WPFA Philosophy ‘ As well as increased repetition of training hours, Periodisation is used at the Phoenix academy. This is based around long-term individual player development. The focus is to develop players that are both technically proficient and tactically astute who are able to play in multi-positions in a variety of systems ’

Description+of+session:+3+v+2+Transition++

Session Content: - Ball from goalkeeper to outside player. -  Player who’s inside the field must either go on a overlap or

on a diagonal and create a 2v1. -  Once the shot is taken the keeper from defending team

distributes the ball to outside players on his team, therefore the defending now becomes the attacking team.

-  In order to progress with play one of the attackers mus perform either an overlap or diagonal run.

-  The 2 players who were previously attacking move off the field once they finish on goal while at the same time one new player transitions in to defend.

-  If players score they turn around and attack opposite goal whlie two new defenders come in.

Coaching points -  Defending -  Angle of approach -  Intensity -  Pressure -  Cover -  Attacking -  Throwing (GK) -  Attacking -  Passing -  Receiving -  Shooting -  Crossing -  Finnishing -  Timing of runs -  Ability to identify space with and without the ball

What is the Phoenix Academy doing to catch up?

Relating the sessions to the modern game.

Environment is everything

‘ You can have all the facilities in the world but without a philosophy, it doesn’t matter. You can have the best pitches in the world. You can have medical centres and sports science but if you don’t have a philosophy and an identity, then it doesn’t matter ’

Part of the Club’s strategy is to expose players within the academy to the best possible competition available at the youngest possible age. This is monitored on a case by case basis.

Competition Drives Improvement!

The kids at Chelsea know they have to compete otherwise another kid will take there place.

In New Zealand is there enough competition? Who do the players compete with?

James McGarry took part in an experience at Chelsea FC and Sheffield United in 2012

‘ the players do not speak to me ’   ‘ it was more competitive than

I have ever experienced before ’
