PRESIDENT’S REPORT

On behalf of the Club Committee it gives me great pleasure to present to you the 2011/12 annual report. This past season has provided a significant challenge to the Committee as it has had to pick up a disorganised set of accounts and progressively put in place a soundly placed budget. The loss incurred this year is significant and whilst we have good reserves it is not sustainable into the future. Through the hard work of our new treasurer Jill Watts, we now have a clear set of accounts so that we can actively manage our budget. We can now concentrate efforts on revenue growth and cost containment in a purposeful way, knowing clearly what our financial position is. There are several measures we have put in place to strengthen our financial management into the future. We have invested in MYOB software and a laptop to more accurately and promptly record financial information. We have changed our Auditor to someone who will provide a far greater level of scrutiny and guidance regarding our accounts. We have sourced Eftpos technology to capture more readily payments from the playing group, and on the back of a sound budget have prepared a draft, detailed 2012/13 budget which we believe will provide us with direction that we have not had before. In addition, sponsorship efforts for the coming season commenced immediately following the conclusion of the season and have already generated significantly more revenue and sponsor product than recent seasons. We will also significantly change our Social calendar to respond to the changing interests of our playing group. In a perverse way, despite the deficit, I feel far more comfortable about our financial position than I did at this time last year where we had a poor set of accounting practices. Well done Jill for your skill and resolve. On the cricket front we saw Peter Marshall take over the Coaching role and bring an exuberance and confidence to the playing group. There was plenty of passion and chatter around the group. Peter kept messages simple but he was also prepared to provide direct and useful feedback to the playing group. He continued to have a focus on the development of our younger players and in particular their transition to Senior Cricket. The latter should not be underestimated as so many other clubs manage this process poorly. I would like to thanks the Captains of each of the senior sides. It is never an easy task, particularly with young squads but each of the Captains enjoyed success and it would be fair to say that the First Four X1’s would have performed above expectations. It is worth noting that we continued to field the youngest team in VTCA Senior Division. To finish midfield and to have beaten both Grand Finalists is a worthy outcome for the season. Several players had their best seasons at that level and will no doubt be even better next year. Pleasingly these were all home grown players who, into the future, will be leaders of our club. To finish the last game of the season with 3 16 year olds, 3 20 year olds and a 21 year old is evidence of the youth policy we are pursuing. Congratulations to Adam Pullman and Tim Dale for winning the batting and bowling awards. Tim Dale also took out the prestigious Peter Watts medal for the best First X1 player with Cam Fitchett finishing Runner Up in his first full year with the senior team. I would like to acknowledge the playing career of Andrew Van Den Dungen who has been a very strong first X1 performer for many years. A composed batsmen and classy wicket keeper, we hope to see Andrew around the club in his retirement. The Second X1 under Andrew Coghill had a huge focus on youth this year and were expected to struggle to win games. To be on top at the Christmas break and then to only fall 40 runs short of a finals berth is a terrific result. Congratulations to Shaun Davis and his Third X1 team. They completely dominated the competition throughout the season and were worthy winners of the Premiership. Within that team Gordon Grewcock

3

had an outstanding year and was awarded the Ken Hilton Player of the Year award. I would also like to acknowledge the long career of Marcus Harber who has retired after a long and outstanding career at McKinnon. Always a popular member of any team he played in he went out in style with a Premiership. To Glenn Taylor and his Fourth X1, your season only fell short by a couple of balls in the Grand Final. Playing against a Beaumaris side that had rarely been beaten in the last few years your efforts were inspirational as you fought out 4 days of hard cricket. Well done for a great season. Our Under 17 team followed up last year’s Premiership with another Grand Final spot. Playing what was a representative team cobbled together by Clayton our boys put up a great fight. The cricket was of a very high standard and I am sure that several of these players will don a First X1 cap for McKinnon in coming years. Thanks to Peter Marshall for his leadership of this group and to Jacob Duscher for his Captaincy. Alongside our senior teams this year we had invaluable support provided by Peter Streker. Peter scored for the First X1 but also importantly brought his brilliant thinking on sports psychology to Thursday nights. Simple but insightful messages were discussed and I am sure that he has had an impact on every player who attended a session. Great work Peter. The juniors were again able to draw upon the wisdom and passionate contribution of Rick Pullman. Rick oversaw the Coaching of the junior teams. Our junior program is the envy of most clubs. The Chair of Cricket Victoria and current Cricket Australia Board Member, Geoff Tamblyn, in his presentations around the country, regularly uses McKinnon as a model club in the way we develop and nurture our juniors. Congratulations to the Junior Co-ordinator Michelle Overs on winning the Sandy Sanderson Award for Service to the Club. Michelle took the role over this year, despite her son not being available for club cricket. She took to the role with great enthusiasm and diligence. We were very fortunate to have Michelle in this role this year, overseeing a very large junior program. Well done Michelle and thanks. We continue to field a large number of junior teams. The teams Coaches and Managers should be proud of their efforts in producing competitive teams who play with great enjoyment and who respect the game of cricket that we love. Thanks to all of those who volunteered their time for our junior teams. Some 18 junior players made their way into representative teams from national, state and regional levels. We continue to have a very high representation in this regard and we thank the coaches who develop the skills in our younger players. Our Milo Program had another successful year. It continues to be an absolutely vital part of our junior recruitment. Thank you to Graham and Lisa Hill, Gordon Grewcock and Luke Gale for their work on the program. To the Committee, thank you for your selfless efforts. Ben Charles as Secretary helps out in so many other ways around the club, with wicket preparation, cleaning and rooms maintenance also key tasks he undertakes. Never afraid to take on a task, you never have to worry if it will be completed, you just know it will. Thanks to Amanda Watts for taking on the Social Secretary role. Amanda worked hard to put together a series of social events. Unfortunately the playing group responded poorly and this has created a re-think on what we will do next year and into the future. Thanks also to Ryan Thompson, Paul O’Donnell, Jan Goodwin, Noel Stewart and Glenn Taylor for you commitment to the Committee. Ryan and Amanda also took in Luke Gale one of our young English recruits this year. Thanks for hosting Luke over the course of the season.

The Past Players under the leadership of Ken Dowling and Ken Hilton gained further strength this year, increasing their membership base and hosting another successful function. We value your contribution and the important role the Past Players play in maintaining our connection with so many people who have enjoyed life at McKinnon Cricket Club. Ken Hilton also provided support to our playing group as net captain this year and we value his ongoing commitment to the success of our club. Several other people who I must make mention of for their contribution include Brian Osmond and Chris Whitehead for manning the bar each Saturday, Ken Dowling for his production of wonderfully presented Premiership photos and associated calligraphy to adorn our social rooms, Amanda Thompson and Jill Watts who organised a very successful McGrath Pink Stumps day raising over $1,000 - Amanda in particular for the sourcing sponsors, organising the students from McKinnon High School, along with live music and activities, Shaun Davis and Rod Hemming for their work on entering cricket scores on to My Cricket, and Rocket Davis for assisting with Saturday night BBQ duties. This year Stuart Hamstead again gave up a significant amount of time to prepare the turf wickets at McKinnon - brilliant work, a huge commitment always done without a complaint. Thanks Stuart, you are an outstanding clubman. Thank you to the many others who chipped in with watering and rolling, in particular, Nick Buick, Daniel Streker and Paul Cox. To Lynda Smith and Belinda Griffiths at Glen Eira Council, thank you for your assistance throughout the season. Past President Adam Wilcock, President Pat Quinn and Secretary Russell Pollock, thanks for your sound and professional leadership of the VTCA. The CMCA are also to be congratulated for the continued fine work in administering the Junior competition. Thanks for your support this season. Go Maccas Peter Fitchett President

