Sixth Grade News
The sixth grade has recently finished up
the first science and math tests of the year.
We have begun to learn material from the
second chapter for both subjects. In science
we will be learning about graphs and the
types of data that scientist collect. In math
we will be learning about the different ways
to write large and small numbers. We have
finished introducing all components of Daily
Five and we will begin our reading series,
National Geographic within the next week.
Be sure you are asking your student in the
evening to name one thing they learned at
school for the day. We work hard each and
every day to make learning our main goal!
Fifth Grade Findings
The fifth grade classes have been hard at work
this first month! We are working on decimals
and estimation in Everyday Math. In social
studies we have been learning about Native
American tribes in North America. Later in the
month, students will be completing a project in
class about the tribes. We will also be continuing
with the National Geographic in reading. Picture
Day is coming up and will be on September 17th!
The fifth grade class has also been asked to put
up the flags outside our school. They are all very
excited to have this great honor.
Preschool Press Hall/Kler: Remember-Picture Day is next
Wednesday September 17th. Junior Class-If you wish to have your child's picture taken you will have
to bring them in between 8:30 and 11:00.
Hays: We have been rocking in our school shoes in preschool! We love the Pete the Cat stories by Eric Litwin. We are continuing to work on recognizing
shapes and colors. We worked on figuring out what shape had disappeared.
First Grade First graders started RTI this week. The
children enjoy this small group time working on various reading and phonics skills. First grade will be going on a field
trip October 3rd
to Hobson’s Farm in Rockville. There will be many fall activities
that the children can participate in that day. It should be a fun, filled day that the children are looking forward to as well as
the teachers. There will be more information sent home about this event
very soon. Remember picture day is Wednesday, September 17

Fantastic Fourth Grade
In fourth grade we’re gearing up for
our field trips on September 26th
to
Rainsville and September 29th
to
Turkey Run. As a fourth grade we
have computer carts now, so all of
the students have their own lap top.
We’re so excited to be able to use
these on a daily basis, along with
our first e-learning day on Thursday.
In math, we’re continuing to work
on our multiplication facts as well as
introducing division and reviewing
fact families. We’re working hard on
our times tests while working on our
working memory. In language arts,
we’re working on subject verb
agreement. We’re also beginning to
talk about compound subjects.
We’re working on analyzing
character traits and developing
characters in our writing. This is
the second week for Marzano’s
vocabulary. We’re studying
academic vocabulary words from his
book in addition to our normal
vocabulary words. In reading we’re
pushing really hard to make our
Accelerated Reader goals. We’re in
full force with choosing our Daily 5
stations and combining it with CAFÉ
so we can become better readers.
We’re now six weeks into the nine
weeks. Be on the lookout for Pro-
gress Reports.

and keep them home for 24 hours *

for 24 hours without Tylenol or Motrin.
Technology Talk… In the Computer Lab, we have been using our word processor and writing short stories using
“Creative Thinking” with grades 3rd-6th. They are focusing on the format of the document and
following the formatting instructions given. Each grade level had a different topic to write about.
The 2nd graders have also begun using the word processor this week. We typed their spelling list
using a given set of formatting instructions. They had to change font style, font size, use the
centering command, and also use the bold, italics, and underline command. We are
continuing with our weekly vocabulary activity as well. The Kindergarten and 1st grade are still focusing on our computer parts and using the
keyboard correctly. They have visited www.ABCya.com and practiced activities. The 1st graders have visited a website called Dance
Mat Typing (www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr.) This is a great site for your children to practice
keyboarding at home as well. Kindergartners are doing great on remembering the correct names of our computer parts. They have been working
hard on their keyboard practice as well.
From the Desk of the Principal
**Please turn in all fundraisers packets
ASAP. They were due back on September 8. Just a reminder that most
of the fundraiser money goes to field trips for your child. Each grade level
takes two field trips and PTC pays for the gas and bus drivers.
**Remember that we keep all
important dates updated on our new website, www.attica.k12.in.us. If you
click on calendars and filter for only AES you should see everything that we
so far this semester.
**I do want to point out that Grandparent’s Day is now in the
fall. We are inviting grandparents to
join us on October 1. A time and activity schedule will be sent closer to
that date.
**We will be having our parent/teacher conferences on October 20-21 from
3:00-7:00 each night. Forms will be sent home in a couple of weeks.
In partnership with families and community, Attica Elementary School will work to foster a safe and caring learning

PE News My name is Mr. Patton and I am the PE teacher here at AES. I would like to remind everyone shoes are required for PE class students should have a pair to wear on our new gym floor and
refrain from wearing sandals the days they have PE. Also if students are wearing a dress they
need to make sure they have shorts on underneath for gym.
Students have been working on cooperation games and skills stations the last couple of
weeks. We started our soccer unit this week and we will be going outside so students should wear shoes and maybe a light jacket if they have
PE class in the morning. September is Childhood Obesity Month and to
help raise awareness I will be sending home weekly tips every Friday. You can help your child develop healthy habits early in life that
will bring lifelong benefits. As you gain practical tips on helping your kids eat nutritious meals and enjoy a physically active lifestyle, be sure to apply these same behaviors to your own
life. The best way to lead your child to a healthy lifestyle is to set a positive example
yourself. The prevention of childhood obesity starts at home. In an effort to help families the American Heart Association came up with the
EmpowerMEnt Challenge. Here’s how it works: Over four weeks, families across the
country are encouraged to take control of their health by pursuing a different healthy goal every
week which includes eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking less sugar sweetened beverages, reducing sodium intake and
increasing their physical activity-together. Each goal is fun, simple, won’t break the bank and can be done as a family. By the end of the
month, families will be better equipped to live a heart-healthy life Take the challenge is easy and
they will be sharing lots of free tools and materials to help you along the way. Your child
received a Raising Healthy Kids flag to color and sign to join the movement to live a heart healthy life. . For more resources check out
heart.org/healthierkids or The EmpowerMEnt Challenge Event Page on Facebook. When posting about the challenge be sure to use
#LifeisWhy so they can see all of the great things that you guys are doing!!
Avoid smoking and using tobacco products. Be physically active every day.
Eat a heart-healthy diet.
