Had ‘the talk’
yet?
As a parent, there’s a lot of ‘talks’. There’s the big one, of course. And then there’s the gambling one, the one you have
because many teens mistakenly think that betting is a normal part of the game. Help your kids understand the risks.

An important step forwardAFL Victoria will take an important step forward as an organisation at the MCG this Sunday when we launch our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).The RAP is part of AFL Victoria’s commitment to increasing awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements to clubs, leagues, schools, local government and community organisations across the state.
It’s a significant document that ensures Victoria’s indigenous culture and heritage is at the forefront of everything we do at all levels of AFL Victoria.
The RAP focuses on a number of key areas we are already invested in as an organisation, including a commitment to increase the overall level of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in our game as players, coaches and umpires; creating more employment opportunities for indigenous people; and continuing to build understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customs, values and traditions through education and Community Football and Indigenous Round celebrations.
AFL Victoria’s Diversity team and RAP committee – featuring staff from across our organisation – have been working on the plan since last year, and its launch coincides with the Round 3 NAB AFL U18 Championships clash between Vic Country and Vic Metro. The annual clash will feature some of the best under-18 TAC Cup talent from across the state, showcasing their skills at a venue they will all hope to play at more regularly in the future as AFL players.
The traditional Big V guernseys will take on a diff erent look for both sides, featuring an indigenous design to coincide with the RAP launch. The design has been produced by former Kickstart member and current Eastern Ranges player Todd Garner, the brother of 2017 Port Adelaide draft ee Joel Garner.
Joel will be at the MCG on Sunday along with North Melbourne’s Jy Simpkin, with the two former Metro and Country players assisting in presenting the guernseys to each side pre-game. On the ground, a Welcome To Country and smoking ceremony will take place, highlighting our commitment to make an Acknowledgement of Country at all major staff meetings and starting major events with a Welcome To Country.

BOX HILL HAWKS vs ESSENDON – Sunday 2.10pm @ Box Hill City Oval
[LIVE on Channel 7 / 3WBC radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 17 @ Windy Hill: Essendon 14.5 (89) d Box Hill Hawks 12.11 (83)
FORM COMING INBox Hill (5th, 6-3) ended a two-game losing slide with a 63-point victory over Frankston last week. Essendon (4th, 6-3) bounced back from a Round 9 loss to Footscray by defeating Coburg to the tune of 94 points two weeks ago.
KEY QUESTIONWhat will we learn about the Hawks? Box Hill has only played one current top-eight team since Round 1, which ended in a 39-point loss to the Casey Demons. This game kicks off a month of potential finals-shaping contests when the Hawks face Richmond, Footscray and then Port Melbourne. For their part, the Bombers are 1-2 against current top-eight teams.
KEY STATBoth these teams rank in the VFL’s top six for uncontested possessions, uncontested marks, inside-50s and goals per game, so controlling the ball on the outside is working for them. Essendon, however, averages 13 more uncontested possessions and four more clearances than Box Hill, and the contests might be where this game is won.
V
Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 12Peter Jackson VFL Round 12 features two games with potentially big implications for the make-up of the top four (Box Hill Hawks vs Essendon) and top eight (Footscray vs North Melbourne) come season’s end.
FOOTSCRAY vs NORTH MELBOURNE – Saturday 3.20pm @ Etihad Stadium
LAST ENCOUNTERNever played
FORM COMING INFootscray (9th, 5-4) is coming off back-to-back wins against Essendon and then Coburg by 10 points last week. North Melbourne (10th, 5-4) was in fine form before its three-game winning streak abruptly ended with a 100-point loss to Geelong two weeks ago.
KEY QUESTIONWho wants a finals spot? It’s only just past the halfway mark of the H&A season, but this match could determine who has the best shot of breaking into the top eight. Both teams can certainly match it with contenders, the Bulldogs having knocked off Richmond and Essendon and the Kangaroos beating the Box Hill Hawks and Port Melbourne.
KEY STATThe VFL’s top two ruck divisions for hitouts per game face off in this match, with top-ranked Footscray likely to pit Jordan Roughead and Tom Campbell against North Melbourne’s Braydon Preuss. The Bulldogs seem to convert their ruck dominance into clearances better than the Kangaroos though, generating almost eight more per game.