TREASURER’S REPORT

It is with great pleasure that I present the Financial Statements for Season 2011/12 to the Members. The difficulties in presenting an accurate report of last season’s financials at the last AGM prompted the Committee to address the issues leading to this situation as a matter if high priority. It was found that whilst the results of an audit of the accounts for Season 2010/11 showed that the income and expenditure appeared to be reasonably accurate, the recording and timely management of our funds was not being carried out in an acceptable manner. One of the priorities focused on going forward was to provide a more complete set of accounts. In an attempt to ensure accurate and timely recording of all our transactions, the Club purchased a lap top computer along with a recognised Accounting Software package suitable to our operations. With tighter controls on cash management and the production of monthly Bank Reconciliations and Profit and Loss reports, the Committee was able to gain an accurate view of the clubs finances and have confidence that we were fulfilling our responsibility to the Members in managing their funds. In addition to the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Statement presented in this report, it should be noted that the accrual transactions have been dramatically reduced for this reporting period in comparison to what was incurred in the prior financial year. On a positive note our new procedures have enabled us to produce accurate figures which can be used to formulate our budget for next season and hopefully will give the Members confidence in the Committee. The deficit posted this season can be attributable to a dramatic downturn in attendance at Social Functions and Thursday Selection Nights. Whilst this is disappointing it has enabled us to identify that we need to concentrate our efforts on other opportunities for fund raising. The current Committee has already been working towards this end with well established plans for next Season. I would like to thank the Committee for the support and assistance I received and in particular Peter Fitchett and Ben Charles for their encouragement. GO MACCAS Jill Watts

COACH’S/CHAIRMAN OF SELECTORS REPORT

A very different year at Tucker Road this season just gone with a massive change in structure and many will have formed their own opinion on how the club performed and if we got things right. I know one fact for certain, it wasn’t for the lack of effort and passion that we didn’t quite achieve success if you measure it terms of Premierships, and as I reflect on my first year steering the ship as Coaching Director I am satisfied we are heading in the right direction with the structures in place.

In simple terms one person cannot simply do the job adequately, god knows how Hally and Goughy ever did it, with more planning and guys coming on board for 2012/13 our set up will prove to be the right model to develop and prosper.

Pre season saw excellent numbers which flowed through into the home and away season and training was both varied and enjoyable. I thank Ken Hilton as Practice Captain and Glen Taylor for assisting on Tuesday nights with the book and all the captains who had a hands on role at training. With big numbers especially a lot of development players, training can get frenetic and I felt we gave valuable tuition to all players.

For our club to move ahead a stronger work ethic must occur and it has to be player driven, “that want to improve” attitude has to be instilled and run with by the individual. Already pre season planning is under way and a Winter group has been set up. More feedback needs to be given to players and specialist training undertaken to improve skills and I’m sure with wealth of talent coming through, McKinnon can compete with the “money” clubs.

Our First Eleven is our most important team and must continue to be as our club is marked by how we perform in Senior Division and all senior players should strive to play 1’s cricket. The season just concluded saw us finish 8th with 4 wins 5 losses and 2 draws, having beaten both grand finalists during the season. We also had many lads record their best performances in senior cricket and the games we have put into the Fitchetts, Jeffreys, Alonis, Prices, Duschers, Schwabs, Hemmings, O’Briens, plus a host of others should begin to pay dividends in the coming season. Congratulations to Tim Dale as captain in his first year which was a difficult gig, winning the bowling award and Adam Pullman winning the Batting Award.

Our 2nd X1 had 8 lads under the age of 18 represent them and we shall bear fruit from this approach even though it was painful not to play finals having been in the four albeit one round. Our 3rds and 4ths continue to be strong and we seem to strike the right mix with old and young in these elevens capably led by Shaun and Glen with the assistance from some wise old heads, well done all of you.

A number of initiatives were undertaken this season, first being Pete Streker as a sports psych. with the entire group and his assistance introducing a leadership group which will be expanded upon in the coming season. Secondly the reintroduction of the club song sung after team victories, which was a big winner. Thirdly the adoption of all players owning and wearing their own coloured, numbered and named shirt for game day and training (sense of club and team pride). Little steps indeed but a positive move in the right direction.

On reflection a little bit of an adjustment and learning year in many areas, but rewarding. I felt a huge responsibility in running the cricket operations and I was honoured to be given the opportunity to have a go. I look forward to the coming season as an exciting and challenging period to see how far we can go as a club as the competition in all grades hots up.

I ask for commitment from our senior group, be prepared to work harder, fall into the structures in place, enjoy our success, learn from our mistakes and get on for the journey, as I know come March 2013 we want to be playing Finals Cricket and experience the enjoyment that comes with it.

In closing thank you for choosing to play at McKinnon and with the coaching group look forward to the coming year. Pete Marshall (Director of Coaching)

Senior Captains Reports

1st XI

The First Eleven endured a roller coaster season and with it bought plenty of highs and lows but most importantly plenty to look forward to in the coming seasons. Seventeen Players represented our top side, 5 for the first time and undoubtedly we were the youngest team in Senior Division. Many of the lads had break out years recording their best seasons and opportunity was given to both batsmen and bowlers alike. Tim Dale our skipper won the Peter Watts Medal for the best performed First XI cricketer and also picked up the bowling award. Adam Pullman won the batting award, closely followed by Cam Fitchett and our young overseas player, Luke Gale. Mitch Price stood in for Vanders when he was unavailable, playing four games and did a fine job. The experience will be invaluable for him, the team and club as we move forward. Cam Fitchett, Nick Jeffrey James Aloni all played crucial roles throughout the season and will all improve from the experience of the season just gone. I would like to acknowledge Matt Pearson for his contribution to McKinnon CC over the past couple of years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours at Murrumbeena CC. Special mention also to Andrew Van Den Dungen, who has been part of the furniture at the club for a lifetime and this time I think he has hung up the gloves, bat and band aids for good. He has been a class cricketer and maybe will return at some stage in a coaching role - well done Vanders. It was encouraging to have Ash Streker return to the club and we can only hope he will develop into a top player of the competition, we saw some glimpses this year with both bat and ball. Of course his dad Peter was also a welcome acquisition scoring and mentoring the firsts as well as delivering his professional input to the players in the club - much appreciated Pete. From a stats point of view the team won 4 games, lost 5 and drew 2 having beaten both grand finalists through the year and to be honest should have challenged for the four losing a couple of winnable games, however a young team will experience this in sport. Most importantly the structure is in place and with selective recruiting and development of our homegrown product I firmly believe we can challenge for a finals spot this coming season. The inclusion of English players will continue to be a talking point however when focused, both Gale and Read played team cricket and proved their worth. Thank you to Tim Dale whom took on the difficult job of leading the young team and his cricket smarts and capacity to give all players an opportunity was duly noted. The bus trips out north of the Yarra were legendary, opposition rants were amusing, our wins against the top teams were indeed pleasing and the blooding of youth into the team was most welcoming. The last game chasing down Bentleigh’s 230 declared, us being 0/45 overnight on a road surely could’ve ended in a bright note for the season (washed out 2nd week). All players will take that and other personal and team achievements into next season, a belief that we can compete at the highest level in the VTCA. A commitment to work harder at training, stronger mental approach and improvement in application (skill and technique) will see us finish higher than 8th this season. Well done to all players that represented our club in the Firsts this season, it’s still an honour and privilege to do so. Good Luck for the coming season. Peter Marshall

