and we will load a copy of the newsletter onto the Website for download my members. He also explained that the committee are very aware of the high cost items such as the cost of centralised events at RAF bases and committee meetings. The committee are trying to reduce these costs. Brian Hoare suggested that if the subscription increase proposal failed then we could increase the membership fee for new members and leave it as it is for existing members. Stephen Simm suggested it maybe possible that less active members would not rejoin if the fees go up. Adrian Harrison said he saw no problem with the increases, this time next year the books have to balance.

Stephen Greenwood (treasurer)said that for every comp entry £1 paid goes to the team travel fund, we have a standard fixed site fee of £35 and then some CD’s then take £50, this make it very difficult to suggested a budget when he as very little control over the outgoing costs. Ashley being a new CD felt that the competition he ran at Gainsborough ,would have costed out well if it had not been re run which attracted some unexpected expenses, although he had forgotten about the team levy. Ashley (PRO) asked what did pilots expect at competitions. Brian Hoare suggested that Trophy’s should be available for Sportsman Standard and Senior only, this would help to reduce costs by about £200 per year. Sam Wragg suggested that a ceiling is put on the judges expenses, Bob Ailles (Chief Judge) replied that the expenses do not cover the running expenses of a car. In fact he is out of pocket most of the time, as are most judges.

Ken Moss said we could talk all day about the increases for Competition entry fees and should take a vote on it without delay. Voting: 22 for 2 against 1 abstention. Proposal passed.

Proposal for competition entry fee increases. Voting: 21 for 0 against 3 abstentions Proposal Passed.

9. Members Proposals & discussion topics1. Bob Wasson’s Proposal Bob Wasson not present, proposal seconded by Adrian Harrison. “That model noise testing and weight testing is dispensed with at Centralised Events, but included in the final Team Selection process”.

REASON/BACKGROUND

We need to encourage participation in Centralised events, both to spread the costs, and to ensure healthy competition. Over the last few years, a number of able participants, many of whom travelled long distances, have had their scores discounted because their models were either slightly too noisy or slightly over-weight. In addition, at a recent

6

Page 7: AerobAtics News - gbrcaa.org · Aerobatics News is the official publication of the Great Britain Radio Control Aerobatic Association. The content is determined by the Editor, hence

Centralised event, it was only possible to fly 2 rounds, partly because of the additional time required for noise and weight testing.

Such outcomes, can only act to discourage the participation we are seeking. On the other hand, Team selection is a serious business and needs to be handled professionally. Whilst most pilots with a real chance of getting on the Team are likely to take personal steps to ensure that their models are legal, the BMFA and GBRCAA should have independent verification that models belonging to Team Members are fully compliant with the rules.

The author believes that the above proposal strikes the right balance between encouraging participation in the Team Selection Process and providing the GBRCAA/BMFA with the assurances that they require.

In practice, either all models could be tested at part of the final Team Selection process, or the ‘winning’ and ‘reserve’ models could be impounded and scrutinised afterwards i.e. a la Formula 1

Proposal DiscussionJohn Harrop said the issue of not running to the rules was not really not up for debate, we have to try and run the centralised events as close to the FAI rules as possible this is a requirement of the BMFA. Adrian said he had observed that it took so much time and reduced the flying time. Peter Brett commented that we are not to slick although we have been doing the noise testing for several years and are pretty efficient at this part. The weighing is time consuming and we should endeavour to begin earlier to allow time for these jobs to take place. Peter Brett informed everyone that the committee would try and make it all run smoother. We have to try and run the competitions as close to the rules as possible to comply with the BMFA ruling. Stuart Mellor said he did support Bob’s proposal but was against disqualifying pilots from the Centralised league table for failing the noise and weight testing. John Harrop pointed out that pilots can still fly at the competition.

The chairman suggested that we now take a vote on the proposal. Voting: 3 for 15 against 7 abstentions. Proposal defeated.

2. Sam Wraggs Proposal Seconded by Bill Michie

Principally the Masters schedule was introduced as a stepping-stone to the FAI Class. At the time it was felt that the current FAI schedules were becoming too difficult? Consequently the step from Senior to FAI class was too great a step up. Currently the degree of difficulty of the Masters schedule is now greater than the FAI schedule. This has defeated all arguments for including this additional class and I propose that the Masters Class be now Dropped and revert back to Sportsman, Standard, Senior & FAI Classes.

