West Africa is a very diverse region. It has desert landscapes and also the tropical rain forests of the more humid south.

HISTORYDating from 4500 years ago, ancient Egypt is the oldest and most dynamic of all early kingdoms known to have flourished on the continent of Africa. Egypt’s early strength was the Nile River, the longest river in the whole world. It runs from two little rivers–the White Nile, which runs from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile in the Nubian Mountains.

TRADE KINGDOMS

Trade routes developed across Africa in several places. Early African people lived in small family groups. Parents, children and grandparents formed clans with other families. Larger clans became tribes.

ECONOMYThe economy of Africa

54 different countries.

The majority of Africans are adherents of the Abrahamic religions: Islam and Christianity. Both religions are widespread throughout Africa. These religions are often adapted to African cultural contexts and indigenous belief systems. It was estimated in 2000 that Christians form 40.6% of Africa's population, and Muslims forming 45%

The Republic of South Africa is a constitutional democracy with a three-tier system of government and an independent judiciary, operating in a nearly unique system that combines aspects of parliamentary and presidential systems.

houses and classrooms around

the globe. We are beginning to

learn through the works of

scholars, film makers, and

writers that Africans can teach

us much more than we can

show them.
