Acquiring mental skills
The good news is that just like their physical counterparts, mental skills can be developed and perfected. The acquisition of physical skills can be thought of as a three-phase process:
1. Cognitive 2. Associative 3. Autonomous

A. COGNETIVE

•Skill acquisition essentially begins in the cognitive stage with the process of modeling the skill required. •This skill is physical and can be observed and taught.• In particular the use of videotapes and T.V can assist to improve, which perhaps the performer did not even know about. •Yet when the skill has mental components, or is a purely mental skill, you can only achieve so much by observation, the way to really understand the breakdown of the strategy is to ask.• And of course you have to ask the right questions.

So the mental processes that we have obtained must be connected with the physical aspects of the skill, and should go hand in hand with the practice of that skill. During coaching sessions the mental and the physical aspects must be practiced and seen as two sides of the same skill. We do have an additional advantage in the learning of mental skills: they can be practiced and refined almost anywhere. Even on the bus. There is enormous value in repetition and mental skills can be repeated far more and much more quickly. We can take advantage of this by repeating and practicing the skill mentally at a much faster rate than we would perform it in practice.

These 4 C’s in Futsal are generally considered to be the main mental qualities that are important for successful performance

This is the mental quality to focus on the task in hand. If the player lacks concentration then their athletic abilities will not be effectively or efficiently applied to the task. Research has identified the following types of attention focus:Broad Narrow continuum - the athlete focuses on a large or small number of stimuli Internal External continuum - the athlete focuses on internal stimuli (feelings) or external stimuli (ball) The demand for concentration varies with the sport:1. Sustained concentration - distance running 2. Short bursts of concentration - cricket, golf 3. Intense concentration – basketball ,Futsal

YOU ACHIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVEConfidence is the comparison between the player goals and their abilities. Players will have got self-confidence if they believe to achieve in their goal.
POSITIVE AND ENTHUSIASM When players have self confidence they will tend to persevere even though things are not going to plan, firm trust to share in their success and fail.
MENTAL IMAGERYTo improve self confidence, visualize previous good performance to remind them of the look and feel imagine various scenarios and how they will cope with them

3. Control

Identifying when a player feels a particular emotion and understanding the reason for the feelings is an important stage of helping a player gain emotional control. An player's ability to maintain control of their emotions in the face of adversity and remain positive is essential to successful performance.

Anxiety comes in two forms:
1. Physical (butterflies, sweating, nausea, needing the toilet)2. Mental (worry, negative thoughts, confusion, lack of concentration).
When a player becomes angry the cause of the anger often becomes the focus of attention. This then leads to a lack of concentration on the task at hand, performance deteriorates, confidence in ability is lost which fuels the anger - a slippery slope to failure.
Relaxation is a technique that can be used to reduce anxiety.

tension, etc. • The establishing of a physical and mental state which has an
increased receptivity to positive mental imagery • The establishing of a set level of physical and mental arousal prior

4. Commitment ability to continue working to agreed goals

Players performance depends on the player being fully committed to numerous goals over many years.In competition with these goals the player will have many aspects of daily life to manage. The many competing interests and commitments include: work, studies, family, friends and etc.

• A perceived lack of progress or improvement • Not being sufficiently involved in developing the training program • Not understanding the objectives of the training program • Injury • Lack of enjoyment • Anxiety about performance - competition • Becoming bored • Coach athlete not working as a team • Lack of commitment by other athletes
Within the Futsal player commitment can be undermined by:

• Setting goals with the player will raise their feelings of value, give them joint ownership of the goals and therefore become more committed to achieving them.
• Many people (coach, manager, friends, medical ,support team, etc) can contribute to the player's levels of commitment with appropriate levels of support and positive feedback, especially during times of injury, illness and poor performance.

Quotation of psychologist : Logically choosing one of the 4C's to initially focus on ,it would be self-confidence. In your role as a coach have come across with successful players those are very highly motivated and so tend to posses high levels of commitment and concentration and good levels of control. Developing the player's mental approach and how their performance would be improved through an analysis of the 4C's.
