Three Day Classes: Wednesday - Friday, June 14 - 16 Steve Brown: Caricature Carving - Techniques and Tips Over the years, CCA member Steve Brown personally designed many roughouts that he uses in his classes and offers for sale. To add to his vast selection, he purchased Vicki and Phil Bishop’s series of roughouts awhile back. Go to his website www.sbrownwoodcarving.com to see the selection. He’s going to have a lot of roughouts with him but to be sure he has what you want, you may want to get in touch with him at 270-871-4239 or [email protected]. Steve makes sure that you go away from the class knowing how to carve some of the more difficult aspects of caricature carving, such as: carving facial features, hands, wrinkles in clothing, etc. Choose from over 140 roughouts for your class projects. You could complete 2 projects in this class depending on your experience. Painting (finishing) your project will also be covered. Paints and finishing materials will be supplied. Steve’s roughouts prices are between $9.00 - $65.00. Chris Howard: Realistic Human Bust CarvingChris Howard is known for his realistic busts of NativeAmericans, and use of beautiful woods. His students willhave the unique opportunity to learn how to power carve a realistic human face of a man or woman. Emphasis will bestressed on proper proportion, facial anatomy, and the usesand selection of bits for shaping. Chris is offering a choice of projects. Students may chooseto power carve an Eastern Red Cedar wood spirit lamp basewhich will be pre-drilled for ease of wiring. Students canalso choose to do a Native American woman in walnut.Chris will provide parts and instruction needed for complet-

ing the lamp wiring. Student will need to provide their own power carving equipmentincluding a dust collector (a must have item). Wood projects range from $40 to $60.

Vic Hood - Realistic Bust CarvingThe bust shown gives you some idea of what talent this man has in carving realistichuman faces. He sure knows how to make a piece of bark really look good. Need-less to say, Vic ranks in the upper echelon of woodcarving when it comes to realistichuman bust carving. He has won top awards in various competitions throughout thecountry to include the International Woodcarvers Congress.This is a bust class designed to encourage the student to create their own piece ofart. There will be a strong emphasis on design, creativity, and technical execution.The blanks will be life size. The structure of the class allows for beginners as wellas accomplished carvers. Students will be contacted prior to class so that the blankcan be customized to their project. The cost of the blank will be approximately$100.00 depending on the design and size; it will be out of butternut. There will beseveral models available for the students that are not sure what they want to carveand need them for direction or ideas. Gather up a bunch of photos for reference of a

famous person you admire or whoever you think you would want to sculpt in wood and sign up to get Vic’shelp. You will like the results.

Sandy Smith: Caricature Carving ‘Lil CrittersSandy’s Critters are created from 2" x 2" x 3" pieces of basswood. All Critters are sitting with their back feetforward and their front paws in front of them. This is a class that lets students create their own Critter or carveone from Sandy’s existing menagerie of go-bys. Reference materials (mostly dogs) will be available, howeverstudents can bring photos of critters keeping in mind that “all views” (including the bottoms of the back feet)will be needed and that some animals make better critters than others.

Mary and Jimmie Earl McKinzie: Basket WeavingIf you want to try basket weaving, this class is a great place to start. Join us for this class to learn the basics ofbasket weaving and take home 2 unique basket projects: “Treasure Bowls” and “Streamers.” This seminar isappropriate for those who have never woven a basket; and still fun for those with basket weaving experience.We will provide tool kits for your use in class. The materials cost for the 2 day seminar is $45.“Treasure Bowls” is a set of 2 stylish acrylic bowls that can be used tostore your treasures, whether they are coins, candy, jewelry or somethingelse. The clear bowls are glued to a wood base and serve as permanentmolds. You will have a choice of colors for the space-dyed cane that youwill weave around the bowls, and finish them off with a traditional lashedrim. The bowls are 6" and 7½" diameter.