11

2nd XI

Season 2011/12 presented some new challenges for the second XI. The team was attempting to defend its premiership from the previous year and had the added challenge of fulfilling a developmental role for the wave of talented young players coming through the club. Players who had shown great enthusiasm and promise at lower grades last season and during the pre-season were presented with an opportunity to play second XI cricket and assume important roles in the side from the outset, while a number of senior players from the premiership team moved on to greener pastures. Ryan Thompson moved into a vice captaincy role while I entered my second year at the helm. The team that met close rivals South Caulfield in a round 1 one-dayer had just 4 members of the premiership team and included 3 debutants to the second XI. Batting first the team began steadily and a handy 70 run middle order partnership from the captain and vice captain took the total to 7/143 after our allotted 40 overs. The total then always appeared enough with the opening bowlers performing well and restricting runs, especially the effort of young debutant Lucas Hemming with 3-12 off his first 10 overs with the new ball for the team. A best afield 5-wicket haul from Thompson then continued the good work to land the team a win to start the season. Round 2 at home vs Williamstown CYMS, the team that eventually took out the wooden spoon, saw an amazing turn of events. At one stage we were 9-70 and looking in terrible trouble, that is until Thompson (50) and Hemming put on 70 runs for the 10th wicket to give the team a target to defend. What then followed was simply awesome with the boys rolling them for 40 and 68 in just 50 combined overs. Hemming (5-9) in the first innings and Chris Kelly-Watts (6-18) in the second innings did the damage in an unlikely outright win. We were on top of the ladder already. Round 3 saw the team pinch another win out at Royal Park/Brunswick for the second consecutive year. An even bowling effort in week 1 presented the team with 174 for victory. The target always appeared too much throughout the chase, falling to 8/120 at one stage. Youngsters Ben Schwab (69no) and Regan O’Brien (30) then took it upon themselves to reel in the total and give the team a confidence building win. The club song was sung with great gusto post-game. Round 4 brought the team up against the eventual premiers Hoppers Crossing. Ryan Thompson assumed the captaincy in my absence in a long day for the team, failing to take all 10 wickets for the first time in the season, with Hoppers Crossing amassing 9-261. The run chase never eventuated however with rain washing out day 2 in what would have been a tough ask. Round 5 was rain reduced to a one-dayer at home against Yarraville Club. The game saw a return to the side of former captain Paul Cox with a number of players out unavailable. A reasonably poor batting display saw the side only manage 130 runs from its 40 overs which appeared insufficient given the conditions. At 2-68, the Yarraville chase looked well in control until 3-wicket efforts each from Cox and Thompson at the death got us across the line dismissing them for just 112. The final game before the Christmas break took us out to Airport West St Christophers. An entertaining bus trip had the boys primed for a solid finish to the first half of the season. A lost toss saw us surprisingly put into bat in what appeared to be batsmen-friendly conditions. Young opening batsmen Jacob Duscher found form with his best effort for the season with an excellent 45 runs. Second XI debutant in this game, 14 yo Will Taylor then showed great maturity in a supporting role batting at number 3 managing 24 runs in as many overs to set a platform for the tail. I (53no) and Kelly-Watts (29) then took the total to 9/242 to set-up a likely win. A solid bowling effort then sewed up the win and took the side to 5 wins and a draw and well clear on top of the ladder at the break.

12

The second half of the season then took an astonishing and frustrating turn. Our undefeated team after the first 6 rounds went winless in the last 5 rounds! A belter of a pitch at Beaumaris in round 7 saw us chasing 246 in a one day game off 40 overs. The boys had a great crack at the target but inevitably fell short managing 207. Jarred Fletcher returning from injury through the seconds struck a handy 50 runs for the team. Round 8 on paper presented what would have been pencilled in as a win early in the season. It was top vs bottom when the promoted Greenvale made the long trek out to McKinnon. Thinking quickly changed however when Greenvale batted through day 1 to 9/230. The chase in week 2 was always behind the eight ball and when we were dismissed for 171, the good work of the first half of the season had been well and truly undone. By round 9, the chasing pack was chapping at our heels and nothing short of a win would keep us on top of the ladder. Another horrible start with the bat saw us in trouble at 5-34. Excellent efforts from Thompson (41) and Hemming (55) gave us a solid 185 run total to defend in week 2. In a close heart-breaking finish, missed chances during the day and particularly dropped catches in the final over saw Spotswood pass us 8 down with just 2 balls remaining. The boys were gutted. The teams thinking had now turned from making finals to just wanting to return to the winners list. We came up against St Bernard’s at McKinnon. A good effort with the ball gave us just 145 required for victory however the side’s Achilles heel again proved fatal. The top order slumped to 4/20 and made the chase a dicey one. A great cameo from Cox (59) got us within a whisker of a much needed win but when the final wicket fell an agonising 2 runs short, we had not only lost the game but found ourselves out of the four for the first time all season with just one game remaining. The final must win game was a replay of last season’s Grand Final against arch rival Bentleigh. The winner was to go through to play finals while the loser’s season was over. Another top order collapse at 4/10 set the side a huge task. 60 runs from the captain and a dogged effort from the vice captain (32) got the side to 157 and a defendable total. Unfortunately though, that was to be the last day of the season for the side with day 2 being washed out. The team was to fall just 72 runs or 4 wickets from playing finals finishing in fifth position on the table. I would like to thank all 23 players who played in the second XI this season for your efforts. I can happily say that the post-Christmas on-field failure cannot be attributed to a lack of trying. I’d particularly like to thank my vice-captain Ryan Thompson for his efforts, both during the week in assisting decision making and on game day and I congratulate him on his achievement in being voted runner-up in the club’s Player of the Year award. Thanks also go to Director of Coaching and Chairman of Selectors Peter Marshall for his support and counsel during the season. Once again, well done to Stuart Hamstead for his ongoing efforts in preparing our wickets. Well done too to Shaun Davis and the third XI on their premiership and to Glen Taylor and the fourth XI who went so close to a much deserved flag of their own. Finally, thank you to the club for giving me the opportunity to captain the seconds for the past 2 seasons. I now hand over the reins to this young and promising team to someone else who I hope can build on what we started this season and hope that the younger players move towards leadership roles within the team and inevitably progress to our first XI. Cheers Andrew Coghill

3rd XI My focus on the 2011/12 season began immediately after losing our semi-final to Port Melbourne in March last year. Our campaign had been ended by a high quality outfit, who proved to be slightly too good for us. I recall sitting on the clubroom steps thinking about how we as a team, could take extra step to not only make the grand final, but win it.

