July 2002 in Dakar, on the initiative of

the group of basins of West Africa and

Lake Chad

with the support of:

GWPO (Global Water Partnership for West Africa) and

INBO (International Network of Basin Organisations)

Mission

ANBO main mission is to :

bridge the many gaps observed in communication, exchange ofexperience, expertise and know-how between its members in thefield of IWRM

address lack of coordination

strengthen cooperation between managers of African lake, riverand aquifer basin organizations

Bring these organizations together in a single representativeinstitution

Support the African Basin Organizations

ANBO Vision

The ANBO vision is to

1. Contribute tangibly to Africa Water Vision for the Welfare of african people by 2025

2. Create opportunities for L/RBOs to takethe lead in conflict resolution, peace et developpement for its members

Objectives

develop cooperation between the African organisations in charge of transboundary water management (Surface and Ground Waters)

favour exchange of experiences and expertise among them;

support peaceful and sustainable management and development of transboundary water resources on the African continent;

strengthen and network with partners for transboundary water issues

Project Objective/Components

Overall Objective: Strengthen coordination/collaboration capacity of

African Lake and River Basin Organizations (L/RBOs),

Commissions/cooperative frameworks for transboundary groundwater

management and their Member States for improved transboundary water

governance in Africa through the improved support by the African Network

of Basin Organization (ANBO)

The project has two components. Component 1: Strengthening ANBO’s

institutional and technical capacity as a technical arm of AMCOW, and

Component 2: Supporting the capacity building of L/RBOs, Groundwater

Commissions and RECs to foster transboundary cooperation.