* ROUND 12 BYE – Geelong, Port Melbourne, Richmond, Sandringham and Williamstown
CASEY DEMONS vs COBURG – Saturday 1pm @ Casey Fields[vfl.com.au video stream / VFL Live]
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 1 @ Piranha Park: Casey Demons 28.12 (180) d Coburg 11.7 (73)
FORM COMING INThe Demons (2nd, 7-2) are arguably the VFL’s form team, a 23-point defeat of Collingwood two weeks ago giving them five wins in a row. A 10-point loss to Footscray last week was the closest Coburg (15th, 0-10) has got to an opposition team this year.
KEY QUESTION Do the Lions have an answer for Casey’s depth of ball-winners? In Round 1 the Demons won 116 more disposals than Coburg, but the Lions demonstrated their own ability to win the ball in recording 86 more disposals against the Bulldogs in Round 11. Marcus Lentini (37 disposals last week) and Nick Mellington (25) need to step up again.
KEY STATThe Lions must find a way to hit the scoreboard when opportunities present, because the Demons are the VFL’s second-ranked team for goals scored per inside-50 (27 per cent eff iciency) thanks to the likes of Harley Balic (15 goals in 2018), Tom Bugg (14) and Angus Scott (13). In contrast, Coburg ranks last on that measure (19 per cent).
FRANKSTON vs WERRIBEE – Sunday 2pm @ SkyBus Stadium[LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2016 Rd 2 @ SkyBus Stadium: Werribee 15.11 (101) d Frankston 10.3 (63)
FORM COMING INFrankston (13th, 2-8) has lost four straight games aft er going down to the Box Hill Hawks by 63 points last week. Werribee (12th, 2-7) has been unable to produce back-to-back wins, losing to Port Melbourne by 78 points in Round 10 a week aft er knocking off Box Hill.
KEY QUESTIONIs this a virtual Young Guns Game? The third match in AFL Victoria’s Young Guns Series isn’t until next week, but there’ll be plenty of young talent worth watching in this clash despite the teams’ poor records. Frankston’s Jack McHale and Corey Rich as well as Werribee’s Keegan Gray and Cassidy Parish all played in the most recent Young Guns game.
KEY STATThe area in which the Tigers may have an advantage is in keeping control of the ball, ranking sixth in the VFL for average marks – and third for contested marks – compared to the 14th-ranked Dolphins. Werribee’s bookends of Sam Collins in defence and Josh Corbett in attack rank first and third in the competition respectively for total marks.
V
V
COLLINGWOOD vs NORTHERN BLUES – Sunday 11.30am @ Olympic Park Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 1 @ Preston City Oval: Collingwood 31.15 (201) d Northern Blues 11.5 (71)
FORM COMING INCollingwood (6th, 6-3) was in second spot before back-to-back defeats to Richmond and then the Casey Demons by 23 points two weeks ago. The Blues (14th, 1-8) suff ered a fift h straight loss in falling to the Tigers by 38 points last week.
KEY QUESTIONWhat scars remain for Northern from Round 1? The Blues endured a miserable start to the season in conceding 31 goals to the Magpies, including 16 shared between mobile forwards Jamie Elliott, Jordan De Goey, Gus Borthwick and Alex Fasolo. Collingwood’s VFL front half has a diff erent look now, but Northern defenders would still be nervous.
KEY STATClearances per game is one of the rare statistical categories the Blues are even close to the Magpies in, ranking seventh in the VFL compared to the sixth-ranked Collingwood. Northern needs to win its fair share of contests too, because once the ball is on the outside the Magpies average 74 more uncontested possessions per outing.

News
Sandy all at seaSandringham’s 68-point loss to Williamstown in one of the Peter Jackson VFL’s wettest and windiest games of recent times had statisticians rushing to the record books.
The Zebras managed just nine behinds in extremely
diff icult conditions at Williamstown Football
Ground, which was the club’s lowest-ever score and
the only goalless performance in its 89-year history.
In fact, it was the first goalless VFL/VFA performance
since Northcote kicked only four behinds against
North Melbourne at Arden Street in Round 15, 1919
and the lowest VFL/VFA score since 1961.

Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s preview – Round 7It’s all about pride in Round 7 of Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s as Melbourne Uni and the Darebin Falcons travel to Hamilton for the second inaugural Pride Game, while the remaining teams battle it out in and around Melbourne.
By Meg Saultry
V
MELBOURNE UNI vs DAREBIN FALCONS – Saturday 6.30pm @ Melville Oval, Hamilton
FORM COMING IN
Melbourne Uni (12th, 1-4) suff ered its third loss in succession, falling to Richmond by 29 points in their recent trip to Bendigo. Darebin’s (5th, 3-2) three-game winning streak was broken in Round 6, with the Falcons losing to the Geelong Cats by 15 points.
KEY QUESTION
Can Melbourne Uni find more meaningful possession? The Mugars are one of the highest-possession teams in the competition but have found it hard to convert their eff orts into scores, ranking last in the competition for disposals-per-goal ratio. In comparison, Darebin takes an average of 40 fewer disposals to convert a major.
KEY STAT
Melbourne Uni skipper and recent North Melbourne AFL Women’s signing Ash Riddell had one of her best showings against Richmond in Round 6, with the midfielder gathering 23 disposals and an equal-round-high 13 tackles.
COACH’S PERSPECTIVE
Melbourne Uni senior coach Scott Gowans on the community support around the second inaugural Pride Game in Hamilton:
“It’s a privilege to be a part of the event. It’s probably more than an event – it shines a light on inclusion and gives a sense of belonging to everyone. The game of AFL football is for everyone: Any player, coach, off icial, volunteer or supporter that comes to a football match anywhere – including Hamilton – should feel a sense of belonging and can come and enjoy the game. There are only a dozen of these pride games across the state, so it’s a huge privilege for both ourselves and Darebin to be involved.”
On the impact of several North Melbourne AFLW signings joining the VFLW list:
“These players will come in and out of the team throughout the season and they will play a block of games here and there to get them in the best condition come our first training session in
November. The classic example is Jasmine Grierson, who has only been at training for about a week and is already taking girls aside that she doesn’t know that well and helping with their learning in regards to structures and elite standards. On the other side, Emma Kearney – the best player in the country – took players aside the other week for kicking training. Things like that are really valuable.”
On what strengths Melbourne Uni will draw on against the Falcons:
“Darebin is obviously an amazingly talented side and keeps getting stronger each week, but the big thing for us that we talk about is taking on the game. We don’t want to be the side that chips the ball around – we want to get the game going our way. What you’ll probably find is our strength will be to move the ball quickly, and sometimes we turn the ball over, but we’ll always keep pushing.”
Ash Riddell has been in good form for Melbourne Uni this season