“Streamers” is a colorful basket that could have many uses. It features asolid woven base using assorted colors of spokes and natural fillers. A vari-ety of color choices will be available for the leather handles. The finishedbasket is 12" long, 8" wide and 4" high (without the handles).Mary and Jimmie Earl provide a unique teaching approach, which meanseach student gets extra instruction throughout the seminar. Mary’s love ofbaskets led her to weaving classes, soon involving Jimmie Earl. Now weav-

Sandy Smith: Caricature Carving ‘Lil CrittersSandy’s Critters are created from 2" x 2" x 3" pieces of basswood. All Critters are sitting with their back feetforward and their front paws in front of them. This is a class that lets students create their own Critter or carveone from Sandy’s existing menagerie of go-bys. Reference materials (mostly dogs) will be available, howeverstudents can bring photos of critters keeping in mind that “all views” (including the bottoms of the back feet)will be needed and that some animals make better critters than others.

Mary and Jimmie Earl McKinzie: Basket WeavingIf you want to try basket weaving, this class is a great place to start. Join us for this class to learn the basics ofbasket weaving and take home 2 unique basket projects: “Treasure Bowls” and “Streamers.” This seminar isappropriate for those who have never woven a basket; and still fun for those with basket weaving experience.We will provide tool kits for your use in class. The materials cost for the 2 day seminar is $45.“Treasure Bowls” is a set of 2 stylish acrylic bowls that can be used tostore your treasures, whether they are coins, candy, jewelry or somethingelse. The clear bowls are glued to a wood base and serve as permanentmolds. You will have a choice of colors for the space-dyed cane that youwill weave around the bowls, and finish them off with a traditional lashedrim. The bowls are 6" and 7½" diameter.

“Streamers” is a colorful basket that could have many uses. It features asolid woven base using assorted colors of spokes and natural fillers. A vari-ety of color choices will be available for the leather handles. The finishedbasket is 12" long, 8" wide and 4" high (without the handles).Mary and Jimmie Earl provide a unique teaching approach, which meanseach student gets extra instruction throughout the seminar. Mary’s love ofbaskets led her to weaving classes, soon involving Jimmie Earl. Now weav-

Michele Parsons: Intro to Pyrography - Leather Journal Cover

Have you tried burning on leather? Here’s your chance to do so. Michele Parsonsis a frequent author for Pyrography Magazine. She is also known for her ability toconnect with students and makes pyrography (“woodburning”) easy to learn.

This class will cover the basics of burning using variable-temperature equipment,which is not the same as the craft woodburners that you may be familiar with fromScouts. You do not need to be an artist, if you can trace lines, Michele can teachyou how to burn using patterns. Materials: Leather Journal Cover ($22). Greg Wirtz: Intaglio Relief CarvingIntaglio relief is when you carve the image into the wood surface leaving the outsideperimeter to actually frame the carving. It is a form of relief carving that has be-come very popular in recent years due in large part to Greg’s teaching efforts. Hehas taught many different forms of woodcarving for at least 10 of those years allover his home state of Wisconsin as well as Iowa, Minnesota, South Carolina, Nebraska and many otherlocations. He has been focused on this intaglio form ofcarving for the last few years and has done very wellwith it.

Whether you’re into Santas or want to do a nostalgicscene like the one pictured on the right, Greg has a project for you. The Santa pictured is just one of many different ones he offers, most being full figures, as well as an array of beautiful flower arrangements such as poinsettias or sunflowers.If you want to try something a bit different than “normal” relief carving, give thisclass a try. You will definitely not regret it.

Steve Brown: “Carving on the Edge” - Carve Your Own Face Study StickSteve will be teaching a step-by-step method of carving a caricature face on the corner of a stick of basswood.You will be carving each step separately so when you are done you will have your very own caricature facestudy stick to take home. Unfortunately there wasn’t a picture available to publish, but looking at all the differ-ent and creative faces on his website (www.sbrownwoodcarving.com) you can easily tell the end results of yourstudy stick will be very cool indeed. Materials: $3 to $6.

Denny Neubauer: Forge a Knife Blade out of a Drill Bit!Have you ever wanted to forge your own carving knife but didn’t know where to start? Here is an opportunity to try it for yourself. Denny will take you step by step through thewhole process. You will start with a ¼" twist drill bit and forge it into a carving knife. Youwill be able to shape the blade to the shape that fits your needs.

This includes forging the blade, rough grinding to desired shape, hardening and temperingthe blade and setting it in a handle. Denny will also give you the information on how tomake your own forge and spend extra time on sharpening tools.
