Tinga Tinga Art

Tinga Tinga art is an art movement that began in Tanzania and spread to most of east Africa.

The paintings are bright and colourful and usually show the elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion or leopard.

They are designed to appeal to European and American tourists.

Edward Tingatingabegan the art movement in 1968 but died 4 years later. His style of work is now copied across Eastern Africa.

He became one of the most famous artists in Africa.

Tinga Tinga Tales A whole series of children’s TV programs was

based upon the paintings by Edward

Tingatinga.

They told stories of different African animals and

used the bright colours and bold patterns that

Edward Tingatinga had used in his original

artwork.