After being re-appointed to the role of captain of the 3rd XI, my focus was firmly placed on finishing in the top 2, giving us the best chance to achieve the before mentioned goal. A constant message I communicated to the players each round throughout the season, was to play as a unit, stick together during the tough sessions and cash in when we got on top. To the player’s credit, we were able to deliver on these aspects consistently throughout the home and away season.

The make up for the team was a great mix of old heads with plenty of experience, along with young talent. A great testament of the side was the different names that provided major contributions each week with both bat and ball.

Our season up to the Christmas break saw us on top of the ladder with 5 wins and 1 draw. We consolidated our position with another 4 wins and 1 draw to see us finish well clear on top of the ladder. This meant we had achieved an advantage of getting to play the semi-final at home, whilst putting us in the box seat if the weather intervened. I stressed to the players that this was all it meant though – we still had to go out and execute as we had all season.

The semi-final was an amazing game to be part of. Beaumaris had fielded a strong side, so we knew it was not going to be easy. After capturing 3 early wickets, they had managed to recover then consolidate to 4/151. As all good teams do, we responded by taking 5/28. The days play ended with Beaumaris having compiled 9/195. Marcus Harber was clearly our best bowler taking 5/23 off 16 overs, while Matt O’Donnell was also fantastic in claiming 3/30, including a key wicket of their resistance.

A target of 196 was still going to require a well compiled run chase. All was on track at 1/105, but from that point on, we lost wickets at regular intervals. At 8/180, the tension was building. From this point on, every run was met with a huge roar from the team and supporters. When we lost our 9th wicket, we still needed 8 runs to win. Nick Buick joined Matt O’Donnell at the crease and they steered us to one of the most memorable wins I have been involved in. As the winning runs went down towards third man, the team embraced on the sidelines. The major contributions by Nick Green (63), Gordon Grewcock (42) and Marcus Harber (28) were vital, but with so much pressure on in the final overs, Matt O’Donnell’s unbeaten knock of 21 was superb.

We had earnt the right to play in a Grand Final, subsequently to be played on the main oval at our home ground. Going into the match, I knew it was going to take a massive effort from Cheltenham to beat us.

A day 1 stumps score of 4/126 by us, demonstrated it was hard work. Cheltenham had bowled well to us, making it tough to score. Gordon Grewcock had shown immense patience to bat the entire day and remain unbeaten. In hindsight, this grinding day’s play went a long way towards us being victorious. Contributions from the middle and lower order batsmen saw us compile a hefty score of 298 off 125 overs.

We knew in taking the field that we had the upper hand, and by mid-way through the third day, we had broken Cheltenham’s spirit. After bowling them out for 92, they conceded. It was a weird feeling initially, with the focus on the upcoming 2nd innings no longer required. The realisation of being premiers started to hit. Delivering my post game speech, I could not have been anymore more proud. We had been the best team in the division all season, and been able to deliver in the finals.

Thank you to Peter Marshall for all his support throughout the season. He did a wonderful job as our Chairman of Selectors (one of the many roles he filled). I was also lucky to have great support from our President, Peter Fitchett and Vice-President Ben Charles, along with their Committee. Another who needs to be recognised is our curator, Stuart Hamstead, who puts in numerous hours every week on the wickets.

The final thank you goes to the players who played in the 3rd XI throughout the season. It was an honour to captain you. I would like to recognise each premiership player individually….

Nick Buick – LB returned to the club after having not played for the past 5 seasons. He came into the side at round 2 as our keeper and played every game from that point. As the rust disappeared, he showed how good of a glovesmen he is. His contributions with the bat weren’t huge in numbers, but he will never make a more important 3* than his semi-final effort, steering us to victory with MOD!

Paul Cox – after being part of 2 recent premierships in the 2nd XI, Coxy joined us in the 3s and immediately made an impact, top scoring with 70 in our big opening round win. His experience was invaluable, and he was selfless on a number of occasions wanting the younger guys to be given a chance with bat or bowl instead of him. Although missing out with the bat in the finals, his bowling was first class, with key wickets in both the semi and grand final.

Simon Galloway – Simpo is the type of player every captain wants in his side. A tireless work horse, who gives it his all, he had a great season with both bat and ball. On more than one occasion he came to the wicket and bludgeoned the opposition with quick fire runs. He opened the bowling and rarely let the side down, and was one of our best fielders. His grand final was superb, scoring 42 in a crucial 8th wicket partnership with MOD, and then took 3/19 with the ball.

Nick Green – Greeny had a breakout season with the bat with a top score in the 3s of 85. As mentioned earlier in the report, his knock in the semi-final was a key plank to us winning the game. Rather than go defensive, he counter attacked and keep the scoreboard ticking over. One of the fitness guys at the club, he covered plenty of kilometres in the outfield. His amazing running catch to end the grand final was a fitting way for his season to end.

Gordon Grewcock – how about this for a season, 733 runs at an average of 61.08 including 3 centuries. McKinnon CC Player of the Year, Man of the Match in the Grand Final, 3rd XI Batting Average winner. This was all capped off by Gordo playing in his first premiership at McKinnon. An amazing season by anyone’s standards! The patience and temperament he showed at the top of the order was brilliant, so often his innings allowed us to compile match winning totals, with the grand final being a perfect example of this.

Marcus Harber – one of the elder statesmen of the side, Syd’s contributed consistently all season with the bat and ball. Whether it was getting us off to a flyer with the bat, or coming on and making the vital break through, I could rely on him having an impact. His bowling spell in the semi-final got us back into the game. It is sad that he has now retired, but to go out on his terms and a premiership player is the way to do it. Congratulations on a fantastic career!

Taylor Mancal – Crazy Horse had an up and down season. He is always an x-factor due to his ability to be able to swing a game off his own bat or with the ball. This season was no exception, with some cavalier innings and inspired bowling spells. After being dropped for the semi-final, he earnt his spot back in the side for the grand final and played a major role. A very handy contribution with the bat was complemented by taking 5/26 with the ball.

Lachie McKenzie – after starting the season in the 4s, Lachie took his chance when it presented itself to play in the 3s. His energy and support was superb, an intangible measure that is very much underrated. He did a great job opening the bowling, and produced the ball of the season in round 11 versus South Caulfield, to bowl their opener. His partnership in the grand final with LB was very important, as it put us in an even stronger position.

Matt O’Donnell – a solid season for MOD went to another level as he delivered a sensational final series. His contributions with both bat and ball in both the semi-finals and grand final were huge. The highlight being his unbeaten innings with the bat in the semi, that steered us to victory - a worthy winner of the 3rd XI bowling average (24 wickets @ 9.67), capped off with a premiership medal.

Will Taylor – our most junior member of the side, Will showed maturity well beyond his young age. Upon coming into the side late into the season, he played a couple of sound batting innings, including a very patient knock in the grand final, whilst providing great support to Gordo. He also did a great job when required with his off spin bowling, keeping things tight. With his approach to the game, he earnt the respect of all the guys in the team.

In addition, I want to also recognise all the other players who featured in the 3rd XI throughout the season, with a special mention to Mat Hirschman and Aaron Griggs.

4th XI

Season 2011 / 2012 was incredibly successful despite being unable to defeat Beaumaris in the most thrilling and entertaining game any of us would have played. Under the guidance of Peter Marshall and with the combined support of the Committee and my fellow captains, our Fourth XI was again shaped to accommodate some of our seasoned players whilst giving our younger boys the opportunity to taste senior cricket on turf against some experienced hard heads.