Discussion of Proposal Stuart asked why he was killing every ones fun, Sam said it was too difficult and had originally been introduced as a transition to FAI. Ashley (PRO) said when he started to fly it, he felt it was a busy schedule and sounded out the opinion of an experienced judge. There appeared to be no concern for the problems emerging due to the difficulty being closer to that of the FAI schedule than expected. Ashley asked Sam if he would be happy if the schedule was made easier in future he said yes. Bob Ailles added that all schedule’s would be changed at the end of 2007 when the new FAI schedules are introduced with a total of 19 manoeuvres and our schedules should be brought into line with these. Sam was happy with this explanation and withdrew his proposal.

3. Sam Wragg. Proposal The Fly off Schedules to be included at Domestic Comps. No seconder not discussed.

4. Sam Wragg Proposal The committee will look at shortening the schedules to allow more 7

Page 8: AerobAtics News - gbrcaa.org · Aerobatics News is the official publication of the Great Britain Radio Control Aerobatic Association. The content is determined by the Editor, hence

round to be flown at a competition. Proposal was withdrawn in view of the discussion for Proposal 2.

5. Sam Wragg Proposal. Seconded John Harrop.Drop Classes from the Nat’s and just fly Standard Class and FAI. A discussion ensued with Stuart Mellor commenting that it would stop people entering.Voting: 2 for 21 against 1 abstention. Proposal defeated.

6. Matthew Hoylands Proposals.Proposal seconded by Ken Moss The rules and constitution of the association to be made freely available in paper and electronic form to all members.

Discussion took place, Stuart Mellor said that this would be no problem the constitution is available now but as yet the rules have to be finalised. Voting in favour unanioumous. Proposal passed.

7. Proposal seconded John Harrop.

Allow FO-7 to be flown at domestic competitions. 3 rounds of FO, not counting towards the league. I propose this could be done at the Festival of Flight. This allows those that want too, the opportunity to fly finals schedules in front of the judges in a competition environment.

Alan suggested it could be an issue with the judges if the decision was made on the day by the CD. Gary Peacock suggested an amendment to the proposal. Amendment, if you want to fly “F” you must indicate on entry form. Anyone choosing to fly 2x“P” and 1x”F” then only the P’s are taken forward for the comp result.

Voting: 21 for 0 against 0 abstentions. Proposal passed unanimously.

8. Proposal Preliminary, Finals and unknown schedules to be flown at the Nationals and GBR/CAAChampionships. Numbers and weather permitting. Those that do not want to fly F’s andunknowns do not have too, but cannot place above those that chose to do so. We need another competition like Larks a few years ago! After discussion the proposal was withdrawn.

9. Proposal Light rain should not stop any GBR/CAA competition, particularly centralised, Nationals and Championships. This should not get to a level to endanger model or person, and nobody should be made to fly if they chose not too. We need to learn from the experience of those who flew at the Euro’s.

No Seconder. Not discussed.

Ashley Hoyland’s Proposals.

10. Proposal Seconded Adrian Harrison.I propose that we investigate changing the name of some of our classes/schedules: We rename the Sportsman schedule – CLUBMAN

We rename the Standard Schedule – SPORTSMAN or INTERMEDIATE

We rename the Senior Schedule – ADVANCED

MASTERS as now.8

Page 9: AerobAtics News - gbrcaa.org · Aerobatics News is the official publication of the Great Britain Radio Control Aerobatic Association. The content is determined by the Editor, hence

INTERNATIONAL could mean more than FAI to none members. (I always have to explain FAI when I am talking to others).Note: This will bring the titles up to date, to be more meaningful and probably more attractive to new members. There would be no additional cost to the Association as score sheets would be replaced when the old ones are used up.

Proposal discussed

Pete Brett suggested that it could be done and the committee could pursue this. Ashley wanted to see these names changed today. A discussion and vote took place.John Mee commented that FAI should not be changed, this was the recognised name used by the BMFA and CIAM.

Sportsman to Change to ClubmanStandard to Intermediate Senior to AdvancedMasters as now.FAI to remain as FAI

Voting: 19 for, 3 against, Proposal passed.

11. Proposal. I propose that if the CD flies at his own competition that they pay the normal entry fee, but receive the same consideration as none flying CDs. Free membership and they should be expected to claim expenses. Notes: We also need to clarify Scorers expenses. None flying CDs can claim expenses and receive free membership. We should treat everyone the same and as fairly as possible. Should it make any difference if a scorer travels with a competitor?