SOUTHERN SAINTS vs NT THUNDER – Saturday 11.15am @ Skybus Stadium
FORM COMING IN
A three-game winning streak was broken for the
Saints (6th, 3-2) with a 33-point loss to Hawthorn
last week. The Thunder (2nd, 5-0) remain
undefeated following another comfortable win
by 36 points against Carlton in Round 6.
KEY QUESTION
Can the Saints compete defensively against
the Thunder? The Saints struggled to hold
Hawthorn defensively for four quarters last week,
the Hawks eventually breaking through in the
final term with eight scoring shots to none. NT
leads the competition for forward-50 entries, so
the Saints defenders will need to be ready to lock
down on their opponents.
KEY STAT
Adelaide 2017 AFL Women’s premiership player
Courtney Cramey made her debut for the
Thunder in their win against the Blues last week
and finished the game with 16 disposals, nine
tackles and a goal in the third quarter.
V
COLLINGWOOD vs CARLTON – Saturday 1pm @ Warrawee Park
[LIVE on WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]
FORM COMING IN
Collingwood (3rd, 4-0-1) has had a week’s rest aft er
beating the previously-undefeated Hawthorn by
seven points in Round 5. Carlton (8th, 2-4) has lost
its last four games – all against current top-five teams
Hawthorn, the Geelong Cats, Darebin Falcons and
then NT Thunder last week.
KEY QUESTION
What position will Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy
play this season? Molloy spent the majority of the
2018 AFL Women’s season dominating in defence,
but with the loss of several key forwards from the
Magpies list, Molloy may revert back to the forward
line – where she jointly won the 2017 VFLW leading
goalkicker title alongside the Western Bulldogs’ Katie
Brennan (then at Darebin).
KEY STAT
The Blues have conceded 143 points in the last four
rounds while only scoring 95 points of their own.
Though their closest losing margin in that time was
seven points against Geelong in Round 4, they are
being defeated by 35 points on average.
V
CASEY DEMONS vs WESTERN BULLDOGS – Saturday 4pm @ Casey Fields[vfl.com.au LIVE STREAM]
FORM COMING IN
The Demons (10th, 1-3) have had a disrupted start to the season with two byes so far, but they recorded
their first win against Williamstown in Round 5. The Bulldogs (9th, 1-4) celebrated their own first victory of
2018 in beating the Seagulls by 56 points last week.
KEY QUESTION
Can Casey find its form moving forward? The Demons have played four games over seven weeks but will
have an uninterrupted run of games over the rest of the home-and-away season. They won their first game
in Round 5 with Kaila Bentvelzen kicking five goals from 12 disposals, so there is plenty to look forward to.
KEY STAT
The Bulldogs almost kicked more majors in their Round 6 win (12 goals) than in their four previous games
combined (13). Jessica Francke and Alyssa Mifsud teamed up to kick five and three respectively, providing
their team with some much-needed firepower up forward.

HAWTHORN vs ESSENDON – Sunday 11.45am @ Box Hill City Oval[LIVE on WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]
LAST ENCOUNTER
2018 Rd 1 @ Windy Hill: Hawthorn 8.12 (60) d Essendon 3.3 (21)
FORM COMING IN
Hawthorn (4th, 4-1) returned to the winners’ list with last week’s 33-point victory over the Southern Saints
aft er suff ering its first loss in Round 5, to Collingwood. Essendon (13th, 0-5) has yet to notch the club’s first
VFLW win, most recently losing to Richmond by 34 points before a bye last week.
KEY QUESTION
Can the Bombers improve in their second game against the Hawks? Essendon failed to beat Hawthorn
in most key statistics in its 39-point loss in Round 1. The Hawks had 58 more disposals, 30 more marks and
24 more inside-50s that day, though the Bombers did match the Hawks in hitouts with 35 apiece.
KEY STAT
Essendon averages the fewest contested marks per game in the competition, while Hawthorn ranks third in
that category. Tamara Luke is the best contested-marker for the Hawks, followed by Sarah Perkins.
V