We got our season off and running with a rusty performance against Parkdale United which saw us go down after dropping a number of chances. That behind us, we had comfortable victories in the next 4 rounds. It was pleasing to see the runs and wickets shared amongst a number of guys during this time. Stuart Hamstead, Paul O’Donnell, Nick Leech, Will Taylor and Glenn Taylor all passed 50 while Nick Green made a great 107 against Murrumbeena, a very willing opposition. The wickets were shared between Jay Watts, Mat Hirschman, David Wilson, Paul O’Donnell, Ryan Watts, Stuart Hamstead and first year leggie, Cam Watts. We were fortunate to have great depth and variety in our attack which made it difficult for the opposition. Round 6 saw us lose to Beaumaris, but only just! We could see their weaknesses and knew we’d have them covered when we were to meet again at finals time.

Rounds 7 to 11 brought with it more success. The same boys continued to rack up the runs and take the wickets and Brendan Dawes and Deep das Gupta also chimed in at this time. Our fielding got progressively better as the season rolled on which helped enormously. Phil Gillott was typically sharp behind the stumps which made life a lot easier for our bowlers. Ryan Watts in round 9 and Jay Watts in round 10 both took 5/ and young James Bragagnolo grabbed his late season call up with both hands and made a fantastic contribution to the side at the top of the order for the remainder of the season.

We defeated Mentone comfortably at their main ground in the semi-final. Batting first James and Paul got us off to a great start before a serious collapse which, at 8/126 brought the father and son partnership of Jay and Cam Watts together. They put on an unbeaten 50 run partnership which proved to be the thing that saved us. The following day we made a great start snaring 3 early wickets. We bowled them out for 113 off 67 overs in a really satisfying team performance. The highlight of the day was the outstanding bowling performance by Cam Watts who took 5/31 off 18. It was Cam’s first 5 wicket haul and undoubtedly his best spell for the season.

It was back to Oak St, Beaumaris for our second GF in two seasons. The game went for the entire four days. No time was lost to weather and the match wasn’t decided until the final ball of the 288th - and final - over. Looking past the disappointment, in hindsight we were privileged to be part of such a fantastic experience and I’m grateful I had the chance to share this with the 11 other boys. We played hard but fair and did the club proud. I think we can take much away from this GF, a number of significant batting partnerships; disciplined bowling and inspired acts in the field including a catch close in by Jay Watts and the most amazing outfield catch by James in Beaumaris’ first innings.

In a low scoring match our bowlers excelled. Jay Watts, Ryan Watts and David Wilson took the bulk of the wickets and Cam Watts bowled some excellent spells, largely without luck. Whilst our individual and combined scores didn’t impress, we did occupy the crease for 164 of 288 overs against some good quality bowling. It was rare for sides to survive anything close to this against Beaumaris this season.

Stuart Hamstead and Mat Hirschman batted well in the first innings and Cam Watts showed great concentration and commitment in the second to bat for a long period in tough conditions. As I said this time last season many of these young lads will never play 4th XI cricket again and that is a good thing. They’ve matched it with men and are ready to step into higher level cricket at McKCC. Good luck boys!

It is the work of all those around the club from the President Peter Fitchett down, who I would like to acknowledge and thank. Thanks to the Committee, Suma for his commitment and work on the wickets, Peter Marshall and the other captains. Thanks to our volunteers, supporters and the families of our players.

Sun XI This season we fielded 2 Sunday teams and fair to say it was a battle with numbers fluctuating in a very “different“ competition. Neither side played finals however at times, played really good cricket and had a lot of fun along the way giving some old guys a hit out and unearthing some real talent with some younger lads from the junior ranks, exposing them to turf cricket. Firstly thanks to the Committee and groundsmen (Suma and Ben) for their work on their day off to ensure we played. Thanks also to the captains who always managed to get a team on the ground Simon Kincaid, Graham Hill and the Skelton brothers. Everyone who played and there were over 40 this season, certainly got an opportunity and with more planning and structure next season the Sunday concept is still worthwhile with the wealth of talent coming through. Performances that should be noted are, Graham Hill winning the Laurie Gillott Medal for the best Sunday Cricketer, Josh Dixon, Jacob Stone and Brendan Dawes for their consistent performances. With our excellent facilities we must continue to utilise them on Sundays and I implore players and members to think best how we can structure our team for the coming season. Pete Marshall (Cricket Operations)

T20 Once again the club entered into both the VTCA and CMCA T20 Cups. It was thought that any chance to play cricket should be taken and with the VTCA expanding their competition to include a group stage and our qualification into the statewide cup, we would be involved in at least 7 games during November and December. Our first game was against local powerhouse Bentleigh Uniting in the statewide cup, in which we started strongly but poor fielding meant a large total was set and we were never really in it against a quality side. Big lessons were learnt about how important fielding is in the shortest form of the game. The group stages of both the CMCA and VTCA cups were then played over 5 weeks and for the first time in the clubs history (and probably a rare event in local cricket) we fielded two T20 teams on a Tuesday night. The Firsts traveled to Parkdale and won their 8th VTCA T20 game in a row going onto win another 2 more to finish group winners but bombed out in the quarters. The seconds lost to Mackie's firsts in the CMCA and we went on to finished 3rd in the group not able to better last year’s semi final finish. The club was able to rotate over 25 players through both competitions giving a lot of our list extra game time as well as exposure to T20 cricket. Since October 2010 McKinnon has played 19 T20's for 14 wins, 5 losses and have been champions in the VTCA cup 10/11, CMCA semi finalists 10/11 and VTCA quarter finalists 11/12 a record I hope everyone involved is proud of and keen to improve on as T20 cricket becomes more and more an important part of the cricket calendar. Thank you again to all players and supporters that were involved in T20 cricket at McKinnon this season. I'm certain the club will enter both competitions again, giving more players the opportunity to play more cricket and even the chance of more silverware! Daniel Streker

Junior Team Reports

It is with great pleasure that I present this 2011/12 Junior Report for McKinnon Cricket Club. This season we had eleven junior teams, three under 12’s, four under 14’s and two under 16’s. All the under 14 teams made the finals and the under 14 twilight A team won their grand final. This was a dramatic turnaround for us in this division as it has been a struggle in previous seasons. Under 14C twilight were runners up. The under 12 A team won a lightening premiership competition. The under 16’s were unlucky to miss out on finals, both finished just outside the final four. Enrolment was made easier this season with the introduction of credit card payment on enrolment day. However, it still took considerable effort by the Treasurer and I to collect all subscriptions not paid on enrolment day, and the final payment was received after the season finished. Some consideration should be given to an efficient and timely subscription system. For example, in junior football and soccer a player is not registered until they have paid, so therefore cannot play. Also, the enrolment form should give permission for player contact details to be distributed to other players in the club. This season all junior players received a McKinnon training shirt. Macca of the month was sponsored by Peter Spalding from Mr Burch. The Macca of the month is an award in each age group (U12, U14 and U16) in recognition of the outstanding performance for the month. Mr Burch also donated a weekly award of a milkshake voucher to the three under 12 teams for the most inspiring performance on the day as judged by the coach. Grill’d Elsternwick supplied sufficient hamburger vouchers for each team to award a winner for each week of play for the season. Bentleigh Bicycles donated the prizes for our presentation night raffle. The juniors rely heavily on adult volunteers and it’s great to see so many people give their time. We are incredibly lucky to have Rick Pullman and Paul O’Donnell. Without their time, commitment and knowledge the club could not offer the range and quality of opportunities for our junior players. I would also like to thank our coaches and the parents who help each week, and specifically Bruce Eckersall, Lisa Halasz, Pippa Ross, Karyn Cox who were always willing and available to help me. In the future, it would be beneficial if each team had a team manager responsible for communications and score input for their team. The manager would either input scores themselves, or ensure that the score book is delivered to the person responsible to load the scores, in a timely manner each week. This would improve communication and make individual teams more cohesive. To improve communication between the juniors and seniors I think that it would be beneficial for the junior coordinator to attend committee meetings and receive communications about Committee matters. I have enjoyed the season and I am particularly pleased with the assistance that I have been able to give Rick Pullman. Michelle Overs Junior Coordinator