This was discussed proposal was withdrawn, Ashley to bring to the next committee meeting for further discussion and clarification to the membership.

12. Proposal Seconded Stephen Greenwood. At Centralised events and team trials that prospective team membersget priority to enter, (those who have declared there commitment to fly in the teamif they are selected), but other places should be filled with other classes up to a maximum of 15 entries.Centralised entry fee to apply. Voting: 22 for 0 against 3 abstentions . Proposal passed.

10. 2007 Events : Centralised events, venue, C.D’s 1St 22 April 2007 2nd 13 May 2007 3rd 24 June 2007 Team Trials July 2007 Venue and format and date TBC Pilots and Judges Training day 1st April 2007.

BMFA Nationals: C.D. Two candidates came forward namely Stuart Mellor and Sam Wragg volunteered to do the job, they both left the room for an AGM Vote, Majority voted for Stuart Mellor.Nat’s Entry fee:- Proposal from Stuart Mellor for an increase of £5 seconded Adrian Harrison. Voting: 18 for 1 against 4 abstentions. Proposal passed entry fee will be £30 with the normal £5 registration fee by the BMFA.GBRCAA championships: venue TBC, C.D.Ashley Hoyland or Kevin Caton, Entry fee to-be double the normal class entry fee.

11. Any other business.

1) Discussion topic from Bill Michie. In light of the interesting video of CPLR flying FO7, a short discussion on “Flying the snap” with Judges input might be appropriate. If this is how it’s done at WC level, and many of us have been zeroed for similar attempts in the past, maybe some Judges input would be appreciated!Bob Ailles stated that providing that the model breaks the line and there is a slight corkscrew effect, then it’s a snap. You can’t use the speed of the snap because all models snap at different speeds.

2) Discussion point from Ashley Hoyland.Could we discuss the league promotion system and how it works?

Stuart Mellor explained how it worked and that pilots are free to move into the next class if they feel they ready or they can follow the promotion route and have it on record of their achievements.

3) Discussion topic from Ashley Hoyland. That we elect to have no more than 3 judges at any competition. Two for domestic competitions, and an average of all judges scores should be used. Notes: Much discussion has taken place where judges have marked 5, 6, or 7. Most members have the opinion that judges should mark the manoeuvres from 0 to 10, good manoeuvres should attract a high score, however if four judges are used and the high and low are discarded, by doing this we are condoning the use of 5, 6 or 7 and the scores rewarding the good and the poor manoeuvres will be ignored.

After discussion no conclusion was reached. To be discussed further by the committee, decision then passed on to the membership.

4) Discussion topic from Ashley Hoyland. That we discuss flying sportsman at the Nats.Committee will debate and inform membership of their decision.

12. Presentation of trophies. Trophies presented see trophy list for detail.

13. Date of next meeting:- 1St or 8th December 2007.

Meeting Closed at 4.25PM

Minutes taken by Marion Ailles and John Mee.

PRO Report to the 2006 GBRCAA Annual General Meeting

When I volunteered to fill the post of PRO I did not know if I really wanted to do it or not, twelve months later I still have the same thoughts. The other facts I have to keep in mind that there are committee members around this table who have given years of service to the Association so I should thank them for that. As PRO I would like to thank all members for their support but in particular: The Web team of Alan Simmonds (forum), Matt Hoyland (WEB site, and particularly for keeping news reports up to date.) with John Mee advising, so that I could concentrate on the ‘New to Aerobatics’ section. (I think we would benefit from having certain areas to be answered by the those who have the experience, Judges only for example to answer questions on the schedules. Pointless having guesses and opinions to answer questions on schedules and cut out the chit chat on all headings).

We were present at Sandown, again thanks to those who helped, and I hope those who flew enjoyed the experience. Other achievements include: we have a GBR/CAA banner for use at events, we ran the raffle, I would like to thank all those who sold tickets and helped at Sandown and the Nationals, and to our sponsors for helping us to provide some super prizes, also Robin Gowler FSMAE, who drew the raffle at the Nationals - however the financial results were very disappointing but we did just cover our modest PRO costs. We have had continuous press in the BMFA News, and events publicised in the model magazines thanks to Stephen Simm. Other articles have also appeared in the model press by Steve Dunning, his usual Pattern Precision in AMI and Matt Hoyland, the Nat’s article in R/C Model Flyer.

