AERODROME SAFETY ALERT AERODROME SAFETY ALERT (ASA) PAGE 1 OF 2 AIRCRAFT JACKING ON ASPHALT STANDS ASA REF:- 02/18 DATE OF ISSUE:- 30 July 2018 EFFECTIVE DATE:- 30 July 2018 AERODROME MANUAL / AOI REF(S):- This Aerodrome Safety Alert has been issued to raise awareness to Airlines / Aircraft Line Engineers as to the potential dangers involved in jacking aircraft on asphalt covered stands. East Midlands Airport has been made aware of a recent incident where, during such an activity the asphalt surface collapsed beneath the jack during the lifting process. As such and with immediate effect, any Line Maintenance requiring jacking of the aircraft on an asphalt stand will be required to adhere to the following procedure. “Any Line Engineer undertaking jacking activity on an ‘asphalt covered’ aircraft stand should, prior to commencing work contact the Airfield Operations Supervisor (07880 787543). An assessment will then be made as to whether the aircraft should be moved to a ‘concrete’ stand or if work may continue in the current location providing a suitable spreader plate is used under the jack during the lifting process”. Images showing the incident and appropriate ‘spreader plate’ are attached to this Safety Alert.
