SAFE HAVEN ANIMAL SANCTUARY A Better Place For Animals

NEWSLETTER WINTER 2005

SPOTLIGHT: YOUNG VOLUNTEERS

Even our youngest volunteers make a huge difference!BY GINA JENSEN

Last year, after adopting two

kittens from Safe Haven

Animal Sanctuary, we decided

to help foster. My daughter

Geni, then age 7, was a big

help by caring for, playing

with and cuddling our two

foster kittens. All the while,

Geni knew that these kitties

would not live with us forever

like the two we adopted.

I am very proud of her

and applaud how she’s been

able to let go of her foster

kitties by thinking of the

families that are going to be

adopting these kittens.

When one of the kittens

grew attached to one of

Geni’s blankets, Geni cut a

piece of that blanket to give

to the kitten’s new family so

she would always have it.

Recently, Geni won a

brand new bicycle for her

participation in a Walk-A-

Thon fundraiser organized

by her school. Geni thought

it was “a very cool bike”, but

since she already owned a

bike, she thought of a better

use for it. She decided to

donate it to the Safe Haven

Animal Sanctuary 3rd Annual

Silent & Live Auction to help

animals in need. My heart

could have burst with pride at

this gesture of generosity by

my young daughter.

Geni can be seen helping

out at adoption fairs whenever

possible, helping to set up

cages, talking to prospective

adoptive families and helping

to care for the cats and kittens

at the fair.

In this day of questionable

youth experiences, it’s nice to

be reminded that getting kids

involved in a cause early can

start them on the right track.

Geni, I’m so proud of you! To volunteer and help animals in need like Geni and her family, please email us at: [email protected]

VolunteerVOLUNTEER TODAY!

Volunteers are the backbone of SHAS and without them we could not achieve our mission and goals…But being able to directly care for the animals by fostering is only one part of what makes our organization successful. If you would like to help in areas not

listed below, just let us know!

Foster Homes URGENTLY NEEDED Please call or email today.

Adoption Fair Helpers Can’t foster but need your kitty fix? We need help at our weekly fairs with set-up/tear-down, cage preparation, animal socialization, and providing general information to visitors and potential adopters. High school students welcome!

Adoption Center Helpers at PetSmart We need dedicated, caring volunteers to care for and play with the kitties daily at the in-store adoption centers.

Corporate Grants-You Can Help! Does the company you work for offer grants to local community non-profit organizations? If so, our grant volunteers would like to hear from you. Working together, we can secure funding to help the animals.

Trap-Neuter-Return Program Assist our volunteers with managing existing and new feral colonies. Population control is a high priority and volunteers are desperately needed in this area.

“Jack had a few hours to live before Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary rescued him. I filled out an application to become a foster mom…helping foster and save the lives of animals is something I wanted to do.”--- Donna Keyes

SHAS SUCCESS STORY

Jack’s Foster StoryIn May 2005, our family was

blessed with a dog named

Jack. Jack had a few hours to

live before Safe Haven Animal

Sanctuary rescued him. I filled

out an application to become

a foster mom. I was laid off

and had a lot of time on my

hands, and helping foster and

save the lives of animals is

something I wanted to do.

Safe Haven contacted me

Jack lounging at home with Toby

Jack with his new brothers Peter, John, and Joey

with the offer to become a

foster mom. Approximately

2 hours later, I had a little

7 month old puppy by the

name of Jack at my door.

Knowing he had been in a

kennel for who knows how

long, I thought it would take

him a long time to get used to

kids, the cat, the birds, and the

surroundings of his new home.

It took Jack only a

few hours to adjust and

know the rules, like “Don’t

play with the birds!”

Jack was a curious little

guy, always having that

nose into everything and of

course chasing after the cat.

It is now a year later. Jack

is bigger, brighter, spoiled, and

a lot smarter. We decided to

adopt little Jack, who is now

big Jack. He’s a very good dog,

loving and protective. Now,

instead of chasing the cat, he

bathes the cat and they sleep

next to each other. Instead

of barking at the birds, and

trying to play with them, he

now lies down on the floor

and watches them walk by,

with an occasional sniff of

the tail feathers. He does not

bother them, but sometimes

they bother him! He is the

best addition to our family.

We are blessed with Jack,

and I thank Safe Haven for

letting me be his foster mom,

and now, his forever mom.

If you are intrested in volunteering like Donna and her family please contact by email: [email protected]

Special Thank You To Our Foster Homes!

Because of your help fosterering, we were also able to rescue animals from other shelters, including those with special

needs, who would have been euthanized. You helped save their

lives and get them adopted into loving homes.

* Rescued by SHAS from other shelters just before they were about to be euthanized.

3rd Annual Silent & Live Auction rasies over $10K to help animals in needWe had a great turn-out of

participants and donations,

everything from wine to

The weather was

perfect and the pencils were

experienced bidders who were

competing for that very special

jumping dog poster. Other

great hits were the Destino Spa

treatments and the one night

stay at the Valencia Hotel.

The big winners were

Dean and Laurie Beaver,

who spent about $1,500 on

everything from dog food to a

one week trip to Tahoe.

Thank you to all the

volunteers and participants; we

certainly can’t do this without

your support.

We are already planning

next year’s silent and live