I did one club talk followed by a standard schedule flying ‘teach in’, which resulted in the negotiations for our new competition field at Gainsborough…….. where it rains.

Thanks to Richard Christopher and Andy Waterhouse for talking the Hanwell club on the 1st November where around 27 members were entertained. I received an email from the Chairman Alan Sweatmen, to say they had enjoyed their evening. We now have two versions of Power point presentations if any one would like a copy to help prepare a club talk.

Just before I ask about next year: One comment from a visitor at the Nationals said “we are here to see if anybody would talk to us about aerobatics” does this reflect the image we have. I did talk to them, and they did join the Association there and then and appropriately one of them won the raffle. I tried to make our presence at the Nationals friendlier and would like to thank Steve Dunning for his help with the visitor’s tent, I hope we can develop this in future years, although I must apologise to Davis Tappin for causing him a problem. This might also be a good time to thank my family, as without them I could not have done what I did at the Nationals or throughout the year as PRO.

So where do we go from here, not much of this matters now as it is next year and the future that really matters, you might know I am passionate about precision aerobatics and I am determined to do all I can to help, but I need your help. So let me run through some ideas quickly.

Can we find a volunteer to write of our articles in the BMFA News, so our exposure to 36000+ aeromodellers continues? I ask for volunteers to generate press exposure.

Would anyone like to organise a raffle for 2007 for our PRO operation, to keep our profile high and the interest continuous.

Do we attend Wroughton this year? Do we have any volunteers?

What do you want to see from the PRO this year? If no raffle then I would like to try and concentrate on club talks but one issue to keep in mind – I will not subsidise Association financially in any way, so how do we pay for our activities.

Ashley Hoyland, PRO

R/C Power Tech Delegate Report to the 2006 GBRCAA Annual General Meeting

First of all I would like to thank Peter Brett for educating me on the workings of the RCPT and its role within the BMFA and his continued help and advice. For those unaware the specialist bodies represented on the RCPT are the:-

BWA (British Water Plane Association.)JMA (Jet Modellers Association.)IMAC (International Miniature Aerobatic Club U.K)AHA (Aerobatic Helicopter Association)BMPRA (British Miniature Pylon Race Association)F5D (Electric) Pylon has now joined the RCPT and will be represented by the BMPRA.

The RCPT committee have had two meetings this year, in April and September, at the April meeting I tabled our proposal for Alison Harrop as Team Manager, after approval she then received final ratification from the BMFA council meeting in May. This was for 2006.Each year the overcrowding of the National’s flight lines are discussed with very little change on the previous year. IMAC seem to be happy to continue with the compound flight line for the future.

At the September meeting our Euro team were each awarded a retrospective payment from the RCPT Team travel fund of £200. This was great fully received. At this meeting we have to nominate our team manager Judges and delegate to the CIAM. The names proposed were Alison Harrop Team Manager, John Mee CIAM F3A delegate, Bob Ailles and David Tappin as Judges in addition Peter Cappleman and Dave Scoles were proposed by the RCPT, all were ratified and now go to the BMFA Council for approval before submission to the CIAM.

We have also applied for funding from the BMFA Team Training and excellence budget for 2007 our proposal is looking favourable, we will have to wait and see if we are successful.

In March 2007 a CIAM F3A sub committee meeting takes place with a final discussion of the 2008 rule book. Last week Pete Brett, John Harrop, Bob Ailles and David Tappin and I received a draft copy of this rule book from Bob Skinner the sub committee chairman together with a small selection of preliminary and Semi and final round schedules, we had a very short time scale to debate these rule changes and select our choice of schedules. I must thank all the above who were involved for their valued input, our choice of schedules and rules change comments have been returned to Bob Skinner. I would have liked a debate via the website forum but time precluded that. I hope to be at the Lausanne meeting for the final vote together with the BMFA FAI delegate.

We were asked earlier in the year via the RCPT to supply an article about RC Aerobatics for a new BMFA booklet “Beyond the Dart”, to be produced by the Education delegate Mike Colling. Ashley sprung into action produced an excellent write up. It’s good that we make these contributions it can only help our cause and attract new members.

The year seems to have been very busy with GBR/CAA and RCPT business, it’s been a pleasure working with the web team, Ashley, Alan and Matt. You will remember we had a major server failure early in the life of the new website. I must thank Alan for his solution against a future failure by ensuring daily backups to his own computer via email. How he comes up with these solutions amazes me.