Under 17

Once again we fielded a team in the VTCA 17’s South division after winning the premiership the previous year. Only handful of boys were eligible to play from last year, however we were indeed fortunate to have Jacob Duscher once again as Captain. Jacob led the team admirably and we played off for the flag against Clayton Districts on the Labour Day holiday in front of a big crowd. The game was of a high standard and we went down by 19 runs, to a very strong team largely made up of “rep” players - our team was 100% McKinnon, of which we were all very proud of. Over 25 players represented the team this year including some old heads and I know the boys appreciated the assistance given. Standout performers included Matt Hirschman, Deep Das Gupta, Regan O’Brien, Will Taylor and Jacob Duscher. Mitch Price did a fine job with the gloves when the old fossil wasn’t keeping and Connor O’Brien opened the bowling all year usually into the breeze and will be a fine player for our club. Many parents offered their services this season to assist and were much appreciated. Mike Lloyd, Kevin Duscher, Rod Hemming, Glenn Taylor and Jay Watts who imparted his bowling knowledge on the group, should all be thanked. The support from the Committee and club especially Stuart Hamstead and Ben Charles (wickets), Jill Watts and Pete Fitchett (amenities) was first class and this concept would not prevail without their effort on their day off, so to speak. I truly believe in this concept and we must continue to be the forerunner in ensuring this division continues as the development of the boys on Turf Cricket is crucial to our club’s survival. In closing the highlight for me was the win in the Semi against our foes Bonbeach and the camaraderie shown amongst the players and supporters alike. Well done lads. Pete Marshall (the oldest 17 year old in the comp) Under 16B Twilight

Whilst the U/16B Twilight team had some great performances throughout the season we probably didn’t achieve our full potential. We believe we had the resources to push any team all the way, but our season was bookended by 2 very close losses, denying us the chance to play off in the finals. We had 5 players score 50’s and posted some big totals against Le Page Park and Ormond. Batting average went to Deep Das Gupta and the Bowling Average to Zak Weisner-Dwyer. Congratulations to captain, Lucas Hemming, on winning the U/16 Excellence award and to Conor O’Brien winning the coach’s award. Thanks to all players for their efforts and cooperation. Special thanks to Peter Marshall and Jamie Dwyer for their training assistance and Rod Hemming for his match day help. Thanks to all others who have assisted and I wish all players moving on from U/16 the best of luck for next year and the future. John Agar Under 16C Twilight

The U16 C’s had a disappointing end to the season after showing signs throughout the year that they could be a real threat to the top teams if they were to make the finals. A win in the final game was required to make it into the 4 but that wasn’t to be. Nonetheless, the guys showed their true quality throughout the season with some exceptional performances with both the bat and ball, with excellent fielding skills also on display it was clear that we had a pretty solid team.

21

Unfortunately a couple of the guys weren’t able to make some of the games due to other commitments which placed more pressure on the rest of team, but as was the case for most of the year they didn’t disappoint with some great individual performances led by Tim Spalding, Tim Walsh, Jeremy Lloyd, Nick Stubbing, Gianni Mercuri and new comer Harry Amner all performing well with the bat and Tom Harkin, Tim Spalding and Kyle Dunstan having great years with the ball. These guys were well supported by the rest of the team both on and off the field. It was great to see some new faces at the club as well and hopefully these guys will continue to play and gain confidence from their performances I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to Peter Marshall, Paul O’Donnell and Rick Pullman for all their help and support in coaching and advice they provided to me either on game day or at training without these guys the club wouldn’t be where it is today. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to both Lisa Halasz for her support on game days and ensuring an accurate score book and also to Mike Lloyd for helping out on match days.

Paul Dunstan Under 14A Twilight

What a satisfying and rewarding season for this committed and passionate group of boys who went on to achieve the ultimate success of a premiership flag! Our squad who included; Will Taylor (captain), Connor Byrne, Cam Watts, Shubaum Bhargave, Jesse Maxfield, William Granter, George Harte, Ben Dance, Dylan Thomas, Aman Prasad, Joel Ludik and Kurt Heigl commenced the season with a convincing win against South Melbourne in round 1 and continued to play team first, high quality cricket for the remainder of the season, defeating Brighton Union in March for the premiership.

Four of the squad were playing their first season in U14s. These boys; Shubaum, William, Dylan and Joel took every opportunity presented to them and proved to be tough competitors and solid supports for their teammates. Our remaining eight, who had previous U14 experience, were prepared for the challenge of top level twilight cricket and provided support and leadership to the group, with someone always prepared to stand up when it was required.

The boys went through the season losing just the two games. They took these defeats in the right spirit, learned something from the experiences and improvements were immediate the following week. Training was always well attended and the boys often took charge with their ideas on how it should be run and what areas of their game should be focus for the session. We were fortunate to have the help of Luke Gale, the club’s English import this season on hand to guide and advise the boys. Luke took to the boys and they to him which I’m sure played a large part in their success.

Half the group played representative cricket this season and each of the six played important roles in their respective sides. These experiences provided the boys with an additional challenge for the season and gave them the chance to meet other boys who they could share their love for the game with.

Our Grand Final success against Brighton Union at Peterson Reserve was the culmination of hard work, dedication and teamwork. We bowled and fielded tidily on day 1, keeping them to 134 off 40 overs. It was never going to be enough and we passed them 5 wickets down with a handful of overs to spare.

I was very pleased for the boys for achieving the ultimate success but probably more proud of the way they conducted themselves over those 2 days. I was often complimented by opposition coaches and parents on how well behaved our boys were – as well as how talented they were! I’d like to thank Jay Watts, Karl Ludik, Ed Byrne and the rest of the parents for their support of the boys and me this season. I’d also like to thank Rick Pullman, Michelle Overs and the host of others around our club who made my job so easy and rewarding.

Congratulations boys and good luck for the coming season. Go Maccas!

Under 14C Twilight

The team for this season was put together with a combination bottom and top age players, but it was clear from the start that we had a talented bunch of lads that we capable of challenging for a spot in the finals.

We had 14 players, and we went into the season with a policy of giving every player an equal opportunity in games. It was great that all the parents understood this policy, and the times when boys had to miss games.