The forum is a great source of valuable interaction between members and newcomers to F3A.We are watched from around the world and receive a large number of visits on a daily basis, the traffic to our site would be the envy of any organisation and makes it so important that we take extra care with our posts. It’s been a pleasure working with the current committee throughout the year.

Emails to the AssociationGood Afternoon,

We choose May 19th-20th to organise our f3a 2007 criterium at Grandrieu - Sivry.

Thank to avoid that date for your similar organisations.

Best regards Werion G. [email protected]

Ashley, hi again.Just a thought as I have received this morning from Jacques the Cherbourg club’s annual resume of 2006 and their calendar for 2007. Especially as you mentioned your upcoming committee meeting next Saturday.

On the 20th May the MACCH is holding its annual regional F3A competition, an event which I missed last year since we were in the UK. However the thought that some of you guys might appreciate an invite to Cherbourg to participate came to mind.

These regional competitions usually cater for all the French series of aerobatic competitions including of course the Masters class (or International class as they name it). This class should include, Christophe, Benoit and a young flier, Julien Lecoeur, their youngest F3A flier, who came 1st, 2nd and 5th in last years French F3A Nationals. If you think a visit is feasible by a number of you, I’m sure that Jacques would be quite happy to see you there (perhaps with a judge). Let me know and I’ll put the idea to him. Although I’ve mentioned this idea a few times to some of your guys, one way or another it has not been feasible in previous years. Maybe this time, if your own calendar makes it possible?

Regards.Mike.

*Enquires through the [email protected] for the Cherbourg competition.

Proturf – West Stockwith 24/09/2006I arrived at the Proturf field around 3.15pm on Saturday to prepare for our reorganised competition which was rained off on the 13 August. After John Bridgett arrived with the gate key I started to get established. Shortly after I had an unexpected visit from Haden who I now know to be the Farm Manager, I was made well aware of the value of the turf we were stood on and received full instructions for our day, which was mainly what not to do. It was important to follow every instruction if we wanted to have the chance of using the field again.

Sunday 6.30am was clear with little wind, although there had been a couple of unwelcome gusts of wind during the night which rocked the caravan. By 7.30am the mist had descended and moisture was in the air. We did make a start at 9.30am with the odd short break for rain but the first round continued in low cloud during the morning. I think Stuart and Darren had to abort their flight and wait for a cloud to pass before continuing. By the time the second round arrived, the skies were starting to clear making way for a perfect afternoon.

See the results for yourself, but FAI was closely contended with the top two separated by only half a point. Stephen Haywood in Standard was looking for his second set of promotion points for the season and he made it by just one point, congratulations Stephen. After a second long journey for Nick Sprankling, he unfortunately had a servo tray loosen and was only able to complete one flight in Senior; top spot was left open for Darren Mee, who was flying very well anyway. In Masters Stuart Mellor came top of the five competitors even though he was interrupted on one flight by a low pass from (I think) the BB Dekota which got a ten for straight and level flight.

It was good to see Steve Dunning, Trevor Plumb, Brian Gascoigne, Darren Knight and Stewart from the Retford club (who I hope will join us in Sportsman or Standard next year) and two three other visitors who I was able to talk to through the day, including the Game Keeper who showed an interest, but I think he was the most unlikely person I talked to through the day to join us in the future.

Thanks go to our judges for a long day with few breaks, I hope that in time they will forgive me and John recovered quickly after a very short lunch break, and of course to Ken Moss for stepping in to do PCM failsafe checks. A special thank you to Emma who totted up all the scores and relieved me of a huge chunk of the concerns for the day, although the large bribe (a fiver) did nothing for my scores.

I hope we can use this venue again, but next time I must provide mats for the chairs used by the judges who obviously became very excited with our flying and scuffed the turf beneath their feet, and also some protection for the pilot standing area. I think there is also an issue with model fuelling procedures where members leave the tank to vent when filling, and consequently may spill fuel. We cannot allow this to happen on this site and our simple solution used constantly is to have a closed loop system which deposits the overflow back into the fuel container. (There are some advantages to being a tight fisted Yorkshireman.)

May I compliment all pilots in respecting the value of the field and complying with those little extra rules like not running their motors on the ground until they are at tick over and ready to take off. Nick, Tom and Sam were exempt.

Thanks again to all members but mainly to our hosts, James H, Haden and John B for what for me was an excellent day.