The first half of the season was a bit up and down, with some strong performances, in between some disappointing efforts. However, when the boys put it together, they played exciting cricket. We did have a major problem with gifting extras to the opposition, and this was something that was worked on at training, but continued to plague the team for most of the season.

The second half of the season the team became more consistent, but was sitting just outside the top four right up until the final game. Going into this game, another result had to go our way to sneak into the finals. However, we managed to go close to an outright win, and despite 4th upsetting the 3rd place team, we scraped into the finals due to the lift in percentage from the final game.

During the finals, we were only allowed to play a maximum of 12 players, so two needed to miss, which was very difficult, but a particular thanks to Tom Gamble and Malo Hamon who missed out on selection.

In the semi-final we had a daunting task in coming up against the unbeaten top side. However, due to some great batting and tight bowling and fielding, the boys managed to get past them and deservedly move into the grand-final.

We lost the toss and had to bowl on day 1 of the grand-final, and things could not have started better, the wickets started to tumble and we had them 6 for 37. However, they managed to recover and put a competitive score of 170 on the board, which included the perennial problem of gifting 40 extras. In the second week of the game we started the run chase very well with an opening partnership of 70, but then the wickets started to fall and we were eventually all out 30 runs short of the target. This final result was disappointing and a lost opportunity for the boys. Despite this, the boys had a great season and it was terrific to see the development in their skills.

Thanks to many people who have helped during the year, we are particularly lucky to have a great bunch of parents who are willing to pitch in at any time, in particular thanks to:

The Doyle family – Chris (who kept turning up and helping out despite rupturing his Achilles tendon early in the year) and Rowena for umpiring, scoring and helping out. Also thanks to Sam who was our scorer during the finals.

Wayne Herbstreit and Elliot Bennoun – for helping out each week. Anthony Clarke and Paul Wagland for taking over when I was unavailable. To all the parents who came to games and supported the team throughout the season. There was

always a great group enjoying the warm nights and creating a great atmosphere at games. Congratulations to our award winners: Batting – Jeremy Wagland; Bowling – Jack Fogarty; Coaches – Jackson Doyle; Team – Jonny O’Connor

Finally thanks to Rick Pullman and Michelle Overs for their help during the year.

As coach I was extremely lucky to have been blessed with such a hard working and extremely skilled side. The side was so even in all categories of the game and with their dedication and commitment to training the performances finally paid off with wins after Christmas. In our side we had a number of representative players who all did well for their chosen teams. I believe a lot of the boys from our team will be given a chance to play turf cricket next year and I hope they all move on to U16's or U14's again. Thank you to all the parents who assisted and contributed to the team’s success. Ryan Thompson Under 14B

McKinnon Under 14B team had a great year finishing in fourth position with 5 wins and 2 draws. We lost our semi final against Kingston Saints but it was a great effort by the boys to make the finals. All of the team improved immensely throughout the season in all facets of the game. I was particularly impressed with their batting and fielding. They bonded well as a team and supported each other very well. Brayden was a very good Captain and he was a good example for the boys. It has been a pleasure for me to have been involved with such a great bunch of boys. I wish them all the best in their sporting endeavours ahead and I hope I continue to see them all around the club in years to come. The bowling award went to Sebastien Ernest with 9 wickets at 6.6. Seb’s bowling was very impressive this year. He broke his arm mid-season and only played 6 games. He constantly took wickets at the start of the innings. He moved the ball in the air and off the pitch. Well done Seb on a very impressive season. He also made 82 runs including our only half century of the season. He was a very valuable all rounder to the team. The batting award goes to Nick Braddon with 133 runs at an average of 22. Nick has had a great season and he held the batting together on numerous occasions. He opened the batting most of the year and his ability to hit the loose ball to the boundary was a highlight. His technique has improved and he is developing into a very good cricketer. He took 8 wickets and is a good fielder. The most improved award goes to our Captain Brayden Quin. Brayden improved with his batting, bowling and fielding. He made 60 runs, took 5 wickets and took some great catches fielding at mid wicket. A great effort Brayden. Well done. The coaches award goes to Sam Mack. Sam is very motivated and always gets the best out of himself. He made 77 runs, took 9 wickets and took some great catches in the field. He along with Cameron are very vocal in the field and help keep the enthusiasm going in the field. Congratulations Sam on winning this award. I would like to thank a few people for their continued support throughout the season:

- A big thank you to Michelle for putting in the scores each week and for your correspondence throughout the year. You have made my job a lot easier

- And finally a big thank you to Rick for giving me the opportunity to coach this year. Rick does a fantastic job at the club. He puts in endless hours each week helps out at training, turns up to games. So thanks Rick for all your support.

Congratulations to all four U14 teams for making the finals and Glenn’s team for winning the U14A Friday night Grand Final.

Noel Stewart Under 12A

From a number of wins viewpoint, the Under 12A side struggled in the past season, but this was not a true reflection of how the team performed in what is a very competitive and strong division of the CMCA. After a win in the opening round, victory eluded the boys for the remainder of the season. But this was not for a lack of trying and endeavour, with numerous close games. No better example of this competiveness was displayed in the side being able to win both the CMCA and FDCA lightning premierships! Congratulations to the award winners in the team – Luke Egan (Batting), Katiba Nainhabo (Bowling), William Canning (Coaches) and Callum Drenth (Fielding) Well done to all the boys who played in the side throughout the season. Hopefully the experience gained this season can be built upon.

Under 12D West

I must say it was most enjoyable coaching the boys for the 2011/12 cricket season. During the season we had some great wins and the team as a whole tried their very best every game. Campbell Tweedie took out best bowling, Jacob Gray got best batting award, Stuart Higham got coach's award and Damien Ross Most improved award, though all players contributed throughout the season. A special thanks to all the parents for their help during the season. Without your input and support the boys could simply not play, so thank you. I hope to see all the boys back next season as I think we all had a great time. Peter Ross Under 12E East (Modified)

It was an absolute pleasure to coach the U.12 modified team this season. For most of the boys it was their first season of cricket and throughout the season they displayed good sportsmanship, a great team spirit and a willingness to learn.

The side won just over half their games but more importantly their improvement can be measured by the fact that by the end of the season the number of no balls and wides we were bowling had more than halved. We were taking more wickets and losing less, and after much encouragement and a degree of frustration on my part, our running between wickets slowly improved. I think I can confidently say that all the boys enjoyed the season and hopefully they will all be back next season.

Special thanks to all the parents for their support and encouragement. In particular I would like to thank Shane Austin for his assistance with coaching, umpiring and scoring James Tranter and Steve Harris for their scoring work.

MILO In2Cricket – 2011/12

This season we entertained approximately 30 enthusiastic participants, learning and enjoying the skills and activities based around the game of Cricket. This program continues to be a success. While numbers appear to be relatively small, we do have many programs in the area on offer compared to when we started over 13 years ago. We look forward to continued involvement in this and would love to see some new volunteers assisting the management of this program in the coming years. The program cannot survive without volunteers and we would like to especially thank our program leaders this season - Graham Hill, Luke Gale, Gordon Grewcock and Lisa Hill. All were fantastic!!

T20 Blast

We were lucky enough to be a part of a pilot program aimed at the kids “in between” Milo & formal Junior Cricket. This format uses Milo style balls in a more structured game environment, but ensures all are involved in a quick and fun 16 over format of the game. 6 teams competed all at the same venue each week. While it is competitive it’s not all about winning. We were in a combined team with Carnegie South and Ormond, but by the end of the season McKinnon was 80% of the team. The improvement the players achieved over the program was great to see. This was great fun and this format will be rolled out across Australia next season! Special thanks to Gavin Spitz and Nain Nainhabo who coordinated this on game day.

Girls’ U/12 Cricket

Late in the season McKinnon Reserve hosted Girls’ U/12Cricket, which was coordinated by Cricket Victoria’s Southeast Bayside Breakers. We saw approximately 25 girls competing, learning and just having fun. The format varied according to the needs and there were T20 Blast style games as required. There we a couple of McKinnon CC girls participating and we hope this tradition continues. If anyone is interested in assisting with the programs above, we urgently need volunteers. Feel free to contact Paul O’Donnell on 0418 678 778 or [email protected]

PAST PLAYERS ASSOCIATION REPORT

McKinnon Cricket Club Past Players Association continues to grow as we make contact with more former players of our great club. During the past 12 months, the Past Players Association Committee has continued to be active in establishing the Association. We became an ‘Incorporated Body’ on May, 2011, and following our incorporation, established our own bank account. Our annual luncheon in December was an extremely successful function with approximately 50 members in attendance. Former player Arthur Pritchard was our Guest Speaker, and he provided an interesting insight into his cricket career by producing the various cricket caps he had collected over his long cricket journey. In 2011, Arthur was selected to represent Australia in the over 60’s side, no doubt a great honour for him. It would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the wonderful assistance that Jill Watts provided the committee in the organisation of the luncheon. The luncheon also incorporated our Annual General Meeting, where the following members were elected:

President: Ken Dowling Vice-Presidents: Greg Fitzgerald & Chris Whitehead Secretary: Ken Hilton Treasurer: Adrian Keane General Committee: Gerard Healy Senior Committee Representative: Ben Charles

Ken Dowling does a magnificent job in leading our Association, and his enthusiasm to see the Past Players Association grow and be an important part of the club’s operations impacts on all the members of the Committee. At the luncheon, the Past Players Association had great pleasure in presenting Club President, Peter Fitchett with a framed photograph of the 2010/11 Premiership sides, for displaying in the Social Room. The Past Players congratulates Shaun Davis and his 3rd XI players in winning the South C1 Premiership. They were an outstanding side throughout the season. It is also pleasing that the club was able to win premierships in the Under 14 and 12’s. We would also like to acknowledge Gordon Grewcock in winning the Player of the Year Award. Gordon is a fine cricketer and had an outstanding season with the bat, and is a very worthy winner of this award. To all the other award winners, congratulations on a fine season. The Past Players Committee greatly appreciates the support that we receive from Peter Fitchett and the members of the Senior Committee. Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the past 12 months. We are already looking forward to next season. Ken Hilton Secretary President’s note:

My sincere thanks to the support given me by members of the Committee, particularly Ken Hilton, who has served the Cricket Club so steadfastly for the major part of his life. He has now added service to past players to his busy life serving cricket in a wider way through the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.

SOCIAL REPORT The 2011/12 McKinnon Social Scene in review…. CUP DAY We kicked of the season with a club favourite, Melbourne Cup Day. A function which is entirely run by committee members and volunteers (we’re always so motivated in November.) An unusually quiet day, comparable to previous years, but all in all a good day at the club.

Thanks to: All of the committee, Suma for helping set up, Athol and Jillsie with their carving skills, Rocket with his all powerful knives, POD and Coxy for showing Tom Waterhouse how it’s done on the book and to the ladies who made the delicious salads

W.O.G: Shaun Davis for having a rival function JASON VARGA HYPNOTIST EXTRORDINARE So we tried something different for this function and I think for those who came along enjoyed themselves. Jason Varga may have been a rock-a-billy dude from Cranbourne but he certainly managed to keep us all entertained for the evening, especially those card tricks after the show, Dezy and Murray loved them.

Thanks to: Scaf’s Catering, Benny and JIllsie for helping make the club rooms look like a Vegas Show room and to the willing and some unwilling volunteers who let Mr Varga work his magic on them.

W.O.G: Willo… enough said CHRISTMAS PARTY Ah the Christmas party, a time honored tradition at the club and a great way to end the first part of the season, Coggers and his 2nd XI had the flag in the bag. We kept it simple, we had a bbq and set up the speaker for a “Step Party”, I’m still not quite sure what a “Step Party” is but it was a good night either way.

Thanks to: Peter Warren, the committee, Rocket on the Barbie, and Sooz for the lolly bags.

W.O.G: Myself, for not turning up until the end. McGRATH FOUNDATION “PINK STUMPS DAY” AND LADIES HIGH TEA. “Pink Stumps Day”, what a great initiative from the McGrath Foundation and we were extremely lucky to be a part of it. It was great to see the 2nd XI pink up for the day and get behind a great cause while the Ladies sat comfortably in the club rooms enjoying afternoon tea. A very successful day, we raised $1000 for the foundation and had a ball doing it.

Thanks to: Jillsie for indulging me and driving to Thornbury to get those awesome tea cups and helping me set up the room. Benny and Suma, my interior decorators for hanging pink things everywhere, Jan and Merrin for making the players arvo tea, Karyn, Pippa, Jen and Candi, for your input and support and last but not least the ladies who made the yummy plates of food, the pink food colouring really got a work out that day.

W.O.G: No one … great day $2000 DRAW So we let Abo off the leash to organise and run the $2000 draw, he whipped the players into shape and ended getting a decent turn out. I’m not sure how much money the club raised but J.Mass and Ozzy were happy. A great function at any sports club and one that McKCC does well.

Thanks to: Peter “Abo, Marshy, Fossil” Marshall, the committee, Benny and Suma again for the room set up and everyone who attended.

W.O.G: Jimmy Aloni… you were there.. you saw him.

THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR NIGHT Well 30 years later we thought, “What the hell!” lets have it at the club again! And what a great night it was. Everyone was looking very sharp, even the U17 boys knew how to wear a suit. The room looked like it spewed purple and gold balloons and the young DJ was fired up for the big 1 and half hours dancing at the end (good gig for a DJ). Jay performed brilliantly as MC and everything went off without a hitch.

Thanks to: Noel for his excellent bar work, AGAIN Benny and Suma for helping me set up the room, Jillsie for keeping me calm and running around picking everything up. Jay Watts for his seamless jokes and banter with Abo.

Special thanks to: Rick Pullman, Ken Hilton, Shaun Davis, Peter Marshall, Jacob Duscher, and Laura Watts for presenting awards. Paul Cox and Gordon Grewcock for roasting Syd.

W.O.G: Everyone who didn’t bring their wife or girlfriend… Well I think I’ve waffled on enough, just one more thing, to Jillsie, I don’t know how you’ve done this for as long as you have, your tireless effort and love for the club is inspiring, Big Pete would be proud. Lastly, an apology to Ryan, sorry for talking nonstop (even in my sleep) about the functions we organised at the club and thank you for understanding how passionate I am in seeing the club succeed on and off the field. Cheers Amanda Thompson
